Stupid But I have to ask about strings
Brooks replied to billhart22's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
+1. d'addarios mostly, but if we're recording or doing something special i'll get DR's. -
saw iron maiden monday, they now have 3 gee-tar players. ha!
-
funny nobody mentioned grand funk in their list. they came out at the same time as zeppelin, influenced heavy rock, and sold a bunch of records. i'd put zz top, van halen, & grand funk as my fave classic usa bands. edit: & CCR !!!!

Brooks replied to nosajwp's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard

yeah, guys like eric johnson, jeff beck, and SRV were trying to get that elusive ratt/crue "tone" all the wrong way; they needed a bunch of rack gear and floyded guitars, not stompboxes/tube amps/vintage guitars. what a bunch of idiots! ha. -
we took monte montgomery's 30 second version of "stairway to freebird" and expanded it into a whole tune; "all along the stairway to freebird". people get confused when they hear the lyrics from one tune sung over the chords of another tune, ha.
-
always a problem. we used to be pretty militant about no uninvited guests onstage in my old coverband, only ex-members. same w/ requests; i always like to use the old "bruce springsteen (or insert requested artist here) will be here next week, thank you". however, when dave & I play duo gigs, money talks. we will let anyone on the mic (or request a song) for $20, we then fake the tune for ~30 seconds then stop, announce "lets hear it for drunk guy" and launch into another tune while breaking eye contact, ha. we made $176 in tips a few weeks ago when these 4 drunk folks kept asking us to do songs we really didn't know (and a few we did know). best tip was $50 if we let one drunk get on the mic and do his "LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!!" imitation. dude then tried to dance on a table, spilling himself and everything on the table to the floor, ha!

i like phat cats better than jb/59. for acoustic gigs, i use elixer super light acoustic strings (.11 high E, and wound 3rd).
-
guilty. i don't like the jb/59 combo that comes w/ a lot of hamers. i fell into the combo of dimarzio tonezone bridge / hum from hell neck back when i had my les paul, tried it on my slammer series and 25th anniv w/ success. used a duncan jazz neck before trying the HFH, had the tonezone/jazz combo in a few gibsons before i came to hamers. now i'm way into the sound of phatcats in my duotone. trying to decide on more phatcats or trying a rio/HFH combo in my other duotone.

our thoughts are with you, broseph.

+1 on raging slab, great band but their albums are hit & miss (kinda like some other bands i should add to this list, like kings x, wino, c.o.c., or fishbone).
-
i remeber lord tracy! i thought they'd be big when they came out. terry was the original singer for pantera back in their spandex/cover tune days. barney was an amazing shredding bassist (ala billy sheenan), he used to play for lightning (big 70's/early 80's texas band), went on tour w/ the cult after lord tracy split.
-
+1 on the bee gees and disco, at least for dancing (i dj our company partys; drunk girls + disco = party!). i also like some rap that was popular when i was in college, like public enemy, ice cube, ez e. for some reason i really love sublime, even though they are outside of my typical hard rawk or neo-jazz tastes.
-
yeah, ozric tentacles has some cool stuff. other cool instrumental stuff under the radar: will bernard tj kirk dave fuiczynski cool hard rawk stuff under the radar: riot mindfunk burden brothers

Where to rock stars get their clothes?
Brooks replied to Abaco's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
nice shirt, chris. do they make those for men, too? -
"thats a bold statement" - vincent vega. that suhr was killer. can't wait to check this daytona out.

i know jeff e. terwilliger (JET) from raleigh nc, he used to do work on my stuff before i moved to g'boro (& started mooching work off stike). he made me a doubleneck i designed w/ some short scale bolt on necks i had. he does nice work. but, i gotta agree w/ HHB about the over the top eye candy factor, thats a turn off i get from lotsa high end builders.

my take on shred type players is that they're alot of fun to watch live. i love watching someone who has mastered their instrument, even if they go over the top (like yngwie). but, most of the shred stuff i've heard doesn't stand up to repeated listening, at least to me. its the same w/ bluegrass; i'll enjoy watching a live set of quality BG music, yet the cd's bore me as much as shred. that said, i do have a few scott henderson/andy timmons/kotzen & howe/holdsworth tunes in rotation on my 200 cd player. i used to love vai & satch in the 80's, but i never replaced their albums w/ cd's (kinda like judas priest and iron maiden). i like scofields stuff from the last 10 years. he's got chops, but he doesn't overdo it. its his jazzy phrasing that hooks me, along w/ the funky grooves. charlie hunter and will bernard, too. i like good players, esp for instrumental music. but alot of my fave rock music (sabs, zep, CCR, etc) is kinda lame compared to jazz and shred stuff, at least chops wise. but i'm feelin' it.

i vote for chorus as the most useless effect.

bill, you've made some major progress today, we're very proud of you

yep. because of that, the only time i DIDN'T use an OD pedal was when i was in a coverband w/ a fulltime soundman. otherwise, a boost pedal (in my case, a comp) wouldn't boost the volume of a gainy amp channel, it just compresses it more. without a soundman, i NEED a volume boost for solos that i can control. for most rawk band gigs, i've always run a OD pedal THEN a comp into a CLEAN tube amp; this way the comp gives as big of a boost as i set it to, clean or dirty. recording is different, tho.
