BlueRedWhite Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Hiya familiaWith the lease of my new car a few months back came an free offer for Sirius XM, which has become a great bang for the buck deal cause i get to listen to music i don't listen to normally.Being at home with the baby or driving i get to listen to great music or just a musician i didn't pay any attention before. I'm always attracted by the guitar, and the other day while on a traffic jam i discover this hell of a guitar solo..and damn!! It was Prince!!That guy would have been a star in the metal genre! So i did some wikipedia on the guy, i have to say, i got to admire him, he produce, records and play most instruments on his albums as well as having his own record studio, he's talented but is he overrated or not??I just want to know who's a fan here, and their input on his music, and besides Purple Rain, what other album (with most rock influence) can be buy these daysGracias!!
Disturber Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 No 1 fan. Has been a Prince fan since the mid 80's.If you want great guitar work check out the GOLD EXPERIENCE album. Might be out of print, but you can pick it up used om Amazon or ebay. His masterpiece, Sgt Pepper if you like, is SIGN O THE TIMES. That album is a must have, he never released anything better. The recent LOTUSFLOW3R had some cool guitars too. PARADE if you want some great rythm guitar tracks. CHAOS AND DISORDER has some rockin' tracks.I think there are some tracks on most of his albums that have great guitar solos and cool riffs and rythm parts. Either funky stuff or more rock oriented.
carfish7 Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 Overrated?!? As compared to what or whom? I don't think he gets ENOUGH credit really as a musician since most folks seem to focus on the man himself and his image and words, but he can definately play...... I have been digging "Musicology" lately although it isn't really " rock" focused per se. Find "Cinnamon Girl" or " A Million Days" off that one for the best rocking posture. In fact, hop on over to YouTube now and give a listen if you have a minute - see if you hear the Metal in the latter. Th real magic is in the live show, too, just in case you ever get the chance. Lots of guitar playing in that experience to be sure.
Bloozguy Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 "1999" is one of his classics. Other than some of the guitar work on "Little Red Corvette" done by Dez Dickerson, Prince played every instrument on the album.
atquinn Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 I'm a fairly casual Prince fan (like all the hits have a couple albums). I'd say he's greatly underrated. Most people that like him in a casual way have no idea what a monster all-around musician he is in terms of his own music, let alone how many hits he's made for other people.-Austin
Bennyboy-UK Posted December 6, 2012 Posted December 6, 2012 I don't think I could trust another human being who doesn't rate Prince.
Ting Ho Dung Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 I don't care for Prince as a whole. But I have spent some time on Youtube and sifted through the funk and horns and heard him playing some killer chops. And he is obviously talented and plays every instrument known to man. You are right, he could be killer in metal. I would have been a huge fan if he had gone that route. Funk and horns are not for me.
murkat Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 The guy is a monster, a true all around musician. He knows what He wants and does it.a modern man's Mark Bolin. I have a lot of respect for him. Prince Rocks, brings it to the table.
zorrow Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 She probably meant "underrated", because it's a fact the guy is a monster player. Now I'll have to do my homework with Prince, because I'm also in the "no more than Purple Rain and some few hits" bucket.Thank you for the suggestions!
carfish7 Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 "Fury" is another gem. I did discover that his peeps are pretty good at keeping his stuff off YouTube though...............
atquinn Posted December 7, 2012 Posted December 7, 2012 "Fury" is another gem. I did discover that his peeps are pretty good at keeping his stuff off YouTube though............... Ain't that the truth
Montelovesco Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 By the way, not a Hamer, but a 'Hohner TLE Prince' in his hands... Highly acclaimed Telecaster copy made in the South of Germany, out of production for a long time (or maybe being reissued), and much sought after...
mathman Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Love Prince!Well maybe not love... But really like! ;-)
