The thread on the Lita Ford Greco reminded me how much I missed having my old black B&C Greco that I sold several years back.

https://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/topic/104067-greco-lita-esque-standard-pricey/

The asking prices have skyrocketed since then, so I didn't think it was likely that I would acquire another anytime soon. Then, to my surprise, one popped up for sale in Japan with a very reasonable BIN price. It looked to be in good shape, so I pulled the trigger hoping that the pics and description didn't lie.

It was delivered yesterday. It is super clean, especially for a 47 year old guitar. Only a few very minor surface scratches that are barely noticeable. None of the typical chipping around the sharp corners I see on these, all of the finish is intact. With the exception of some added black speed knobs (which have already been replaced), it's completely original with the serial number and uncovered zebra Maxon U-1000 pickups dating to June/July 1978. The fretboard was a little dry, so I conditioned it with some lemon oil which darkened it up nicely. The original frets are also in great shape. Even the case is clean with no mildew smell (common with cases coming from Japan).

Comparing it the the other 78 that is for sale on Reverb in the Lita thread above, it's interesting that there are a couple of differences. That one is from March 1978, but has a 3 screw truss rod cover and Maxon U-1000 pickups that have a covers that outline the bobbins, but leave them exposed. Neither is a major difference, I just find it interesting what can change over the period of 4 months in production.

It's not a Hamer, and I would never say it's a direct replacement for one. But given that a similar 4 digit would probably be 4-5x the cost, and even a more modern version from the 90s or 00s would be at least 3x, this will do. It is definitely a great playing and sounding guitar in its own right.

Congrats man!!! Nice score. I was hemming and hawwing as whether to grab that one or one like it...

... just because if yer gonna snag a hard tail, that body shape and those specs are hard to beat IMO.
