hamerhead Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 (edited) It's a cryin' shame. ETA: 'Cryin' Shame' is one of very few country tunes I genuinely enjoy. Had I not done a stint in a country band, I likely would never have heard of it or the Mavericks. R.I.P., Mr. Malo. Edited December 12, 2025 by hamerhead 2 Quote
Hackubus Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 I hate to hear that. Bummed I didn't get to see them live. Their album In Time gets a lot of play from me after all these years. 2 Quote
cmatthes Posted December 10, 2025 Posted December 10, 2025 They were a solid live act - saw them again last year with our neighbors who are big fans. Raul was definitely the focal point of the band - talented guy, and left too young. 3 Quote
shankyboy Posted December 11, 2025 Posted December 11, 2025 Had the pleasure of seeing the Mavericks at the ACL Moody Theater a couple of years ago. They totally burned the house down. Not only was he a great singer, he had some pretty serious chops on the guitar. RIP Raul. 4 Quote
LucSulla Posted December 12, 2025 Posted December 12, 2025 Ah, man, that sucks! One of my best buddies was his tour manager and FOH engineer for a spell. I remember him telling me, "If you like tequila, sushi, and fine looking women, Raul is a lot of fun to work for." The Mavericks were one of the first "country" bands to make me think maybe country wasn't so bad. 3 1 Quote
crunchee Posted December 15, 2025 Author Posted December 15, 2025 I hadn't seen the Conan O'Brien Late Night video before I originally posted it. Two takeaways: -'All You Ever Do Is Bring Me Down' has that hard-driving 'freight train' feel to it...Buck Owens coulda sung and put out that song easily. -I'm not sure who the band member is playing the LP Custom, but he's proving that you can back a 'country' song with a LP without falling into Blues/Rawk cliches. hamerican gigolo Posted December 16, 2025 Posted December 16, 2025 RM was a very fine vocalist. Love the Mavericks. They were far too good & eclectic for'90s Nashville. The Nashville Acoustic Sessions CD is just truly sublime. R.I.P. 😢 1 Quote
