Cboss Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 "Expertly aged"... I would LOVE to read their internal breakdown on the customer this is targeted to
RobB Posted April 4, 2023 Author Posted April 4, 2023 I'd wager more than half of this, "limited run of 200", are going to Metallicollectorz who don't play guitar, but will drop $15k-plus to own a chunka Kirky. Maybe Gibson can get him to lick the knobs and tuners for that extra bit of authenticity?
Disturber Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 I have nothing against Kirk. He paid his dues. But these "ltd" releases from Gibson are just a joke. Their number for the ltd series are always around 200-300 guitars. They base the "limited" number upon how many items they can sell on their market. They know that they will sell 200 copies of this guitar. So they set the "limited" number to what the bottom line of the Excel-chart says. As every major Kirk fan will buy the guitar, it is not really limited. As there is product for everyone who could possibly be interested in buying said item. If Gibson would only build a fifth (or a tenth) of the market demand for the product, then it would be a limited item for real.
Dave Scepter Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 I love Metallica, being born and raised in the Bay area, I became a fan early on, saw them perform quite often... I had a black 79 Gibson V many moons ago that I bought for $500... loved that guitar... even snapped the headstock off then had it repaired with splints... can't remember if I sold or traded it but miss it and often wonder what happened to it? 🤔

rickrock999 Posted April 7, 2023 Posted April 7, 2023 I bought an ESP LTD KH-602 Kirk Hammett Natural Ouija. It was a limited run of 666. Mine was number 77 bought in as new condition for $1500 I sold it a couple of years later for $2700. Just sayin' Not mine but you get the idea.
RobB Posted April 8, 2023 Author Posted April 8, 2023 If Gibson did a proper RI of a ‘79 V, then they’d be on to something: Small, blunted headstock with volute and Klusons with metal crown buttons Chome-cover T-Tops (no pickup rings) Witch-hat Knobs Black, Vintage White, Natural, Cherry, Silverburst and Sunburst finishes. I really dig my ‘22 “70s Ebony V.” Well-made, great fretwork and plays easy, but it’s not really a, “70s” model. My Japan-market, ‘15 V has that vintage-vibe/construction, though they still didn’t get the headstock quite right.
topekatj Posted April 8, 2023 Posted April 8, 2023 Speaking of overpriced Gibsons with Kirk’s seal of approval: there’s the Peter Green>Gary Moore>Kurk Murphy aged LP STD, complete with a simulated headstock repair — $50 K! But it did include a meet ‘n’ greet with Wahwah Hammett hisself
