sixesandsevens Posted August 7, 2013 Author Posted August 7, 2013 It is a nice '97. We're working out the shipping details now. Edit: And on that note, does anyone know how well a '97 Standard would fit into a Coffin explorer case?
cmatthes Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 I'd put it in a Hamer import Standard case before I'd put it in one of those.
sixesandsevens Posted August 7, 2013 Author Posted August 7, 2013 I'd put it in a Hamer import Standard case before I'd put it in one of those. We're weighing a bunch of options, that one just happens to be readily available near him (he's outside the lower 48). I'm really trying to avoid buying and shipping a case to him first, though I do have a line on a universal TKL explorer case locally. How do you all feel about shipping without a case by double-boxing it? From what I've read it sounds like that means:prep the guitar (depending on who you are, that's loosening the strings or not, and maybe a slice of bubble wrap between the strings and fretboard) newspaper around the guitar wrap it in bubble wrap box it surrounded by newspaper or more bubble wrap so that the guitar is immobilized in the inner box wrap THAT box in bubble wrap to immobilize it and then box it for shippingI'm sort of a guitar-shipping newbie, so I'm not really sure what's "enough".
hamerhead Posted August 7, 2013 Posted August 7, 2013 If you can box it to withstand a 20-foot drop on the headstock end, you might be OK without a case.I still wouldn't do it.
Never2Late Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 If you can box it to withstand a 20-foot drop on the headstock end, you might be OK without a case.I still wouldn't do it.This.I had a guitar shipped to me that only had a soft-case. There was about 6 inches of bubble-wrap in every direction around this guitar before it was wrapped in layers of cardboard as a 'box'. It took several minutes to cut the guitar ot ouf this stuff, but the guitar arrived mint and was still in-tune.....and this was for a $500 'import' guitar. Not a rare USA-made Hamer Standard - I'd put that sucker in an armored Flight case, THEN box it with peanuts and bubblewrap. Its not like Jol is making more of them.....

cmatthes Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Its not like Jol is making more of them..... Actually, he never made them!
Bobby Marshall Posted August 8, 2013 Posted August 8, 2013 Its not like Jol is making more of them..... Actually, he never made them! I gotta read the book again. I mistakenly thought Monty cut the lumber and both Paul and Jol did assembly, painting, etc. must have been only Paul. Damn. I better study up for the pop quiz.

I meant, he never made the mahogany Standards in Arlington Hts or New Hartford.
sixesandsevens Posted August 12, 2013 Author Posted August 12, 2013 Did anyone nail that Hog Standard or not?If you mean the black one, I'm working on it, but we're still working out the delivery.

Find a MF brand hsc that will fit, have the seller order it. MF will ship for free so you don't get stuck with shipping both ways.Won't be a Hamer case, but safe shipping container and a box too.edit:GC ships free to AK too, but not as easy to deal with as MF.
Hbom Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 ^ ^ ^ Great idea! Actually I feel a bit sleazy when I do stuff like this, but 30+ years of living where shipping can be difficult, has led me to a life of devious behavior.

I agree that it's a good idea and it's part of the reason I opened that thread asking which cases will fit a standard. I'm glad to hear that MF will ship free up there. I'd spec'ed out an order with a few others and AK, HI, et al. were excluded from free shipping, so I'm shocked and pleased that they offer free shipping up there. Actually I feel a bit sleazy when I do stuff like this, but 30+ years of living where shipping can be difficult, has led me to a life of devious behavior. I don't think it's sleazy... "Dude, buy a case to ship it in and add it to the price" hardly seems like an issue. Now if I ordered it, had it shipped to him for free, had him ship the guitar to me in it, and then I returned it after the guitar arrived gets into some gray areas. Who's your shipper of choice when shipping to "the lower 48"?
Hbom Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 I don't think they will ship it for free IF YOU ORDER IT. He will have to order it and they will ship UPS free to him.I usually ship USPS priority. The others are way too expensive unless you have a large account with them. (Like MF & GC)
hamerhead Posted August 12, 2013 Posted August 12, 2013 Not sleazy at all. They sell a case and ship it. Happens every day.
