Yep - the cap IS thinner on that one. I would have chimed in earlier. In '98-'99 I recall Jol describing how they milled the tops down from a thicker piece, but on these, even if it was milled down, it would have been a thinner piece of maple to begin with.

Jeez - at least I HOPE so!

That was a stunning run of guitars, and I think that Eric's quilts were the pick of the litter.

The veneer on the old Sunbursts/Standards/Specials is literally paper thin-heavy stock paper, but not even cardboard thick-real thin stuff.

The original Sunbursts and Standards? Think construction paper from Elementary School...

These are a bit thicker.

(Awesome pic, Eric!)

Something that doesn't get mentioned enuff on this one is the color. It's more Cherry Sunburst than 59 Burst, and not in that iffy kind of way that some older factory bursts have come out.

It's candy-licous. Life Saver-esque. Cest nu pas, un chapeau.

The top is drop dead. How many SB77's were made? Seems to me like there was 12 or less? That beats the Jimi post by 288. Does anyone recall?

From my understanding it was 3 in this color and 3 in Trans Red.

If I recall, they limited it to the number of NOS gold Sustainblock bridges they had on hand, which was up to 12 or so. I don't know exactly how many were ordered, but have seen a few different ones from that run, mostly in the Sunburst finish (and one of the Trans Red ones).

I had heard that there were either six or nine. But yes, it was based on the hardware available as I recall.

When I asked Jol and Kim in the past they told me 12. At least a few were in 59 burst, at least one was in trans red quilt (made from the same maple blank as this one) and at least one was in honey/natural with birdseye-quilt.

 6, 8, 9, 12, or so! I guess that about covers it. Still a very limited run on a very nice guitar. I do recall that it was limited to the NOS Sustain Blocks.

Non- thread related - I wonder if they ever found anymore four digits laying around in cases? Did Peter pick that one up?

Bumping from Coffee Comedy in Sea Isle City, NJ. Hope all's well in HFCland! Someone had asked about the top thickness. From Jol:

Dave,

It was the same as the Standard. .100"

Dave:

Wow-you're about a block from my in-laws' place on 39th. Feel free to stop on in and say hello.

Well, either Jol's memory is a bit off on these as there were so few and it was years ago, or mine just ended up thinner than the rest (also possible). Here's another shot of the guitar with a ruler...it's just over 1mm (as opposed to 2.5mm). Regardless, whoever wins the auction will be happy.

That's about 4 times the thickness of the 80s Standards and Sunbursts!

Oh my God!

Hair-splitting such as this should really be taken to the Gear Page.

We're measuring in millimeters now?

I resist all things Metric and declare shenanigans!

Posted

This sort of tomfoolery would only be GearPage or LPF appropriate if we were debating the relative tone, mojo or vibe differences that the different maple tops made. Then we'd have to weigh the guitars in micrograms.

Posted

he he...Good point. I don't think 1mm of maple makes a bit of difference...just trying to assist Dave as it seemed the exact thickness mattered to some, and as I had one I thought I could help.

I wasn't busting on Eric-he's one of the last people I'd be giving a hard time to!

I am now fond of the term "asshattery" though. That's a good one.

Headsup.

If any one here bid on this beware. I just got a fake e-mail sent to me saying the winning bidder bailed out & I was the winner & wanted to know when I was going to send the $$. The guy who sent this e-mail was in Fla. The real selling we all know is in MD.

EDIT*- CHANGED AN ERROR.
