Question

OK, so I bought a personal "dream guitar" a Gibsom J-200. I have had it about 4payments worth :) and this winter I have humidified it(oasis humidifier in the case), the finish has gotten soft. my house humidity is @35%, if I leave it out, I can see it dry out, but if I put it in the case with my humidifier the finish gets soft, ie: capo leaving marks and sticking,

what gives?

What kind of padding is on the capo, if any?  Have you tried a different type of capo?  Some substances (like vinyl) react with Gibson's  nitrocelluose finishes...badly.    Same thing goes for whatever is on the guitar stand that you use, if you use one.  I've never heard of humidity being a factor in making a nitro finish soft, though.  Maybe if moisture gets under a finish...but then, it'd start looking like it's got 'Hameritis', I'd think.

If it is brand new, you purchased new. it could be still de gassing, keeping it locked in the case is not helping it. The capo, as mentioned prior, could have vinyl, silicon properties, which always wrecks havoc on a Gibson finish.

Bought new? warranty (good luck with that).

No warranty? air it out. New capo is in order.

Ok,

Capo-s are planet waves/ns.  If I leave it on for more than 10min it is a noticeable mark, I have left the capo on the headstock for an afternoon a couple times and those will have to be buffed out (someday)

I did some poking online and read the glue in the case could be gassing out and softening the finish. I'll try just leaving the case out in the sun and airing it out. The temperature is going up and the heater is running less and less. So I'm less worried about the humidity. No pets, my girls will leave it alone if I leave it out (too big for 'me anyway)

Honestly, I didn't but it for any investment, and I'm playing the sh!t out of it, I just didn't expect it to be looking so rough so soon.

Dissappointing :(

Since Hamer was born of Gibson frustrations, we'd have to ask, what were you expecting?  I like many others have a Gibson horror story in our lives, my excuse was, it was pre-internet, so I didn't know or have access to their reputation.

sure, and after playing @ 17 different J-200's I found one I would actually pay for. Plays great, sounds great. 1 of 17  gotta get one right now and then, right? I do have to admit, most felt crappy, or had bad fretwork, or even sloppy seams. A couple sounded like they were made of ply-wood, but I like mine.

There's better capos out there.

Air it all out.

Put a fan, moving air on that case.

cotton cloth the contact points of guitar / stand. In years to come in the near distant future, all will be fine.

Also watch for that rubber surgical tubing that's used on some capos, and as padding on stands and hangers. Several years ago I found a 1986 G&L bass in near new condition for a great price in a pawn shop. I couldn't buy it at the time, but when I went back for it a few months later the rubber on the wall hanger had eaten away the finish at the contact points where the neck meets the headstock. For $190 I bought it anyway. :D

I purchased an "open box" Gibson SG Standard that I had for a few years. It definitely had a lot more grain visible in the texture of the finish when I sold it than it did new. It also felt a lot less "sticky" to my hands. New Gibson guitars really need to be aired out, and the same could be said for new guitar cases. I'm sure after a year or two the finish will solidify, as others have said.

The cap is putting a lot of constant pressure on one point, so just that could be leading to the finish/wood denting in a little.

This is late to the party, but the first thought was that leaving the guitar out of the case might help.  Summer is not too far away.  You might want to leave the case open in sunlight a few days.

Yup, just let it air out.  I suppose it's nice to see that some things never change @ Gibson. My first "good" electric guitar, an SG Junior, had spent the first year or so of its life in air-conditioned comfort at Mel Bay's store.  I took it home in late summer to an non air-conditioned house, in St. Louis and proceeded to stick to the finish pretty much constantly if the weather was warm for a couple of years after that. It eventually settled down, but about the time it did I moved on to a Firebird that was already several years old and it was fine. Same city, same living conditions.

Regarding capos in general, I bought a Martin from a guy that had a little dent in the back of the neck, he said it was from leaving a capo on it for too long.

Just googled the J200..sweet looking guitar, like $4k new. Amazing you saw that many bad examples. How did you even find so many to try? Good luck, hope it gets resolved.

The only capo I have ever purchased is shubb.  I have used other brands and none works as well for me.  And they have Verizon for thick necks, 7.25 radius, and flat radius, among others.  All work great.  YMMV.

Sorry to hear about the finish woes.  If anyone knows how to remedy it is Murkat.  He was one of their in house masters.

How did I find so many? I live in DALLAS ;)

Gibson had a truckload of j-200's at the Arlington guitar show. @10 to be exact. There were 2 at Sam Ash, and 5 guitar centers between here and WI. Then I had one sent from sweetwater, and it was a winner. It even had issues with the electronics and the setup was aweful. It sounded great, and had a great neck. I fixed the pickup and gave it a good setup, now it's the best I have played.
