Pedahl Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Hello, Need some help. A Swedish pawn shop is selling this Hamer USA, snakeskin, in an auction. Have searched the internet and found some information but I can't still identify it. #923108, looks like ebony fret board with some special inlays *M*AXX. Is it a special customer order? Maybe from some Swedish rocker who then needed some cash It's 600 km from me so I don't have any possibility to check it out before bidding. It comes with a hard case but no pictures of that so I don't know if it's original. What is the value? What is the text in the inlays meaning? Please help me with as much data as possible.
RichRS6 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Welcome to the forum. That looks an interesting find.My guess (and others will be along shortly who are more qualified) is it's a Custom order as there are no other inlays on the board so it would seem to have been done at the factory.O'Connor snakeskin graphic with a reverse headstock. It's giving me a lazy lob on.Buy it quick, I'm sure there will be a line forming behind you shortly. If you get it let me be the first to offer you the obligatory $350.00 for it.Edited to add: What it's worth is in the wallet of the beholder. If you're called M*axx it would be worth a whole lot more to you than it is to me.It's not in the best of condition (play wear is usually good though as it means it is/was a good player) and is missing some parts (2 back plates a knob) plus it may have had an extra switch added as one is a different colour from the others. This could just be replacement but there were a few different variations.Market value is whatever the seller can get for it I would be surprised if it went for less than £800.00 (Pounds of the realm). As I said there will be others along shortly who are far more knowledgeable than me.Good luck.
Steve Haynie Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 As Rich said, £800.00 might be the final auction price, but if you can get it for less go ahead and grab it.
Andrew Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 1989 Custom order Chaparral Custom: reverse headstock wasn't standard and the O'Connor paint-job was a big upcharge. The inlays would need checking that they are original but possibly are. The three switch arrangement was normal up to mid-87 after which the 5-way was used. This coincided with the change from 24.75 to 25.5 inch scale-length. They may have used an older body or made one to order so this one could be 24.75 or 25.5 inch scale.
Pedahl Posted June 24, 2013 Author Posted June 24, 2013 Thank you very much for your help so far! Well, it seems that it is one-of-a-kind anyway. Sorry, but my name is not MAXX, at least not yet..... Is it possible to get spare parts like the trem arm? When I make a zoom at the picture it looks like the tremolo is marked HAMER. Is that a Floyd Rose or a Khaler and what type? Matching switch and knob I suppose is easier to find.
RichRS6 Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Standard Floyd ams afaik.Has anyone checked the serial number database to find out who it was made for.
murkat Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 If you like Hamers.Buy it.simple as that. One of a kind.Serious history right there.Oh, if that guitar could speek,a many tales it would tell.
specialk Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 ^What he said. If you can swing the price without it hurting you, do it!Welcome and best of luck.
dragan Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 searched axx theres a band called axx . all the members are using the last name axx( like the ramones ) ? no "m" though?... maybe he quit or ?
Jem Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Is it possible to get spare parts like the trem arm? When I make a zoom at the picture it looks like the tremolo is marked HAMER. Is that a Floyd Rose or a Khaler and what type?Schaller Floyd, as stated, same as they produce today and easily available. Also they stopped bolting the locknut from the back and started screwing it from the front when they changed from OFR to Schaller so you should have no neck issues (breaks) at all.
coolfeel Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 Fuck the Floyd, when you get it rip the Floyd out and just mount a Kahler over the rout. It will be almost as cool as the yellow refin Chappy someone PSAd in the For Sale section...
singlehum Posted June 24, 2013 Posted June 24, 2013 I think it was Magnus' guitar...er...axe.,,or axx.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swedish_EroticaGuitar is in this video..http://www.spirit-of-metal.com/video/video_read.php?id_groupe=42228&id_video=58382Could that that "diver down" graphic Firebird be a Hamer?
cmatthes Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 The bass is indeed a Hamer FBIV, and I'd like to get a better look at the second guitar in there - either a blue graphic single pickup Chap Custom or Cali with a reverse, matching headstock, and the third (additional) Hamer is another custom Chapparal in either a Dragonskin or Leopardskin graphic - different than the Snakeskin graphic that Magnus slings for most of the video. Some nifty detective work there, Singlehum!
RichRS6 Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 This kind of attention to details you will only get here. The guys that built it will be along to let you know what they had for dinner the day it rolled out of the factory next.Pedahl, if it gets too steep for you let us know where it's for sale so one of us can take a punt at it.
singlehum Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 It's cool when these kinds of things turn up. This would be a good one for the second Hamer book...!Good call on the other guitars in the video, CMatthes. I wonder where those are now? I think Magnus has a Facebook page - it would be cool to get the story from him.
Ting Ho Dung Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 I believe the guitar makes a showing @ 52 seconds.
Ting Ho Dung Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 Never mind. I see someone beat me to it. I'm going back to bed now.
Pedahl Posted June 25, 2013 Author Posted June 25, 2013 Wow!You are super detectives. Really interesting to get the history.Of course I will now do whatever I manage to grab it! (will not tell my wife...)If not, I will help track it, if possible.
RichRS6 Posted June 25, 2013 Posted June 25, 2013 If Carlsberg had a forum it wouldn't be as good as this one.
Disturber Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 Here is the guitar auction. The site is owned by Ebay, so it's basically the same thing. However I don't think you can log in with your ebay ID.http://www.tradera.com/elgitarr-hamer-ormskinnsmotiv-239-318--auktion_301965_185082063They don't ship outside of the Nordic territory, (Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland and Iceland). However, if someone really wants this guitar I might be able to assist. Send me a PM if you want me to bid for you and arrange shipment. If you are a trustworthy HFC'er, then I could perhaps be convinced to help out. It's up at 5 000 Kronor now, a bit over 700 US dollars I think. It will most probably need a pro set up, perhaps a dressing of the frets, (maybe a re-fret who knows..) A new back plate etc.So ad at least 300 dollars to the sale price to have it fixed. Ha, ha. That singer in Swedish Erotica, I know the guy. Didn't know he'd been in this band. I don't think he's using that in his CV. The late 80's, lol. Reminds me of Cherry Pie.
coolfeel Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 If it was 25.5 scale I would probably be interested, although I am not sure how I feel about the inlays...
Disturber Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 If it was 25.5 scale I would probably be interested, although I am not sure how I feel about the inlays... You can always remove them by putting in identical ebony inlays (I guess, Murkat or Greg would now if it's possible).
Pedahl Posted June 26, 2013 Author Posted June 26, 2013 Of course you would find it... It seems there are some more interested bidders...... Hamer is not a well known brand here in Sweden. Can't remember if I have ever seen any USA made for sale. There are some XT for sale on sites and they are very cheap, around 200-250 USD. Think it will be hard to ever get money back on this guitar in Sweden if price increase much more. Of course that is not the interest for the bidders I think, it's the history and that it is unique (and hopefully a piece of quality craftsmanship)
RichRS6 Posted June 26, 2013 Posted June 26, 2013 I love it but I'm not bidding.IMO you found it and came here for advice not so we can push the price out of your reach, unless you're the seller looking to get a few more bids in ?????Others may see it differently and this is always the danger of putting a "I found this cool guitar what is it and how much should I pay" thread in a forum full of Hamer hungry nut jobs.Plus I'm not worthy of a shred monster like that and already have 2 Floyd equipped guitars than I rarely use..Good luck to whoever grabs it.
