tomjoyce Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 Frankly, I have no idea what to get. I hate buying amps, and dread jumping back intom the market. I am getting rid of an awesome Mesa F-50; love it, but I just can't use that much horsepower. I need something between single digits and say 25W. I play classic hard rock and blues; from rory gallagher, to zeppelin, cream, trower, mountain, all the way to schenker, judas priest and iron maiden. F-50 is damn close to perfect, but is too loud and a bit too much gain and buzz on the lead channel.Looking for a replacement if somebody has something worth buying or suggestions. Also, I am not looking for a twenty thousand dollar boutique wet dream, just a reasonable good sounding amp for knocking about with.
Guest pirateflynn Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 Hey Tom,I would give this Savage Macht 6 a look. I'm fighting the urge to buy it myself.http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...me=STRK:MEWA:IT
mattb Posted November 14, 2005 Posted November 14, 2005 I have a Rivera Pubster that is great for practicing at home. The big guns stay at the studio. Check one out.

currypowder Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 A little more expensive than some of the other suggestions, but I've been real happy with my Maven Peal Zeeta. It's a variable wattage (0.5 - 20) amp. It's been discontinued and replaced with a Double Zeeta. It's variable wattage goes from 1 - 44 and has two channels. Info is here:Double ZeetaGreg
ZR Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 I'm leaning more and more towards selling my Valvetech amp which would be just right for what you need. 22 watts, tube-driven fx loop and tube-driven reverb options, aluminum footswitch option (instead of plastic) for reverb and 2nd channel gain boost, 4 12ax7's, 2 6v6's and a rectifier tube, 12ax7/12aT7 switch, pentode / triode switch (full and half power), 1x12" combo in purple Marshall levant tolex with black grill and gold piping, Italian Jensen speaker, cream chicken head knobs and all the mods he has put out to improve the amp. This Zinky MOFO head I got recently has put my amp world into a tailspin lately! I'm just not sure if I can part with an amp this good. The clean especially is very nice and will be hard for me to top. The distortions rock and...there I go again! talking myself into and out of selling this amp for the past 2 weeks! I do need the money though so we'll see. I'll keep you guys posted.

Just a killer sounding compact setup, and great for recording. Unfortunately I need to unload it for my impending home downsize. Let me know if you are interested.-Jonathan
Kilroy is all about... Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 I have a 15-watt, class A, new JJ tubes line-up (5-12ax7, 2-EL84, and a NOS rectifer tube) and Mark Sampson era BAD CAT CUB 15R with foot pedal (for the reverb). It hits the sweet cleans, fender-style and mean, gainy overdrive when 'dimed' out and all of the tones within those extremes. Huge resell value on the bouque amp market. currently, i'm playing Riveras (got one from Rick Nielsen ), so this maybe available, but it's not cheap. purchased this from bobbymack last year and it's not getting play (just increasing value on the mark sampson vibe). kilroy posts... $1.4k shipped w/in u.s.a. rgkilroy@yahoo.com rgkilroy@dmv.state.nv.us i, also, have a mint BAD CAT (Sampson era & has Matchless caps w/in) 2-tone pedal for better cleans, harsher overdrive with gain (loaded with either telefunkens or mullard 12AX7 or 12AT7) with true bypass. $175

My old Lightning embarrased some 50 watters in it's day. You won't have any trouble selling it, it looks clean as can be. Ken
Guest galejt Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Buy this TM60http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6276
tomjoyce Posted November 15, 2005 Author Posted November 15, 2005 cool, thanks all, that savage looks too cool for school; may take a run at it. The bad cat might still be a bit too loud for what I want, I have played them before and they are killer.
tomteriffic Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 I was checking out that Savage too. Somehow, a little, baby-blue amp that says 'Savage' on the front strikes me funny. I'd hit it.
jimirob2 Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 My Webpage Check this little amp out.I have one and can't be happier.Great bang for the buck!!
Guest galejt Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 Seriously. Buy THIS amp:http://thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?threadid=112460
El Kabong Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 The Savage has one of the finest cleans that you will ever have the pleasure of playing. It is also extremely low gain. You will need an OD pedal. The Macht 6 is also the loudest 6 watts that you will ever hear.
JohnnyThunders Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 Seriously. Buy THIS amp:http://thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?threadid=112460 Oh my I bet that thing can peel wallpaper off the wall. Traynor was my fav amp back in the 70's but goo were they loud!El is right the Savage is clean clean clean. You want dirty gritty get either a Cornford Harelequin (6 watts) around 1g used but I like to play low when people are in the house and crank it when they are gone so 6watts is a little low. But if you want darker gritty dostortion that the amp. Best comprimise is the Aiken Tomcat (12 watts) around 1.3-1.6or a Aiken Invader (18 watts discontinued) with the built -in attenuator. Or try the Reeves 18 watts marshally or 30 watts Hiwatty sound in the 1.3-1.6 with the Power Scalling which supposedly let's you go low. I haven't tried them up next on the Gas Attach probably the 30 Hi-watt one. Just tried a Maven Peal Tusk (50 watts) but has variable wattage 1>50 and wow it was really big and really plexi but was more for fine tuning playing out then low wattage bedroom/basement fun. But man it had a huge sound but it is going back just not quite enough grit and gain for me. Would be perfect for playing out.
Brooks Posted November 17, 2005 Posted November 17, 2005 carr mercury is also cool, 8 very loud watts that can be dialed down to 1/10w, steve/phoenix had one that i played thru and lusted after.http://www.carramps.com/mercury.html
