Guitar Anthems at Sporting Events

This happened the other night before a game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Anaheim Ducks.  The guy was introduced as a comedian and musician, and I'm not really sure which of those he's trying to channel here.

My opinion is there was a time and place for a guitar anthem and it was 8/16/69.

What say you, thumbs up or thumbs down?

Huge thumbs up for Dave!

You either get him…or I’m sorry.  He’s a gifted comedian, musician, writer and artist, and if you took that seriously, you don’t know what he’s all about.

I’m a fan.

I also love his Valley Lodge stuff - great band!

As far as the Hendrix performance at Woodstock, that was about as pro-American as “Born in the USA”, “Fortunate Son”, “American Woman”, “Rockin’ in the Free World”, or even more humorous to me, because tens of millions of American school children had to sing it in elementary school from the ‘60s to the ‘90s, “This Land Is Your Land”.   It’s always cracked me up to see any bastardization of the Hendrix version done at sporting events, because it was originally performed to be a huge middle finger to the American flag.

Dave Hill is hilarious.  I am also a fan.

This is why I no longer own any floyded guitars or a wha.

Canada’s anthem has such a beautiful melody, my favorite national song by far. It didn’t deserve Hill’s aural buggery.

That's why it worked.  Doing it at events where it's meant to be ceremonial is silly.

I like this version better.

Remember what happened when a black man kneeled in 2016?  Jimi was a black man in 1969.

Machine gun
Tearing my body all apart

Hey machine gun
Tearing my, tearing my body all apart

Evil man make me kill ya
Evil man make you kill me
Evil man make us kill-
Evil man, evil man make you kill me
Even though we're only families apart

Oh, yeah. I remember. He delegated himself to the, “do not sign”, list. Because he’s not a great QB, not the kneeling BS.

Not sure if you're being sarcastic or not but Colin Kaepernick was a very good quarterback and was a huge contribution to the 49ers winning seasonS...

2× WAC Offensive Player of the Year, NFL records, most rushing yards by a quarterback in a game and a postseason

2x NFC Championships with a Superbowl appearance only to lose to the Ravens

I'm thinking history is going to repeat itself with a different outcome...

But I digress~

Huh? Dang! Somebody who knows less about sportball than I do must have hacked my account and posted something stupid and uninformed.

Shocking. I'm shocked! Look at me: this is my shocked face...Nothing to see here, people. Carry on.

Dick Cavet show:

“I don’t know, man,” Hendrix said on his decision to play the track before adding, “I’m an American, so I played it. They made me sing it in school, so it was a flashback.” Cavett then points out that Hendrix is likely to find himself on the receiving end of a barrage of hate mail because of his decision to cover the national anthem in an unorthodox manner, to which Hendrix proudly stated, “It’s not unorthodox, I thought it was beautiful.”

Unless one believes the backlash Kap experienced when protesting how blacks are treated in 2016 America had something to do with race.  Imagine the backlash Hendrix might have experienced in 1960s America.  For the record, he did have lots to say about the anthem on smaller stages, that he didn't share on the national stage speaking to Cavett.
