Hamer Brand Loyalty
Brooks replied to Nathan of Brainfertilizer Fame's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
i grew up mostly on fenders and gibsons (3 each). i'm 100% hamer usa right now (3, all used, but have owned close to 25). they are the best bang for the buck and the most consistant quality. that said, in the last 5 years i have also bought (and sold) dean/kramer/washburn/ibanez/g&l; the only one that came close was jeffro's g&l (it was better than 90% of the hamers i've owned, but i'm not a strat guy). -

Hamer Brand Loyalty

found out last night that brian (trombonist from my original band) is moving to TN, and that i'm inheriting his short scale bass & behrringer amp. so my tally now is 3 usa hamers and an import slammer bass, no other brands. -

2nd to last acoustic gig before Dave moves to VA and we're done. Been 7 years (and 2 years playing every week at Grey's, who have been very good to us).

Wayne Krantz' last cd was issued by a company in Cary (SW Raleigh) NC called Abstract Logix, they issue a bunch of fusion/neo-jazz cd's. I just got an email from them, and almost shit; Abstract Logix Music Festival 2010 We Specialize in Serious Parties !! Raleigh, North Carolina, Lincoln Theater, November 20, 21 More Details Real Soon Initial Lineup: John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, Lenny White, Jimmy Herring, Wayne Krantz, Alex Machacek Trio, Human Element with Scott Kinsey, Matt Garrison, Gary Novak and Arto Tuncboyaciyan and many special Guests Wow! I'm so there. Big Krantz fan, flew to NYC on my 40th a few years back to see him. Jimmy Herring is also amazing (and from Fayetteville, NC). http://www.abstractlogix.com/

Self-titled EP (four tracks), independently released back in 1983. I remember being blown-away back then when this aired on 105.5 KNAC in the L.A. area... Queensryche - Queen of the Reich ha! we used to play that tune. played a bunch from this thread, plus some borderline cheese; van halen, maiden, priest, metallica, anthrax, megadeth, wasp, manowar, twisted sister, crue...
-
yep. mentioning kings x in a metal thread is like mentioning zep; yes they're heavy, but there's so much more going on than just thumping riffs...
-
well, seems you already have a lot of the classic metal i was gonna recommend. imho, the best pantera is their "best of" comp, same w/ MSG, & judas priest. some bands best collection is live; kiss "alive!", motorhead "no sleep til hammersmith", thin lizzy "live and dangerous". kings x are kinda metal at times, their heaviest and one of their best is "dogman". riot was more early 80's hard rawk, check out "fire down under". tool's 2nd & 3rd albums, "undertow" & "aeinma" are their best. much like some grunge (a.i.c., soundgarden), i like some of the stoner rock stuff because it sounds like early sabs; kyuss - sky valley & circus left town, c.o.c. - deliverence, in the arms of god, clutch - robot hive, pure rock fury, and lotsa scott "wino" winerich's bands albums; the obsessed - the church within, spirit caravan - the last embrace, hidden hand - divine propaganda, wino - punctured equlibrium. if you like rage against the machine, check out downset's self titled album. as for bands from the last 10 or so years, my fave album is the last mastodon album "crack the skye", it's missing the screamed vocals on their earlier albums, plus it's got more of a 70's prog metal vibe. also, disturbed have some cool pantera-ish riffs but w/ singing, i have a few tunes from "the sickness", "indestructable", & "ten thousand fists". after all those, i can only get into a song or two from some other metal bands...

WHEN'S JAZZFEST?
-
whoa! really!? i LOVE alex's whammy work. the solos in limelight & yyz should be required listening for anyone w/ a whammy.

2112 is the most metal rush album, i love it. hemispheres, permanent waves, and moving pictures was their peak, a combo of the angst and chops of their early stuff and more tuneful songwriting. plus geddy brought the vocal pitches down a little. i am having a blast working on my rush tribute project.

Floyd tribute in Teaneck, NJ, Friday 9pm
Brooks replied to burningyen's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
sounds good ben! is that the digitech & tech21 engine? maybe when we get our shit together my rush tribute could open for y'all... someday. ahh, hate to waste a trip to NYC on my gig! -
Krantz Carlock Lefebrve - except for one of the 2 or 3 vocal tunes, easily wayne krantz' best album yet. Steely Dan - live stuff from '96 w/ wayne krantz on guitar, nice to hear him play in a traditional setting. Mastodon - i've been diggin' the latest "crack the skye" so much that i've started re-listening to "leviathan" & "blood mountian" even tho i don't like the hardcore vocals. their riffs and arrangements are sick. Slipknot - i remember lecturing my nephew 5 years ago about how these guys were all gimick. well, they've added rippin' solos and strong melodic vocals on their last 2 albums, gawd help me i've downloaded 5 or 6 newer tunes that really rawk. the Bad Plus - been re-listening to their 1st 3 albums, and downloaded a few from "for all i care" w/ wendy lewis on vocals (great versions of yes' "long distance runaround", and zep's "immigrant song"). cool jazz piano/standup bass/drums trio.
