iPods SUCK!!!!!

Recommended Posts

My son't iPod is having problems yet again...

Had to re-initialize, try to restore and try to reformat. It seemed to work, then crashed while trying to re-load the music.

The operating software sucks, the support sucks and it appears that the hardware probably sucks too.

Glad I got a Rio.

haven't had a single issue with mine in three years of daily use. wonder if some virus or other malicious code found its way onto the thing?

My kids got me one for Father's Day, so far I love it. No problems or issues here!

DaveE,

Sorry but for an Applie product like the iPod to succeed and thrive in the PC Wintel-dominated world it HAS to provide a better solution. It is not cheaper than the others, which has been Wintel's primary advantage of Apple in the past, it simply works better.

iTunes is great, much better than any other MP3 management and CD burning software I've tried. Perhaps it is an issue with your PC that is causing issues with your iPod? Mayber a driver incompatibility or .DLL problem? There is also a long history of Apple software "breaking" on PC's due to code revisions by Microsoft...

As it turns out, the iPod is dead. Seems like a bad hard drive.

I take back what I said about iPod support. It's true for phone support that lasts only 90 days, but we have an Apple store on the other side of town (that's where we bought the iPod) and we took it in. They have a "genius" desk where they give you one on one customer service. Pretty freaking incredible really. Sure enough, they confirmed there is a hardware problem. Rather than take it and send it in for repair, they pulled out what is probably a refurb from the back room (but it looks brand spanking new) and gave it to us. No hassles at all. That's top notch support... if you have an Apple retail store in your town.

Still, we've had more issues with the Apple on both a software and a hardware level than should be expected. My Rios have been 100% trouble free.

Oh yeah, I should add that there was another customer there returning their 4th dead iPod. Doesn't say much for quality of the hardware...

Hey DavidE,

I thought everybody was "pro" I-Pod and Apple? Now you guys are bagging on your I-Pod's because of technical problems? I'm sorry to hear about that. Check out Red Chair software's Anapod Explorer. Much better design than the stock Apple software that you get with your I-Pod. Darc and Mobster already have a copy to manage their I-Pod MP3 files and they like it. Ask them about it. I have a Creative Labs Jukebox 3 and use the Redchair Software Notmad Explorer for my Jukebox 3 and it works fine on my humble PC based system. You also get upgrades every couple of months if you buy the universal edition for $35.00. Check it out!!

I thought my wife killed my Ipod Mini. She dropped / slammed it onto the basement cement floor while working out. Put a hell of a dent in the corner. Rebooted and its been fine.

I've got Denison Icelink for my car that allows me to control it via the cd changer controls. I take it everywhere. One of the best technology purchases I've made.

The new one had to be updated and restored before it started working. Loaded a bit over 1000 songs before we started having problems again. Finally got it going again and my son finished loading another 850 songs an album at a time and that worked. Definitely seems software related. I seriously don't have any of these issues with my Rios.

Based on what I read on ipodlounge.com, there are LOTS of people who have problems with iPods. I think you guys are among the lucky though ours ran 9 months with few, but irritating, problems.

I do like Anapod a lot, but I have had my share of glitches with the iPod. Anapod seems to get a little bit confused in terms of timing, and fails to connect with the iPod now and again. In a couple of extreme cases I've had to reset the iPod and repair all of the files to get back to where I started, and once that resulted in the loss of all my files. Anapod/ iPod is especially fussy with older PCs and/or USB 1.0 ports, but I've had weird results even with up-to-date hardware.

Haven't quite put my finger on it yet. My iPod has actually seen relatively little use because I haven't found a source of MP3's I'm satisfied with, excepting AllOfMP3 which is too good to be true (read: unethical and legal only in the sneakiest sense of the word.)

We've had our iPod for almost a year. Won it at a Merchants of Cool gig from Apple (Hamer/Saxon content). STILL can't get it to work with the Toshiba laptop, but that's a whole different story...

I'll get it going eventually, damnit!!!

Lost time, lost music...(sigh)

Hey Darc,

Have you downloaded the latest version of Anapod Explorer from Redchair Software for your I-Pod? I just downloaded the latest version of Notmad Explorer for my Creative Labs Jukebox 3 and it works great!! Try contacting Redchair Software concerning your issues with the software.

BUZZZ!!

Sorry, the judges have ruled your post "NHC", Chris.

Yes, as a matter of fact I just upgraded last week, and so far so good. Only down side is, as far as I've been able tell, Anapod XStreamer is no longer supported. That was a pretty cool program.

The only people bagging on their I-Pods are the ones who paid for their music - how 'bout you?

Hey mojohn,

Let's not start an argument about who's paying and not paying for music, ok? That's getting old already. We all know who does what and if you don't, who cares?

Hey Craig...a topic we can agree on! :D

Have you turned on the music library sharing feature in iTunes? There are a bunch of folks with iTunes on the network in my office and I've been having fun listening to stuff in their collections. You can't copy the files, only listen to them.

hey j, i haven't messed with that yet since most of the people here aren't allowed to "have" itunes :-)

sounds cool. the IT guys canned most peoples itunes when they found an art director with 15 gigs of illegal downloads. they were wondering why their bandwidth went to almost zero at certain times of the day. pretty funny if you are not HIM. the only problem i have ever had with itunes was an authorization issue that had a funny error message on my imac at home. took a couple of minutes to fix and bam.
