Nashzonasota Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Hey everyone,I often search the 'Bay in odd ways to see what comes up...I found a 1977 Sunburst, no Serial #, small logo. Seller says it may be one of the first four.I emailed Jol who said it looks to him like one of the first four, indeed. They made those with no serial numbers before they settled on the specs for the numbered version.Hamer history here. The guitar can be found by searching Musical Instruments>Guitar>Acoustic>"Hamer".Good luck and I hope somebody grabs this. Opening bid is $1500 smackers. If I had dosh like that I'd be all over it. The last early Standard I owned (#0095) went to the 'family' and would think they'd like this one too...just a PSA, not invloved in the sale in any way.BTW...great to be back in the HFC. It's been about 4-5 years. New name but same Hamer fan!
Andrew Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Doesn't look quite right to me. Strange line on the rear of the headstock looks like a repair. Comparing the logo to Rick Nielsen's proto-Sunburst, again not quite there. Homemade logo, maybe? Really points to a headstock repair and refinish. And just how many different machines has it had in its life? Large marker dots mean it could be from the batch between about 8 0250 and 8 0350.The market is often right on these things. No bids yet at 41500, a real 1977 would have reached that easily. Every time a numberless Sunburst appears, it is one of the 'four'. I've seen more than half a dozen of the 'four' advertised over the years.Andrew.
Disturber Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 This looks like a clear neck brake. Probably just a re-fin and new logo. Did Jol really say it was one of the four? Sounds strange. Looks like lots of filled drill holes from other tuners as well that has been painted over.
HamStd Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 It was my understanding from a very good source that the first 4 "prototype" sunburst all had crown inlays at the first fret.I agree with Andrew (a real expert) and Disturber that it looks like it has suffered a neck break/repair and there has been at least three different types of tuners put on the guitar. The headstock shape looks right for a '78 as Andrew stated. Proceed with caution on this one.Peter.
cmatthes Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Beat me to it - I am highly suspicious of the originality of that one. It doesn't look right at all. Be careful...
BCR Greg Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 I have an email from the seller, he's sending me pot codes. The M6mini tuners look stupid on there, and the serial number was obliterated when the head was reshot, I bet.
mc2 Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Yeah....I don't know about this one. I emailed the guy with questions last week and he sort of distanced himself saying "my dad collects guitars and I'm selling it for him." Also claimed that big crack line is NOT a crack and said he'd send better shots of it....NEVER DID, despite me emailing a few times to remind him. Also insists it was NOT refinished, despite the plugged tuner holes sure looking like it. I brought up the same question that, if it's a headstock repair and the tuner hole plugs have clear on them, then the SN# was likely sanded off at that time. If it's legit, I would think the seller would have coughed up more photos, especially with zero bidders.

LOL The pics that he sent ME because I am a darling to deal with, unlike Jon the Prick..... It's never had Grovers, but it HAS had Schaller M6 and the current M6mini tuners. It also had Junior tuners! NONE of which show up on the earliest Sunbursts that I have owned. The logo is squirrelly, and the back of the neck shows one helluva crack repair, unless it's grain(which I doubt). I dunno......

edgar_allan_poe Posted October 21, 2006 Posted October 21, 2006 Actually, that *could* be a grain pattern. Right above it is a smaller but similar grain pattern right below the high E tuner. It doesn't look right to me either, but you never know. Guys like Greg, Andrew, and Pete know a helluva lot more than me, thats fo sho!
burningyen Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 Why does the logo look like "H A MER" rather than "HAMER"?
kizanski Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 Why does the logo look like "H A MER" rather than "HAMER"?Because it's B O GUS.
serial Posted October 22, 2006 Posted October 22, 2006 It's not like Hamer didn't have logos in 1977.
Nashzonasota Posted October 23, 2006 Author Posted October 23, 2006 I am humbled by the group's collective knowledge. Tanks.
