Guitar: Hamer Californian

Location: Aurora Co

Wanted: Alexi Laiho Sig (Edwards or -600) or Jackson rr24

Price: Looking for $400 ono or trades for the above ^^

References: Ebay: Cullen_29, various forums under feilong29 (Caparison, ESP, Seymour Duncan, Metal Guitarist, Seven String, Harmony Central, AtBMusic and others)

Hey guys!

Please don't be insulted as I just joined this forum and am already posting a for sale ad, but, I didn't know there was a Hamer Forum until a few days ago! I'm on a few other forums though: Caparisonforum.com, sevenstring.org, seymour duncan, metalguitarist.org, guitarsabmusic.au, esp, and some others. I buy, sell and trade all the time and have plenty of references and I also have feedback on ebay: Cullen_29, so, with that:

I have a Hamer Californian that has an upgraded floyd rose which is now an OFR in black, and the pickups have been upgraded to a Dimarzio Super Distortion 3 in the bridge and Air Norton S in the neck. I liken the Californian to a Caparison Horus, which I've had two of, and it is a great complimentary guitar to have. I'm wanting to get an ESP Alexi Laiho sig, so, I am going to part ways with the Hamer. I have a link to photos in my photobucket, and don't forget, the pics with the black floyd are the current ones. The gold floyd was a licensed trem and it didn't hold water to the OFR.

Again, please accept my apologies, but this is the perfect place to put this ad. If you have an Alexi Laiho (non-200 models, edwards model preferred but will consider all) or Jackson rr24 in black w/yellow bevels you would like to trade, definitely swing it by me! Guitar is also on Ebay, but can be taken down if a member on here wants it. Thanks for your time guys. If anything, if I end up not getting a response, it won't hurt my feelings to hold onto the Californian a little bit longer. Thanks!

Cullen

Not a lot of love for the far east models here (OFR or not) but as the US one's remain high in price some are turning to the import line.

Perhaps if you gave a ball park you may tempt someone to lay down some cash.....if it's cheap enough.

Ya I see a lot of the US models and the prices are pretty high! Must be an awesome Hamer! I saw a US, or, maybe it's still on ebay, for $1799 I believe. What is it about the import line that isn't as appealing? Besides not having an Ebony fretboard? Thanks for the post though. It clears some things up!

Just that it's not a US made one, although the earlier stuff is well made and even the current stuff is acceptable considering the price new. Saying this the situation has changed somewhat over the last 10 years and the US one's have jumped in price (we used to see them here in the sub $400 region) which has made some people look to the import line.

I know Cali's pretty well but i know little about the import time lines but someone here may be able to give you an approximate date and origin - like a lot of things the early one's are more prized than the later one's.

So the US ones, like the one for $1800 on Ebay, used to much much cheaper? Man, I wish I knew about them then :D I would definitely like to get some knowledge on the one I have. I'll do some research! Thanks.

Oh yeah. I had a hard time just about giving away a iridescent Cali Elite just a few years ago for $550. It wasn't 100% perfect by any means, but it wasn't much longer before ones that were in the same or worse condition started going for a lot more.

I think I'm gonna hold onto it. Import or not, its a unique guitar. Sorry for the short sprint here but I plan on being active on here and get to know you guys as well as learn more about these guitars! Thanks!

We're glad to have you aboard!

We tend to underappreciate here import guitars, mostly when they have the "Hamer" logo on it. However, those import Calis are great guitars and I think the price you're asking for is more than fair.

I understand and thanks! I still might give it up if someone wants it! I might have to keep an eye out for a US one of these days.

Nice looker n that but it's gotta be a US model for me. I actually had a Korean Diablo (which I modded/painted then sold in 2011). Cost me personally upwards of $900 (US) & sold for $300 (US)...

I don't know why the imports are so under-appreciated either. Once I put a Gotoh FR & EMGs in the import, it rocked. Struggled like a biatch to get $300 for it in the UK. Trade that off with the tree-fiddy (US) I payed for my 91 Centaura (again, US :D ), It more than balanced out (for me)...

its a sad truth that adding high end parts to an import or partscaster is typically a losing proposition if/when you sell. i have learned this the hard way several times over.

Yeah, been there/done that, too. You're better off putting the original stuff back on and selling the good parts separately.

Ya, I just need to get a pro set up to alleviate some buzzing! That is the only thing that bugs me.

+1 Had a natural MIK Cali that previous owner had dropped some sweet hardware into- OFR, zebra SD custom (sounded GREAT!) and a JB Jr. That was a keeper at a great price... that is, until I got a USA Cali custom.

I don't know why the imports are so under-appreciated either.

Probably because they don't feel or sound like the US production.

Yeah, I get that. I meant kinda more 'in general' - i mean, my MIK hamer SS cost £350 in 96 & sounded/felt like a £350 guitar. I'd say it was at least as good as mid-priced Dean/Ibanez guitars I've owned. They fetch nothing moneywise tho. I know the guy that bought mine was well pleased with his purchase. Then again, the hardware I added was worth the price alone...

Probably because, by enlarge, Hamer's shredder's only really mean something to old git's who were in their teens or twenties in the 1980's, there was a very definitive swing back to 'traditional' models in the early 90's which is where most people nowadays would probably associate with the brand. Hence simular spec 'import' (bit of an all empassing term) Jackson's, Ibanez's, BC Rich's and Dean's have much more kudos with the under 30's as these companies continued to develop and push their shred / metal designs and high profile people use them (well the same shape anyway), Hamer kept the import line virtually stagnent and i've been under the impression as a bit of an afterthought and any new developments tended to be focused, quite rightly, on current models.

Anyway, guitars are such a fickle fashion and we've only ourselves to blame !

Is there REALLY that much of a dramatic difference in feel b/t the US Cali and the Import? I would be so interested in trying the US ver now to find out.

It was a biatch lol. A friend of mine did the paint-job. Took a couple of months due to bubbling & a greasy spot appeared so had to be redone. Turned out pretty neat. He also removed the 'SLAMMER SERIES' lettering from the headstock. I wasn't trying to pass it off as a US model, just think it looked naff...

If it's like my US Cent, trust me, a US Cali is gonna feel like guitar goodness...
