Jimbilly Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 I've had good luck with dryer sheets in the past, now I've got a foam lined SKB that seems to have a neverending supply of cigarette smoke smell. I've left it outside, in and out of the sun, with dryer sheets, I open it up and it's still strong. Any more ideas?, a little talcum powder maybe?
BubbaVO Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Take a dump in the case. You won't notice the smell of smoke.
Thundernotes Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 I got some of this stuff called Nok-Out that works on everything from smoke to cat whiz. http://nokout.com/store/product.php?produc...=258&page=1

Jimbilly Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 Oh, I think my wife's got some Fabreeze upstairs, I'll try some of that too. My friend has an '80s RoadstarII bass case that smells like someone vominted in it 20 years ago, -that masks any smoke smell very well too. I could just leave one of my toddler daughters diapers in there for a few minutes, that would do the trick!
landon w Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Ill tell you a trick that when you do it, not only gets out the smell of smoke, but leaves a good fragrance behind.have you ever noticed the smell of Ibanez cases and SKB cases when they are brand new........Oh GOD I love that smell, nothing like it........except, carmax lip balm....no kidding, smells JUST like it.Take a couple of these little jars, you know the tiny little whit lip balm jars with the white top?Put them in your case, close it up and let it sit where it can get nice and hot so it te smell of this balm will permiate (sp) the inside.Good stuff. Im so addicted to this smell inside my cases that ive done this to brand new cases that didnt stink, they just didnt have that smell........LOVE ITcall me kooky
Jimbilly Posted July 20, 2009 Author Posted July 20, 2009 Is it Carmex?, I remeber those having yellow lids, it must be a different brand then?
landon w Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 Is it Carmex?, I remeber those having yellow lids, it must be a different brand then? yeah....theres a big difference between carmAX and carmEX. dont know what i type have the time, and I dont go back a check it the rest of the time .............and yes they do have yellow lids, i usually ave quite a few typos in my posts, im sure you'll get used to it
velorush Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 I got an eBay guitar in a big heavily padded gig bag that wreaked of smoke. I was going to throw it away after trying everything. I decided I'd stick it up in the attic. I checked it out after letting it hang open for about a year - the thing didn't smell like smoke at all (and still doesn't). Of course, with a hard case it could be the heat separates the tolex from the wood base, but it would be worth a try before throwing it out.
bruce919 Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 I had from a Duotone a few years back. I fabreezed the hell out of, left it sit open in my garage for a few weeks & then packed it full of dryer sheets - closed for a few months. It got rid of most of it. Also wipe down the out side of the case well. My 2 cents.
Thundersteel Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 I have an old Peavey amp that smells like it was inside a wet barn for a decade or so. It has a deep musty smell to it. It's currently in the garage, as it literally stinks up the house!I scrubbed the Tolex with Pine-Sol; the odor is still there. I removed the Tolex, sanded and varnished the wood; the odor is still there. I replaced the speakers and cleaned all the electronics; the odor is STILL there. I give up--maybe it's possessed!
karmma1 Posted July 21, 2009 Posted July 21, 2009 The only way to get really rid of (as opposed to masking) the smoke smell is to get rid of the smoke leftovers.Carefully without saturating the case, wash it several times with a solution of water, baking soda, and vinegar. This solution works great for dissolving the sticky and tenacious nicotine/smoke residue (you'll see it on the paper towels as you wipe it dry after each washing). Repeat until the towels are not showing any more yellow-green funk. You may be able to use this solution on the inside of the case also, depending on the material...try a small inconspicuous spot first. It will be necessary to thoroughly rinse out the solution with water, however. If you cant wash it, sprinkle baking soda liberally inside the case, let it sit for a week or so, then vacuum it out. Hopefully the case wasn't left open for months in the presence of smoke, and the interior wont be so bad. Good luck.

The only thing I did differently was place it in the sun for a day to dissipate the Ozium smell. Worked like a champ.
Jimbilly Posted July 23, 2009 Author Posted July 23, 2009 After Febreeze, drying out, Febreeze and drying again, I left it shut for a day or two, it smells like Febreeze and not so much like smoke. My search is over, -thanks for all the suggestions.
