santellavision Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Anyone use a Stest trem? Opinions?http://stetsbar.com/
Steve Haynie Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 Do a search of this message board and you will see that the Stetsbar has popped up in a few threads. It is tempting to buy one just to see what it is like for myself. One is on eBay right now.
sw686blue Posted February 26, 2009 Posted February 26, 2009 The only opinion that I can offer is that it's one fugly trem! That's all.
zorrow Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I don't find it ugly -- I actually think it looks great with the square base plate.BTW, I've felt myself tempted to buy one, just because I find it cool.
phoenix Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 steve, I have one of the new lighter ones. it is gold with a creme base though. name your price. It has only a few hours of use. I'll try my best to make you feel unclean and violated if it's the genuine eBay experience you crave.
santellavision Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 What concerns me is that everyone who's selling them have only barely used them. That's not a good sign. I really want a trem for my LP, but I don't want to buy one and hate it.
serial Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 They're silly easy to install and remove. They do look like they take up more real estate than they do-I got one from Steve (THANKS AGAIN!!) and installed it on my Electraglide II. It doesn't do dramatic Floyd Rose stuff, but it definitely drops a good bit more than a Bigsby or a Jazzmaster-style trem. Definitely worth looking into. As for only clean ones being for sale-you'll probably also notice that there aren't that many for sale at any given time. There are a bunch that DO get used, I'm sure. Nice trem.
atquinn Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 ...I'll try my best to make you feel unclean and violated if it's the genuine eBay experience you crave. Sig-worthy! :D
santellavision Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 I just found this. Worth a try for $59. Bowen Handle
DavidE Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I just found this. Worth a try for $59. Bowen Handle No, it isn't. I owned one a long time ago. It sucked. The Stetsbar is far superior.
Guest pirateflynn Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I really want a trem for my LP .... Working on some Alex Lifeson stuff?
santellavision Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 Working on some Alex Lifeson stuff?Just my cover band stuff.
Jeff R Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 +1 on the Bowen Handle. I got one when I first started playing. It was a wonderful tool for teaching you how to properly tune your guitar - you never stopped.
MCChris Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 +1 on the Bowen Handle. I got one when I first started playing. It was a wonderful tool for teaching you how to properly tune your guitar - you never stopped.HA! I was gonna say ... friends don't let friends use Bowen Handles.
veatch Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 +1 on the Bowen Handle. I got one when I first started playing. It was a wonderful tool for teaching you how to properly tune your guitar - you never stopped. That about covers it. Has anyone out there had a *positive* experience with the Bowen? I couldn't stand it, personally...
serial Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 They still make/sell those?!I bought a killer '75 Ibanez Destroyer from Freedom Guitar in the 90s. Wish I still had that one, but it funded a big chunk of #0017.
veatch Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 IIRC (could be bad info...) the ones they are still selling now are NOS from the original production run.Yet another testament to their quality...Couldn't sell them then, and still can't now...
phoenix Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 IIRC (could be bad info...) the ones they are still selling now are NOS from the original production run. jeez, the website pictures looks like they went back to the heavier ones...uh oh. I have a trem guitar so I thought I'd go back to having a stop tail as well.
santellavision Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 To continue the trem search, I just bought one of these. (I'll get it in a few days) I think this may be my solution to putting a temp trem on a stop-tail guitar. The Tonequest Report did a great review of it. Vibramate
zorrow Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I feel really tempted to buy a Gibson Gothic Flying V and then install on it one of those black Stetsbars --the ones with the iron cross. I think that would look cool as hell. --ok, that was cheesy... but what do you want? I'm getting too much into doom and black metal lately.
Steve Haynie Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 To continue the trem search, I just bought one of these. (I'll get it in a few days) I think this may be my solution to putting a temp trem on a stop-tail guitar. The Tonequest Report did a great review of it.VibramateThat looks like a good idea, but what are you going to mount that on?
burningyen Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 With only 2 screws anchoring to the body, the Vibramate looks like it could end up loosening the mounting studs in your guitar.
santellavision Posted April 23, 2009 Author Posted April 23, 2009 It's going on a Les Paul, The Tone quest review says it works perfectly. So, I'm going to give it a try. Just got it yesterday, but haven't had a minute to mount it yet. They used it in their review on a LP and really dug it. GE Smith is using them on his LPs too.
zorrow Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 If I had designed that system, I would have put a bridge with roller saddles on the base plate too. That way you would have two screws more to anchor the system to the guitar. BTW, I see the B5 is not included, so you'd have to pay like 120 bucks for the Bigsby, plus the Vibramate at 59.99. I think I prefer the Stetsbar then, in spite of the higher price. In addition, this video shows how extreme you can go with it: Nevertheless, please let us know how the Vibramate goes.
phoenix Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Eric Stets and his bar were cool to my ears: besides it fulfilled every claim according to the review.
