eminor Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Now just $800 paypal'd AND shipped. FS is a Hamer Special from 1980 in very good condition with the checkerboard on the headstock and a set of period-correct late 70s Bill Lawrence L500 pickups, which were endorsed and used by Joe Perry at the time. I must emphasize how good this guitar sounds. If I could get along with the neck, I wouldn't be selling it. The pickups measure out at 12.15 and 12.17. Only issues are some finish checking at the neck joint - in the finish only, and a few nicks down to the wood on the body edges. Otherwise the guitar is in great condition - it's got the original sustainblock bridge, tuners, etc. It is medium weight at 7 lbs 14 oz - enough for some oomph. Ships in OHSC which is also in very good condition for $800 shipped/paypal'd (REDUCED). Guitar and case are both very clean with no odors or mustiness. Guitar is in solid 8/10 condition, better than one would expect for a 30 year old guitar. The top is beautiful on this one as well. alternate view of front of guitar and pickups Headstock face Finish Checking Case guitar in case Back of Headstock back of guitar Back of pickups dents and bumps
Russ Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 I just made the same noise I make when I see an incredibly super colossally hot babe... OOOOF!
bubs_42 Posted July 15, 2010 Posted July 15, 2010 Hameritis started in the 90's. The picture just looks like some checking unless i'm not focusing on the correct spot. This Special looks great and unique with those BL Pups. Good luck with the sale.

eminor Posted July 15, 2010 Author Posted July 15, 2010 Thanks guys - I changed it to say "finish checking." In any event, it's finish only. And yes, the finish is nitro and so this isn't surprising. It's really a thin finish and has shrunk back, even on the top. Hard to photo though.
eminor Posted July 17, 2010 Author Posted July 17, 2010 If I'm way off on pricing, please let me know. If it is any lower, I may just give it to the local school. It is a bit hard to believe these tend to go for less than $1000, but that does seem to be the case. I attempted to price it right, but please let me know if I'm out of line.

You're not that far off of the pricing. The problem is the market and it has driven the price of Specials down below the $800 range. The Bill Lawrence creme pups are rare but aren't the original pickups and many people looking for those early Specials want that mojo which could very well be in those specially wound Dimarzio PAFs. I bought a Special with Bill Lawrence pickups in it and the sound was highly exceptional, but my playing style is rather hard and percussive and I kept on making the pickups make clicky noises whenever my hand would slam down on the strings. Your paintjob besides the hameritis (finish checking) is in rather good if not very good shape. It's a great guitar and you might just need to have a good bit of patience in selling her, it could take a few weeks and you might even need to sell it on eBay. The Bill Lawrence pickups are amazing sounding, but not enough players know about them and so the aftermarket for them is really small regardless if they are rare and amazing sounding. You shouldn't lower the price much at all, just take the time to find the right buyer IMHO.
eminor Posted July 17, 2010 Author Posted July 17, 2010 Thank you for the feedback. I've adjusted the price and we'll see how it goes.
cmatthes Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 "Hameritis" is a milky clouding of the top/clearcoat, usually around the neck joint, but can occur on the neck or elsewhere on the body as well. It is an affliction that is mostly found on USA Hamers starting in the mid-90s until maybe around 2000, although there are some one-off random examples that I've seen since then. I have not seen Hameritis on a pre-90s Hamer. Finish checking is just finish checking, and stress cracks are just stress cracks!

Isn't that technically called "blush"?
Kurt L Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 An example of Hameritis... BTW, it doesn't affect feel, stability or tone... purely a cosmetic issue. In fact, I love Hameritis. I got an incredible deal on my Artist Custom because of it.

cmatthes Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 So... Hameritis is just moisture getting into the nitro? Isn't that technically called "blush"?It is actually more like the glue (typically near the joint, but can impact other areas) reacting badly with the clearcoat. It also includes fingerprints or buffing powder under the clearcoat, but on top of the color coats.

Another angle: Also, not pictured is a light fingerprint on the upper wing. Pizza-day? I kind of like the finish flaws on the Standard. It gives the guitar character and is always good for a story if anyone asks.
svl Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 It's on the 'Bay now, just in case anyone was considering it.http://cgi.ebay.com/1980-Hamer-Special-w-1...6#ht_500wt_1154

I didn't have even one indication of interest on this board, so I figure I may as well put it up to a wider audience. If at the time there are no bids on the eBay auction and someone here wants it for the price I put forth in the OP, please let me know and I will try to end the auction.
Punkavenger Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 No offense ... beautiful guitar. At $825 thats an extremely fair price. I'd love to have it myself. It's just that most are broke and/or saving their money for the upcoming apocalypse right now!

There are a couple dozen watchers, but that can go any which way I know.

eminor Posted July 20, 2010 Author Posted July 20, 2010 It didn't sell. I have relisted it on ebay with a BIN. There are more pictures there as well. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...=STRK:MESELX:ITPrice is $800 shipped/paypal'd if anyone here wants it.
eminor Posted July 21, 2010 Author Posted July 21, 2010 So it is back on the bay, but let me know if a HFC member wants it. I'm also selling a cool Modulus and a tres cool black Schecter strat on the bay if you check my other auctions.
eminor Posted July 23, 2010 Author Posted July 23, 2010 Decided not to sell the Modulus for now, but added a '68 Gibson SG to my auctions. The Hamer is still available.
Jim Browne Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 That's a great looking Special. I've never seen (or noticed) three side dots at the twelfth fret (my '81 & '82 Specials have the typical two dots). How unusual is that? Really nice Schecter Strat, too. Both are beyond my current budget, though!
eminor Posted July 27, 2010 Author Posted July 27, 2010 Ok, no sale on eBay and no sale here. I'll be taking these pickups out and putting something else in there. If it's really a 6-700 dollar guitar (which is absolutely incredible to me), there's no need to keep pickups in there that are worth half that before I sell it or give it away.
