veatch Posted February 17 Posted February 17 Have used Gorgomyte for years. Pretty sparingly, one pack has lasted me quite a number of years. Getting down to my last couple of 2 inch squares, so I was going to order another pack. I'm guessing they're out of business because I can't really find them anywhere. Stew Mac has a "Miracle Cleaning Cloth." Has anyone tried that? Is it the same or similar? What else are you using for your fretboards? Quote
Menehune Posted February 17 Posted February 17 https://reverb.com/marketplace?query=Gorgomyte Quote Gorgomyte cleaning cloths contain a proprietary blend of chemicals designed to clean, condition, and polish guitar fretboards and frets. Based on the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) referenced in the search context, the key chemical constituents are: Wax (CAS# 8002-74-2): Provides a protective coating and contributes to the cloth’s waxy texture. Pure Essential Lemon Oil (CAS# 8042-47-5): Adds fragrance and helps condition the wood. Aqua Ammonia Solution 26BE (CAS# 7664-41-7): A cleaning agent containing 12–44% ammonia, effective at breaking down grime and oxidation. Pumice (CAS# 1332-09-8): A mild abrasive that helps remove dirt, tarnish, and oxidation without damaging the frets or fretboard. Mineral Oil (CAS# 8042-47-5): Acts as a conditioning agent to nourish and protect the wood. Cloth: Made from all-cotton, unbleached, soft filled sheeting (275–305 weight), which serves as the carrier for the chemical mixture. The original formula used lemon oil, but some current versions (such as those sold by GHS or available on the Gorgomyte website) have transitioned to coconut oil as the conditioning agent, which may affect the scent and feel. The combination of mild abrasion (pumice), cleaning power (ammonia), and conditioning (oil and wax) makes Gorgomyte effective for both fretboard cleaning and fret polishing. For many years I've used FastFret to clean strings and frets after each playing - it's just a dense batt of cotton impregnated with mineral oil. For serous grime I use cotton swabs soaked with naptha (which doesn't eat varnish), and then wipe the ebony and rosewood boards with a wisp of mineral or cedar oil. Note that most fretboard oils have a mineral oil base. As does baby oil. 1 1 Quote
G Man Posted February 17 Posted February 17 I went with that Miracle Polishing cloth Menehune posted via Reverb. It's identical to Gorgomyte and I can get it cheap on Amazon. 2 1 Quote

scottcald Posted February 18 Posted February 18 Just to toss it out to the collective, Lizard Spit also has a fret and fretboard cleaning set. Not sure how it compares to gorgomyte. I think the guy who invented gorgomyte passed away a few years back, so I guess no one took up the business. 2 Quote
