cmatthes Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Got the veneer off....will post a pic when I get up....looks like a 2 piece top on a 91??I had a '91 and a '92 LP, both had center-joined, 2 piece tops.
kurtsstuff Posted May 14, 2010 Author Posted May 14, 2010 Here's whats under the veneer....no birdseye as I hoped...tiny sander burns that looked like birdseye lol!!
velorush Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Maybe I've spent too much time looking at 'junk' cars behind someone's barn and envisioning what could be... (wife rolls eyes) but that actually doesn't look bad at all!
kurtsstuff Posted May 14, 2010 Author Posted May 14, 2010 funny but sad thing is...when they painted the guitar all the electronics were still in the guitar and just pushed down into the cavity's pickups too!! paint all over em and the pots/switch etc...
atquinn Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Looks much better with the veneer off! I'd still want to get it refinished if it were mine though. Probably wouldn't cost too much to get just the top done in an obnoxious sparkle purple (which is what I'd go with ) -Austin
proxmax Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 seriously, the momentary look is really unique - i like it!
cmatthes Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 I like it just like that too. I'll send ya $350 for it right now!
Punkavenger Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 I also like it like that! Throw in an electronics kit from RS and a fillmore set and yr done

Wow that's amazing Looks like you are on the right track. I've got a couple of quick questions about the guitar. Is its serial number stamped in the wood and it has made in the USA under it? Is the binding in the cutaway the same thickness as it is around the rest of the body, so you can see the maple cap under it?
kurtsstuff Posted May 15, 2010 Author Posted May 15, 2010 The whole guitar had been stripped and sanded and the serial number now reads 6 6 6 ...how metal is that!!?? lol!! The binding is the same width all around the guitar and in the cutaway...A good thick maple cap is there. I keep picking away at it and got most of the glue off and did some very prelim sanding.. Now it's time to turn it over to a person that know what the hell their doing before I completely ruin it...

You have done the hard work of getting the stuff off it now, so that's going to save you some bucks if you want a refin.

Yeah...it is/will be a nice guitar...and hopefully once I decide on either going solid color or a tobacco burst sorta thing..it'll still sound as play as good as it did before the surgery...In the Neck p/u cavity it's stamped in ink "B Gold" so...was a bullion all gold top and body at one time??
kurtsstuff Posted May 15, 2010 Author Posted May 15, 2010 Allrighty then..decision made....goin to Stike for a Tobacco burst thing
Feynman Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 Allrighty then..decision made....goin to Stike for a Tobacco burst thing Excellent choice! I can't wait to see the finished product. Everything Stike does appears to be top notch, so I bet a traditional burst is going to be gorgeous on this guitar.
cmatthes Posted May 16, 2010 Posted May 16, 2010 I was going to suggest that you could always do it in Zebra stripes...
kurtsstuff Posted May 16, 2010 Author Posted May 16, 2010 I was going to suggest that you could always do it in Zebra stripes...that would be cool...A Nugent Whackmaster!!
kurtsstuff Posted May 18, 2010 Author Posted May 18, 2010 Guitar is on it's way to Stike...Will land next monday so.. Maybe he'll take pics of the progress and post them when he starts work on it!!?
kurtsstuff Posted May 25, 2010 Author Posted May 25, 2010 Well...the guitar is now in Stikes capable hands....I haven't heard anything yetbut hopefully thats not a bad thing!!?? lol!!
cmatthes Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 Well...the guitar is now in Stikes capable hands....I haven't heard anything yetbut hopefully thats not a bad thing!!?? lol!!Not at all. I got a "teaser" shot of something he's working on for me the other night. Looking forward to seeing that one up and running, since it's been nothing but a collection of old parts since I got it a few years ago.
Stike Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 I'll post a pic when I'm done cleaning up the top. The prior owner is a nut job fo sho. Just guessing here but he really wanted a flametop and once he go the original finish off tried a faux flame top via pyrography. Once that obviously didn't work that must have been when the veneer went on. I still cant figure out why there were gouges filled with Bondo where the maple meets the binding. Oy vey.
veatch Posted May 25, 2010 Posted May 25, 2010 ...tried a faux flame top via pyrography. <snicker> "Flame top". <snicker> What kind of idiot would burn the top of a guitar? Inside joke - don't answer that, Stike...
kurtsstuff Posted June 8, 2010 Author Posted June 8, 2010 Got a pic from Stike today....lookin better already!!!
