sonic1974 Posted February 9, 2008 Posted February 9, 2008 Hi guys,That thread about Kiss got me thinking about Thin Lizzy. I don't actually know them super well, but always loved their guitar tones. Even before I got a guitar, I would hear their tunes on the radio and think, what the heck is that, the guitar sounds awesome!I gotta get me some Thin Lizzy cds, where's a good place to start? What kinda equipment were those guys using? I'm guessing some great Les Pauls for a start.peace, rob b.
Brooks Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 classic band, one of my faves. classic line up guitarists gorham/robertson used les pauls w/ mini hums (deluxe?) thru marshalls. i saw the chinatown tour ~80, w/ gorham & snowy white there are some decent best of comps, my fave lizzy albums are live and dangerous (not very live but definately dangerous), black rose (w/ gary moore), jailbreak, chinatown. my very fave is the Peel Sessions, which is a best of performances on John Peels BBC show, great raw versions! old truck edit:
MCChris Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 My favorite albums are the ones with the Robertson/Gorham lineup (Night Life, Fighting, Jaibreak, Johnny the Fox, Bad Reputation, Live and Dangerous) with Johnny the Fox being the best IMO.Pretty much Les Pauls (Deluxes for Gorham; Customs, Standards and P90 Pauls for Robbo) into JMP Marshalls.
DaveL Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I have a soft spot for the later stuff, Renegade, Live/Life andThunder and Lightning (Holy War has some GREAT double guitar)I also love the Lynott single "Out in the fields" with Gary Moore whichI think was the last thing that Phil, it rocked... but really it's all good...
alantigold Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 +1000 for "Live And Dangerous"."Jailbreak"."Life/Live".I'd put "Thunder & Lightning", "Black Rose" and "Bad Reputation" a notch below those.Alan

Disturber Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 Live and Dangerous is a good place to start, as stated above. Other classic albums are Jailbreak, Bad reputation, Black Rose, Johnny the Fox etc. Their last album Thunder and Lightning is more of a heavy metal album than the bands other releases. It is harder and with more agressive guitarwork by John Sykes. It's very 80s. Personally I don't hold it as one of the bands best releases. Start with the albums above and if you like them work your way through the bands entire catalgue. For that classic Lizzy guitartone: Marshall amps, Les Paul guitars, a wah wah here and there. Scott Gorham played almost all guitars on the Bad Reputation album, one of the albums which has their best recorded guitartone put on tape (together with Live & Dangerous). He used a bunch of Marshall 2104 combos for the leads. He also used one combo live on stage together with some Marshall stacks, and the rythm guitars was played through the stacks, and the leads through the combo. That is how he got that open airy lead tone. Classic!
Steve Haynie Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 A flanger is a must to get into some of those Thin Lizzy guitar sounds.
Turdus Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 All these years later, I still want a LP Deluxe in tobacco, or cherry SB. This is all due to seeing the pics of TH, on the back of "Jailbreak", when I was a teen. Jailbreak is still one of my faves from the 70's. Just my opinion, but I don't think any of their other records were as consistent as that one.
Brother Noud Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I saw the Black Rose tour with Gary Moore, and then the Chinatown tourwith Snowy White. Scott Gorham had a broken leg on that tour. Didn't stophis tasty licks though! One of the best guitar bands ever, period. Their drummer, Brian Downey, is also at the top of my heap. And Phil, his talent was immense: writing, fronting, and laying down the pick driven bass lines with a rock warriors zest.
Punkavenger Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I've had "Vagabonds of the Western World" on vinyl since the 70's ... one of my favorites
jettster Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 One of my all time favorite bands and the second concert I ever went to, in 78 or 79 they opened for Journey on the Evolution tour, talk about a killer show.Their whole catalog is killer but the standouts for me are Live And Dangerous, Bad reputation and Jailbreak
Stevieconlon Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 I'm a big fan too. Jailbreak/Chinatown era.
Disturber Posted February 10, 2008 Posted February 10, 2008 A flanger is a must to get into some of those Thin Lizzy guitar sounds. And some heroin, forgot about that. Both Phil and Scott had trouble with the sweet stuff.

One of the most impressive guitar concerts I've ever attended. I can still clearly picture the awesome lead-trading during "Emerald" and Gorham's belt-length hair being blown all over the place...
