scalloped hamer sunburst usa?

Hi,

I found a hamer sunburst usa with scalloped fretboard and an 4 knobs instead of 3 (not sure what the 4 knob does). Can I assuming this work was not done by Hamer? Also, any other thoughts about this guitar would be appreciated. The serial number is hard to read but it appears to be "C 1991". It has Grover tuners and the bridge is not raised (it sits on the guitar with no block under it)

Hamer did not scallop sunburst's boards... as far as I know.

Serial # COULD be 0 1991. That number works for a 1980 Sunburst. Scallops and a fourth knob aren't Hamer though.

4th knob could be a 5-way rotary mod similar to what PRS offers.

Thanks guys for the timely response! I'll post a picture here once I figure how to (see my member picture for now). Anyway, it has a Seymour Duncan Dimebag pickup in the bridge (which I know is not stock) and JB in the neck. It also has stickers all over it but they want only $399 for it.

If there are 4 knobs & the original 3-way as it appears in that pic, then someone's been playing with a drill. If that's the case, someone must have really needed that 2nd tone pot.

You're new here, (and a hearty welcome) but, (before anyone else get in) I'll offer you the HFC Standard Tree fiffy for it right now...........

If I were you I'd buy it in an instant for $399 regardless of the "modifications" if it's a sustain block standard.

Interesting. If the bridge sits on the deck of the guitar, not raised on a block, doesn't that mean it not a sustain block Standard? If that's not the way to tell then how do know? Note, the bridge is brass. Also, I just found out it scallloped from the nut up. Darn those scallops!!!

It's a "Sunburst", not a "Standard".

The Sustainblock bridge is like a thicker plate hardtail Strat bridge - it does not sit on a wooden or plastic shim, like some of the earlier versions. If the bridge is brass that has been nickel plated, it could be a sustainblock. If it is all brass, it's probably another aftermarket mod.

didn't early sustainblocks sit on wooden shims? Mine had a plastic shim.

They sound best direct mounted IMHO.

It's probably aftermarket scalloping, but never say never with Hamer. It could have been a custom order. I think I remember seeing a Sunburst w/Floyd and scallops posted on this board once?

Pictures of the front and the electronics cavity would help clear up if the fourth knob was added later.

I think I've seen shims on guitars up to 1980 ish give or take the odd "whats left over in the bottom of the parts bin today" situation.

If it's brass it could have been swapped for a Mightymite which looked pretty similar. pics, pics, pics.

aftermarket scalloping can warp a fretboard something awful. someone told me at some point that Hamer used maple fingerboards for the Virtuosos as that was the wood they trusted most to hold up to scalloping - hearsay, or truth?

I too contemplated the purchase of this very guitar just recently, but ended up buying a minty Korean studio instead.

Modded scaloped fret board, plus the extra knobs and stickers kinda kinda killed it for me personally, but ymmv.

However it appears it's an 80's example if the guy on the phone got the serial number right.

I emailed the store. In the response the manager stated "the bullet hole stickers are covering the "original" routed holes for a toggle switch, and probably a volume control."

Sounds like this thing is pretty much swiss cheese if it's had channeling and cavities added beneath at least two of the three bullet holes.

jeebus, glad I didn't pull the trigger on that. I also spoke with the shop. Yeah, it's an old Sunburst for $400. But it'll take a lot more than that to do the reconstructive restoration surgery over at Murkat's.
