holLoWskull Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Dear God man...$300!!! Good for you. I've seen them in the 92' catalog, but pictures of the real thing up close are so much nicer. Just guessing on value, but I'd assume if you were to take your $300 purchase price and multiply it by 10 you'd be somewhere in the ballpark (again I'm just speculating, it really comes down to timing and finding the right buyer willing to spend the bucks for something as rare as your bass). Beautiful bass regardless of what it's true value is, and a wonderful score at $300 (where did you find it for that cheap?). Hold on to that one if you can, I'm sure it'll only go up in value as Hamer continues to find its way onto the radar of more players and collectors.

Maybe someone here has a receipt from a bass of that period that they can serve up for a general idea?
Mindseyes Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Wellcome and that is bad a$$!!!!!!!!!!as for value i'm sure your PM box is overflowing with offers by now!
ecnal Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Cool bass!Looks like something Les Claypool might plunk around on.
generic Posted December 12, 2008 Author Posted December 12, 2008 Haha, thanks again guys! I wish I could take credit for some heinous act that delivered this into my hands, but alas...someone put it up on the local craigslist for $300, and I just went and picked it up. Very anticlimactic really, since I knew nothing of the bass when I purchased it. Hamertek - yeah that was me. I happen to live on the south side of Mordor, if you'd like to swing by cmathes - I'd LOVE to see that video. get crackin' on that conversion!! Feynman - they put the serial up on the back of the headstock, and its just stamped in. Kinda hard to see, really.

veatch Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 More proof that boomers are the coolest inlays *ever*...
Hamerica Posted December 12, 2008 Posted December 12, 2008 Holy Cow!That has to be one of the greatest scores this year. That bass is 4 digit Standard $350 worthy. I was within 50 yards of Hamstd scoring his and those are rare. They are beautiful unbelievable. Congrats!

specialk Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Thanks! Forgive my ignorance, but what does "That bass is 4 digit Standard $350 worthy" mean? That means you got the score of the decade, bro! 4 digit Standards regularly go for a minimum of $3k, usually much higher. So getting that bass for $300, that is insane, like getting a 4 digit for $350!I love it, and I don't play bass. Even the gold hardware looks mighty fine on that baby!Great story, considering neither you nor the seller knew its true worth. So nobody took advantage of the other. Love it!sk
generic Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 Ahh, thanks specialk! So has anyone here had a guitar appraised before?? I really need to get this thing appraised so I can insure it, but I don't have a clue who to call or where to start looking. Anyone??
cmatthes Posted December 13, 2008 Posted December 13, 2008 Where are you located? I would avoid places like Gruhn's or Mandolin Bros. for appraising values on Hamers - they really have no idea about that sector of the market. The VG price guides and Blue Book publications are also not reliable indicators.Try a dealer like BCR Greg here - I know he has appraised some high-value Hamers in the past.
generic Posted December 13, 2008 Author Posted December 13, 2008 Well, it's worth more than $2500.00 . . . LOL. No sour grapes, ecnal!
mirrorimij Posted December 14, 2008 Posted December 14, 2008 I've got a Japanese documentary that another HFC'er sent me that was made around the time that bass came out. There's a good deal of footage of a Chicago session bassist working out on one of those as well as some detailed overviews. I should probably find a way to get that converted from VHS to a digital format, eh?Chris, I've looked for my copy of that Japanese documentary on VHS and I can't find it. I have the ability to transfer from VHS to DVD. PM me if you want me to do that for you.

PM me if you want me to do that for you. Thanks, Bob! I have to dig it up. The one that I thought was the documentary is actually the '89 Hamer Promo video. Watched that one again just for fun - there's some COOL stuff in there. Actually, Generic - your bass sure looks an awful lot like the one pictured in the catalog. Here's a really crappy scan, but it has some very similar/matching woodgrain:
generic Posted December 16, 2008 Author Posted December 16, 2008 Holy cow, cmatthes - I think you might be right. If it isn't the same bass, Hamer made two with identical wood grain
cmatthes Posted December 16, 2008 Posted December 16, 2008 There are two little curls in the maple neck-through block between the pickups and at the end of the fingerboard that look exactly like the ones on your pics. Again, my apologies for the lousy scan, but the actual catalog shows them much clearer.
