Daytona vibrato - How much can you pull up?

TobiTill

Question

Posted

Hi everybody,

For those that have a Daytona:

If you set up the vibrato to float, can you pull up enough to have the g-string go up a minor 3rd (to Bb) in pitch?

I remember Polara writing that he hardly has any room to pull up the way his Daytona is routed.

I'm considering buying a Daytona, but the possibility to set up the vibrato that way is a must for me.

I have asked this question before in different threads, but no answer so far...

So, I would appreciate some insight from the local Daytona - owners.

Pics are of course always welcome.

Any Daytonas in shell pink?

SFG will do as well....

Have a nice weekend, everyone!

Regards,

Tobias

As a general rule, you wanna stop before the arm breaks off.

I reckon if you set it up with the leading edge low and the tail edge up off the wood 1/8", you get more, but mine was tighter than my old '67 RI Fender. Maybe the Wilkie vibrato has a bigger block than Fenders, so hits the wood sooner?

Posted

Couldn't you bevel the leading edge of the block to gain clearance (as opposed to chiselling out some wood) as a way to get more backwards pull? I never use the trem on mine, so I don't know for sure - but it should be do-able with some relatively minor tweaks. Somebody out there probably makes a block with a bevel already on it.

I wouldn't not buy a Daytona (well, unless it was a hardtail....) thinking that it couldn't be (or hasn't been) done.

Thanks for the input, folks.

Since I need a lot of range I'm afraid that a beveled block won't suffice.

And I'd rather not chisel away at a Hamer.

I hope someone can chime in who has managed to get a good range.

In the meantime:

I don't angle the claw, though.

Have a nice sunday.

Mine it set up to with a nice range of float, although I have not checked to see just how much or if it is getting as much as you are asking for. I will try to put a tuner to it before the day is out and get back in here and let you know if it has the range you are looking for.

Thanks a lot in advance, G man,

I'm curious about the result.

A mighty fine Blitz you have there, I might add.

There are 2 colours that I really dislike in real life: Pink and light blue.

But strangely enough I'm certain I would buy a shell pink S-style guitar.

Your Blitz had me thinking about how great guitars can look.

I particularly like the 3+3 headstocks on some of the Blitzes.

I'm weird like that.

Can you raise the post up silly high or replace them, then shim the neck in an equivalently silly fashion to get a suitable angle of pitch so it's still playable?

Would that work a bit?

Hey Tobias,

Thanks for the Blitz comments, and yeah, for some reason I think the 3+3 headstock totally works on the Blitz, but again, I had it painted sonic blue, so what do I know.

Anyway, just checked the Daytona, I'm only making it from an open G string to an A# before the trem is decked, and I'm pretty happy with how it plays now, so I don't really want to mess with it to see if I could get it to pull more.

Still a kick ass strat though. I think there might be some 2 post conversion trems out there that will give you more range, but can't say for sure, so don't take my word for it.

+1.

I likes 'em too!

+2

I like the Hamer paddle headstock on Blitzes and Vectors.

Vectors- "committing crimes with both direction and magnitude! Oh Yeah!"

G man,

Thanks a lot for checking the range out for me.

It sounds like a Daytona can be set up the way I need it.

Looks like I'm going to make a decision this weekend.

Have a nice day everyone.

Shell Pink Daytona.

Now THAT would be something cool!

Day-TONE-ahs are made for the slight and slow mytic wiggle. Big dives and pull ups are for Diablos. I actually did own what was one of supposedly only two Daytonas with the stop tail. I traded it to get my beloved red trans Daytona back from Ted the Bluesbuster. The stop tail was cool, but Dayona calls for some wiggle.

What am I missing. Isn't A# Bb? Did you say you used a tuner? :P

My Daytona is set up to float at 3/32. With that I was able to obtain 1 step (G to A). I yanked out a spring which made the bridge float at 5/32. With that I was able to reach C (2 and a half steps?). When I yanked the spring the guitar went out of tune of course but I would guess that you could adjust one to float in tune at 5/32 which should give you somewhere in the neighborhood of what you are looking for. I've seen pictures of Jeff Becks bridge and it floats really really really high. I know his is a Fender but just saying you should be able to float a Daytona (with the stock Wilki) to 5/32.

Edit: Scratch all that. I just set mine up with the bridge floating to 5/32 in standard tuning. G went to Bb+ before decking out.

Hi Thorn,

Thanks for trying it out on your Daytona.

The next time you or G man are in the Netherlands, give me a call and I'll invite you to have some proper metric beers.

On your Daytona the G string goes up to Bb+ ?

What's Bb+? Do you have extra notes on your guitar? ;) If so, I have to get me one of those.

In any case, it doesn't look bad as far as the range is concerned.

The weekend will bring some news for me and then I'll see if I can buy one.

Thanks to everyone for chiming in.

Cheers,

Tobias

Quite close actually. Go to California, make a U-turn, cross the Atlantic, then from Spain on head straight north.

Alternatively you can take the scenic route (Pacific Ocean), it takes a bit longer, but they have good coffee in Turkey!

Unfortunately, I don't see myself crossing the big pond anytime soon, though I have been to the Netherlands a few times. And as good as the beer was, it was the stuff they carry in the coffee shops that interested me. Good luck on the Daytona, they are really great strats and you will not be disappointed if you do end up grabbing it.

They really do have good beer here - imported from Belgium or Germany of course
