  1. LOL- All yours, Steve. I'm a reverse head stock and boomers-only type. That and with a few exceptions, I'm not much of a maple neck/board person. However, my guess is that FGJ isn't going to be giving that up any time soon.
  2. Are you directing that to me? If so, the most inexpensive one is probably my most recent acquisition- the PopsiCali- named for the frozen, popsicle-like state it arrived in, last Tuesday, amidst the Polar Vortex. It's an '89 Cali LE very similar to the purple one pictured in the photo. With shipping it ran me $1600.00.
  3. Damn. Blew my wad on the Jackson and the Cali LE. Ahh well, it's a 24.75 " scale and 22 frets.. I woulda flipped it anyway.
  4. DO IT! DO IT NOW! Just make sure it has a Floyd, dammit.
  5. This /\. Add coolfeel to that list. The man did me a solid that goes above and beyond. Story to follow. And a darned nice person to chat with as well. So, to Brentrocks, coolfeel and the HFC, I raise my glass.
  6. As an unabashed fan of green guitars, i will say.... ewww. No thanks. Maybe with a green burst going to black or a nice pronounced flame maple along with some black hardware, (Including an OFR, naturally) and without the peace shit. Maybe then I'd consider it.
  7. FGJ- It's just time, money and opportunity, my friend. Any "difficulty" encountered is in being vigilant and patient enough to catch these when they do appear. It's also a no-brainer that being part of the HFC helps considerably, as 5 of those 6 Cali's came from members hereon. The custom checked Cali was ordered thru, and with the help of a long-standing member (bcrgreg) and a lot of the mods on the others were effected by uber-talented folks on the board- bcrgreg, Murkat, and Stike. On the issue of modding- I had someone "call me" on the actual meaning of modding. In his opinion, modding entailed making significant changes to the form or function of the guitar to the extent that it would be difficult or impossible to reverse the changes. I think there are degrees of modding but that's probably just semantics In the end, value is how YOU define it. If a guitar is more valuable in a state/condition that is best suited to your playing style or aesthetic preferences, (as opposed to monetary value from an investment standpoint) then that becomes your defining standard. Modding a guitar to play/sound/look better according to your desires will enhance the value to you. In the end, as a guitar player, I find that to be more valuable than it's resale or "original" status.
  8. Hmm. This is gonna come back to bite me in the ass saying this but: nothing that I can think of at this time. Seriously. Consider: I just acquired the Vector and am getting that Murkat/Stike-ed , just purchased the Bengal Dinky DK1, am poised to purchase another Cali LE and I have a custom ordered Jackson Star due in March. I suppose if that doesn't keep my GAS sated, there's always the PRS CU24 with Floyd to consider.
  9. I treated myself to the bengal Jackson DK1, completed most the mods on the LP and am preparing to box up the Vector for some Murkat and Stike magic. That's a merry f-ing X-mas if I ever had one!
  10. DBraz- I am interested in hearing more about your RAN. A few years ago, whilst struck with a particularly virulent case of GAS for a custom spec-ed guitar that no big name builder would touch (because of legalities over the headstock shape) I was apprised of RAN and liked what I saw, heard. Ultimately, I abandoned that quest but would consider them again having heard your praise of the neck.
  11. I have to admit liking both bolt ons, set and neck thrus. Got 'em all but it's hard to make comparisons because they're all on different types of guitars- set and bolt-on Cali's, neck thru Gibson, bolt on Charvel, set neck (presumably) Vector, and soon, a Jackson neck thru Star. Despite different neck carves as well as radii, frets sizes and neck finishes, they all are keepers.
  12. While I certainly concur that Vai, Satch, Gilbert et al helped to usher in the shred era and had a profound effect on me in that regard, I don't give Ibanez much credit for being at the forefront of the shred movement's beginnings. To me, it started with Jackson and Charvel. Brands like Performance and Kramer also factored in heavily. I think Ibanez finally arrived on my radar when Vai broke out his very first Jem. While I was aware of Ibanez previous to that moment, they just didn't really equate with shred quite like Jackson and the rest. Funny thing is, Hamer suffered from a lack of visibility with high-profile (or high volumes of, as in the case of Jackson and Ibanez) endorsers and I don't equate them with the formative years of my shred consciousness. Now, I couldn't imagine being happy with anything other than my Cali's (and my CS Charvel Star )
  13. Yes. Floyds are your friend. Even if you don't love them, they love you all the same. I can say this having just spent a the last 25 minutes having WAY too much fun for that time on a Monday morning, with the Floyd on my CS Charvel Star. The OFR on that is essentially set up and performance perfection incarnate. No shit.
  14. Who pinned this up? 2 and a half years later my perspective remains essentially unchanged with one small caveat: aesthetics aside, the Cali is, IMO, the better ergonomically designed shredder of the two. All other things being equal, the Cali has slightly better higher fret access (and more frets) and the volume knob placement is superior for my playing style. Decision: Cali.
  15. If you're ballsy enough to just say "F- it!" and mod the Holy Grail Cali, then you're okay in my book. I know a little about modding Cali's. Welcome! I agree, the aesthetics of the maple board with the seafoam body are striking! Sweet looking ax. 4 of the 6 Cali's in the pic are modded moderately (different p'ups, big brass block) to extensively (new paint, SS frets, p'ups, Floyd, block, switches).
  16. Where the hell was this pic when I was pacing expectantly in agonizing anticipation back in early '13??? The Hamer crew has my undying gratitude for creating the work of art that is depicted above. If I was to have children, I'd name them after you guys. As it is, I gave birth to a sizable turd a half hour ago. I will name it after you guys. Now that's love.
  17. +1 I've got two Gibbys and that's all I EVER see me needing/wanting. Seriously.
  18. I dunno mates, I rather fancy me a neck like that. And yes, the colour is brilliant. But an unfinished neck looks and likely, feels fab IMO.
  19. Damn Cool, you had take it there? Had to keep it metaphorical. It's all fun and games until some gets an eye poked out.
  20. I got yer Uncle Dick right here, cwgatti
  21. cwgatti- sorry for the derail. Hope the sale overseas goes well. Paypal will cover your ass to a degree and if it's any consolation, I've had numerous successful sales overseas. Cool- yer killin' me.
  22. You know, Diablo, he has a point. Why not reach into those deep cali coffers of yours and bring home another cousin? Now come on, Cool, you know my Cali love extends to the fully Boomer-ed and reverse head stocked. This one doesn't need a cousin:
  23. Does this mean we should expect a reduction in bumps for your guitar?
  24. And some people just suck. Hope our friend gets his guits back! This /\
