zorrow Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I never dare to say Brad Gillis is one of my influences because I barely know anything from Night Ranger (never got into that stuff), but the first rock solo I tried to play entirely was his in "Don't tell me you love me". But most importantly, the first instructional video I went through and got my rock chops from zero to guitar hero (well, kind of... ) was Brad Gillis' Star Licks Video -- I still have the original VHS tape at home. What was yours? ------------------------------------------------------ PS: Thinking about it, I've played a zillion times Ozzy's "Speak of the Devil" album and the Brazilian DVD of the same title (with a totally different setlist), just because I get inspired when I listen to Gillis playing with Ozzy. I also own Gillis' "Gilrock Ranch" solo album (original press ) and I spin it quite often... so I guess yes, Brad Gillis is definitively one of my influences...
MCChris Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Star Licks "In the Style of Van Halen" got me into developing my own style, because a mere five minutes with the "Push Comes to Shove" solo convinced me that I would never be able to play like that (maybe I'd get the notes down after weeks of woodshedding, but never the phrasing and other nuances).
Jeff R Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Steve Lukather, Star Licks series, 1985. Still have it on VHS and still put it on probably once a month. And the dude 24 years later still scares the living shit out of me on a guitar.
pesocaster Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Arlen Roth slide video... openend my mind to alternate tunings... and most importantly dropped D
Arjay Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Not instructional, but "The Song Remains The Same" concert tape by Led Zeppelin was a great influence
Feynman Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 William Kanengiser: Effortless Classical Guitar (effortless, my ass)Brian Setzer's Hot Licks thingThose were my first two for each style of guitar, and they both left me in awestruck inspirational mode.
ScubaMarket Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I think it was 80's Rick Emmets learn to play rock guitar. Inspirational video's........ The days with Bon were RAW and the best of this band in my humble opinion. I love this music..... Of course I like Mr Johnny Cash as well. He's MY Elvis I learned this song with and old Tiasco guitar around 1980 .......
Hamer of the gods Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 Robin Trower: Classic Blues & Rock Guitar andRonnie Earl: Blues Guitar with Soul
Ethan Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I bought George Lynch's REH video from around when Lynch Mob started when I was in high school, I learned a few licks from it but was pissed that he didn't really explain things a whole lot or go into any detail about how to play anything...only coming to find out later that the video was supposed to come with a tab booklet that I later received. Having said that, those are still primary frustrations that I have with instructional videos. I just picked up Danny Gatton's Telemaster dvd, but I found that I like this thing he did before that better, now apparently out of print, but you can watch on youtube.
velorush Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 NATIONAL LAMPOON'S 'ANIMAL HOUSE' "I gave my love a cherry..." You can definitely get the Pete Townsend neck-grip smashing technique down. I have tried a few vids and I just can't seem to learn that way. Probably ADD relat... what were we typing about? Oh yeah, I bought the Intellishred book a month or so back after it came up here and that seems to be doing some good, well, when I have the time to sit down with it. An amazing piece of work.
hardheartedbill Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I've seen 2, Joes theory tape and Danny Gattons, one was better
HamerHokie Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I've seen 2, Joes theory tape and Danny Gattons, one was betterI would pay a lot to see the former.
shredmeister Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Chris Impellitteri Speed LicksAfter that Reb Beach, Michael Angelo and Brett Garsed. These are about all I have.
Siaip Ciuvas Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 so far ALL instructional videos used to PUT ME OFF Never found even a single one which would be eye opener or gave me something solid. Printed material is totally different story, especially Guitar Techniques magazines.
Bruiser Brody Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 Jegg, I have that Lukather vid on DVD!! It's in PAL format tho..gotta watch it on a friggen computer unless yer player'll support it. It's funny! "Hey I gotta stay up-to-date with my gear. It IS the eighties man..". ha Yeah, he rips it up on that'un. I dig Lukather's attitude in general too.
savethematches Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 I had a Ted Nugent one that included footage of him shooting a keyboard and later some bowling pins. It wasn't very instructional, but it was highly entertaining.
zorrow Posted March 4, 2009 Author Posted March 4, 2009 so far ALL instructional videos used to PUT ME OFF Never found even a single one which would be eye opener or gave me something solid. Printed material is totally different story, especially Guitar Techniques magazines. Yes, "Guitar Techniques" ought to be the best guitar playing magazine out there. Shawn Baxter (well, no matter how his name is spelled) always comes with some interesting stuff, and there is always some cool features about rock, metal licks, electric blues, shred, fingerpicking blues, hybrid picking, rhythm chops or anything... Everything is totally first-class, killer material in there. However, I'm too lazy to go patiently through all the lessons. That's why I prefer DVD's -- because to me they are more... entertaining. For example, I recently got the two new George Lynch DVD's, respectively titled "Wicked Riffs" and "Scary Licks". Are they any good? NOT AT ALL! Actually, to me they are just some quick cash for George Lynch and that's about it -- if there's more than one half an hour of useful material in them, it'd be already too much... HOWEVER, because it's entertaining to me, I went through both and played all what I could. I got a serious boost to my chops thanks to that... and at the same time I had some fun.
