Between Body & Neck . What is more important?

I ever heard someone said if neck made from great quality wood That make a good sound . Neck is more important than the body. It is true or not ? I had thought 50/50 for both. So What do u think?

Strictly a guess here.

The body has more mass than the neck, so the body is more important to tone.

I would say a 70/30 split, body/neck.

When I 1st approached assembling a guitar from parts, I was told that I should find and buy the best neck I could. I could swap out bodies at will if I had a great neck. I'm not sure it always works that way but in bolt on guitars it seems to be working for me. (this does not take into account neck wood tone,but mearly shape& feel)

With setnecks? You got solid body, Hollowbody, Chambered Body and a bunch in between. And each has it's very own sound. ( I guess that is also true with bolt ons)

In my limited experience I have found that no matter how much I like the sound of each guitar, when I look at which ones get played the most, it's the ones that I like the feel of in my left hand that get played everyday.

I hope that makes since.

SpecialK and Hbom both have it right.

First you want to find the neck that's right for you. Then you swap it around on different bodies until it sounds right.

Different bodies/woods = different tones. Your ears will tell you when it's right.

Thanks for any opinion. I thought close to experts (specialk,Hbom,hamerhead) . but the thing was i heard make me doubt. My friend want new guitar and this one must be not Emphasize brand, beauty , just good sound only. I offer Warmoth for him ( exghange rate today good for order ) but He can order only one thing.

between neck or body. when I get expert's confirm I will tell him choose Body. In my country have 2-3 custom shops . They r very good handcraft but they cant control quality of them woods. I seen some guitars beauty more than Suhr but they cant make good sound like Suhr. Thanks.........

playability comes top for me for any guitar - I can either put up with of fix the sound of the Actual rest of the guitar if needed - within reason! Mind you one of the best elecrics I've ever played was a 60s Martin bolt on - almost all wrong based on my previous, but the over all sound and fit for playing made it the most inspirational guitar I think I've ever had a to go on. Weird eh?

Thinking on it the guy who owns it as his birth year guitar was very surprised at the versitile sounds out of my maple Cali elite complete with very ceramic PATB-2 - not exactly subtle but beat the he'll out of my old 91 LP and made his stock 70s SG (with dirty finger) sound pretty ordinary!

After that all my preconceptions went out of the window!

Apart from neck playability - that's THE primary req for me these days.

IMHO, the quality/cut of the joint(s) whether it's bolt, set or to a degree, N/T; then mixed with good, light to medium weight (again IMHO) and traditional neck and body woods. I have different preferences for a traditional strat, traditional tele, set-neck Gibson scale, Floyd'ed shredder, but I'm not going to waste bandwidth listing them.

Can I go 33/33/33 percent?

For the one percentage point left over, use poetic justice, like nickel versus black straplocks.

Just stumbled across this thread (apologies...). The neck can be a huge tonal factor (it's effect on playability is a given). After doing some fretwork & adjusting the neck on my '62 SilverTone/Kay 1410, my luthier and I were both marvelling at the tone and resonance of the little axe. The body's basically a POS laminate designed to keep costs to a minimum, but the neck is a nice beefy, aged mahogany, and according to the luthier, is largely responsible for its rich tone and sustain.

FWIW, I'm curious to try a Pearly Gates in place of/addition to the DeArmond cheese grater single coil, but I'm scared to bastardize this any more than I already have (replaced stock tuners w/Pings). Still one of the best "deals" I ever got, picked it up at a garage sale in VG condition for $10! It inspires more creativity than any other guitar I've ever owned.

I use to think the body wood was the biggest player when it came to the tone of a guitar until I got this.........

A PRS Modern Eagle with a solid Brazilian rosewood neck, this thing just sounds so different than my other hog and maple bodied and necked guitars. Its changed my mind on how much the neck wood plays a part in the tone of a stringed instrument ......YMMV
