The job should go to which guy needs the work the most since they are both as highly capable as finish experts get.

If Stike's got worked lined up, give it to Murkat and if Murkat's got work lined up, give it to Stike... pretty simple.

If they both are busy, the one who's least busy should get the gig.

I think the job should go to the hungriest.

Hmm. Since it not actually ME getting it done, I'm afraid your advice is wasted, Zen. My buddy is getting a custom made ax done and the gent building it has openly admitted that the finishing portion is his least fave. The hunk o' wood they're using has a great quilt to it and my buddy wants to bring that out. I'm passing along all suggestions and letting him make the call. When he does, I'll ask him to tell ya I referred you. Gotta be worth a small commission or finders fee
