Got "NO" from Hamer

I have been disappointed time and time again over the years....I could get up on the soap box and cry all day...but what good will it do ?

no firebird,

no sunburst with standard headstock,

no polka dot standard,

no polka dot vector.

no houndstooth pattern graphic

no cracked dayglo.

no aquaburst

no single hum sunburst with sustain block

lets not mention how many times we've all asked for a faithfull enola replica. [ok rick we understand ]

I used to get really pissed , being an oldschooler and hamer once having the "we have to make it " philosophy ,

then figured...hey ....things change....I'll just need to keep thinking of something new till they say yes again.

they really didnt wanna do my korina standard with a spalted top, but its thankfully happening...

"so I am ecstatic to be getting something out of the norm".

we'll see if my monaco idea is a possibilty...

thumbnail inlays, filtertrons....it might be too gretsch for them?...

I would love to see a run of sustain blocked firebirds....

w/bound ultimate grade flametop body with raised center block over korina , bound neck & head, crown inlays,

I dont care what headstock they use.. the old chap head or the new standard head shape.. who cares...

and of course a single hum w/NO pickgaurd !!!!

now that would be a guitar for the ages !!!!

what would it be worth for them to do a run of 30+ ?

and would it really be a big pain in the a$$ ?

I am sure with all the bird fans on the hamer front theyd sell like hot cakes.

not to mention all the jackson bird fans now being shot down after fender bought them due to the gibson body non compete clause..... OR further with GMP's demise...

they could sell a ton of birds.... theyre a very very hot body style at this time.

where theres a will theres a way.... elduave lets get on this one !!!! !!!!

now that I am buying "new" hamers for the first time in a long time.

I could see spending for 2 birds..... I hope this new hamer love affair isnt short lived I've been having fun of late...

meantime I'll suffer with my jackson firebirds !

"Jol took this as some sort of cosmic irony and came to peace with his past. However, he likened the continual requests to rehash the past as asking Porsche to remake a 1974 911 (or some such vintage). While it's a great car, and Porsche may rightfully be proud of it, it's not reasonable to ask for it to be built again. They've moved on with newer designs and are satisfied with the direction they are going."

Think about all of the new retro cars. PT Cruiser, Thunderbird, etc.....

Jol regrets many of his 80's guitars?!?!?!?! These regrets are the reasons why as a teen, I drooled over these fabulous guitars. Hamer can send me any of their 'regrets'.

Charvel will still build anything in this vein, with no regets and and embraces the proud history of their name. A guitar company should be wise enough to understand that as adults, we can recapture some of our youth with the products that were so out of reach at the time of their heyday.

I too, really enjoy this board, but count me in as another who is now Hamerless, but still thinks this board is one of the best on-line, within the guitar niche.

I agree with elkabong....

and for now I am very happy with the guitars hamer is willing to build me and dont wanna make waves.....

I cant thank jol enough for everything I have gotten out of this product line over the years....

BUT charvel is making stratheads this year.. who ever thought that would happen again.. ?

sure you'll pay the upcharge...but this is a step in the right direction...

they'll definately get some of my money after the naam unveilings.

sure they wont be late '70s eary '80s guitars , but they are finally making a huge effort to replicate them in "great detail" .

anything goes, you dream it, they will make it....its always been that way.

I honestly can understand jol not wanting to beat the same ole same ole...

he's been there & done that....

I am sure he wants to stay interested in his work and move forward.

30 years is a long time to try to keep abreast of trends.

but to hear be may be ashamed of some of his "original" body designs kinda saddens me some .

phantom, scarab ,scepter, virtuoso,? and my fave hamer, the proto1 ?

absolutely NO disrespect intended , until you walk a day in another mans shoes you cant judge....

but, I personally would be more ashamed of reworking the l.p. jr over and over ,

long before my original designs.....

so meantime while hamer is trying to sell the 30-50 age group on new ideas... why not cash in on what your core audience is asking for..?

nobody says they gotta do it forever . even a limited run

[which I have never been a fan of]

can keep up the core interest, while developing the next generation of cool guitars.

" I liken it to going to a concert, and your favorite band is playing all their new songs and none of the old ones you came for.. .

you love 'em and wish only the best for them.....but eventually you stop paying to see them..."

I have to say I'm pumped that they said "YES" to most of what I wanted on my custom. But I have to say what I was after was in line with the whole modern-vintage thing... FWIW they did say no to a special string thru bridge I drew up and my first ideas for inlay, but then the boomers returned with a YES and they agreed to find this crazy maple pattern I requested. Definitely have to admit that I'd be major ticked if they had said NO and then some time later it shows up elsewhere.

Here's our boy Kiz setting up the shot above, laying his dirty mitts on his clean Bird...

Might have considered one of those 'birds, if they didn't have that fugly GMP headstock. It's so WRONG on those guitars. Hey, at least First Act is using a proper FB headstock on theirs.

Have you seen the prices on REAL firebirds lately? It's insane!

Oh, by the way... this thread was actually getting interesting for a while, I'm proud of you guys!

Hey Elduave, what the heck is that Levon Helm nonsense anyway? I felt like I'd fallen into a paralell universe.

I forgot to mention that I attended one of the Hamer clinics last year, and Jol spoke quite proudly of the old models. He seemed convinced that they were great instruments, but not a great direction for the company... there's a difference I suppose.

Fred

PS speaking of bad direction... what happened to GMP anyway?

That was just me being inside/cryptic. Jol called yesterday disguising his voice as Levon Helm. I thought my chain was getting yanked...

Yes Dave, Hamer is making retro reinterpretations of classic Gibson-esque designs. And that's what all those cars are - retro reinterpretations of classic American cars. But they are NEW thoroughly modern cars and NOT exact copies of the originals. Not even close by a longshot.

To those that are surprised, this is exactly what Jol told us a couple years ago. His presentation at the 2003 open house was the highlight of all the open houses I've attended (4 in total). Perhaps the Porsche analogy isn't perfect, but when he said it I understood what he meant. You can honor the past but sometimes you have to move on and accept that the past is gone.
