Ting Ho Dung Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Love the tension and the break up. His solos remind me of old Big Brother And The Holding Company. Any of you Jerks heard of him before me? I caught this tune at the end of "Stand Up Guys" and spent an hour trying to find out who this was.
Ting Ho Dung Posted June 16, 2013 Author Posted June 16, 2013 Yup - what a super jerk, bordering on jerkoff... Sounds like we've come up with a new rating system.
bubs_42 Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Gary Clark JR, from Texas, friends with Doyle Bramhall II, played at Claptons Crossroads concert in 2010 and 2013, album launched Last October/November. BADASS album, with 60's, 70's fuzzy tones all over it layered with the Blues and R&B. You really can pin him into a corner. His has his own style and IMHO is really refreshing.
Ting Ho Dung Posted June 16, 2013 Author Posted June 16, 2013 I've been reading on his gear. Plays an Epi Casino through a Vibra King. Looked up Vibra King. Expensive!! I'll just have to turn up my Valve Jr till it blows the speaker.
Duplex Dave Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Yeah, he's pretty good. I saw him on Austin City Limits recently, try to catch that re-run it's from the latest season. Several styles combined, with many songs sounding very different.
Crwth145 Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 Sounds a lot like James Dewar, even a little like Trower on guitar... cool stuff!
G Man Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I grabbed his new disc a month or so ago, good stuff, for the most part.
stratacus Posted June 16, 2013 Posted June 16, 2013 I did stage security for Gary Clark Jr at the 2008 Roots N Blues festival in Columbia, MO. I had not heard of him before, but have been a fan ever since. Tab Benoit was playing the same stage immediately after, and halfway through Gary's set, Tab steps out of his tour bus and walks up to me and asks "Who is that guy?"...

Fender came out with that around 1997. It's PTP wired from their custom shop. Current ones are black tolex/silver cloth. You can find used ones in the original blonde/oxblood color scheme for around $1500-1999. Not pocket change, but not a bad price for a well-built all-tube PTP big combo. It has tube-driven tremolo and reverb with the full mix/dwell controls of the outboard units. Jonny Lang used one too.
marcnorth Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 He played at the R&R HOF for Albert Kings induction. He's good for sure. edit to add this:

dragan Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 vibra-king has been out since the 90s didnt know they still made them , modern take on the old 3-10 tweed bandmasters
JohnnyB Posted June 17, 2013 Posted June 17, 2013 So what's the difference between the Casino and the Newport? The Newport is a more nuanced instrument with a solid carved spruce top. Also, the body is routed mahogany, which is a warmer wood. The Casino body is all laminated maple, though some versions may have had some spruce in the top, but not enough to approach the sweetness and complexity of the Newport's clean tone. Played clean the Newport has an open and dynamic sound suggestive of an amplified acoustic guitar. The Casino is hollow body, but the laminated maple body gives it a more pronounced midrange and compresses the dynamics. The Casino is nice enough played clean, but comes alive with overdrive, and the fully hollow construction makes it easier (than a semihollow such as a 335) to get feedback. Also, there is a variety of pickups used in various editions of the Casino. I had Lindy Fralins in mine, which was artist stock formerly owned by Chris Ballew of Presidents of the United States of America. So I had a good example to play side-by-side with my Newport. It takes a seriously good pickup to match or beat the Newport's Phat Cat, which was designed and voiced for that guitar.
