Discussion - Worst Sounding Amp You've Ever Owned...
woodpile replied to coolfeel's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Forget who made em but they were covered in tucked and rolled metal flaked vinyl kinda like a cheesy car interior. If I remember right, the cabinets were unusually skinny and tall. Always sounded like you were playing through some sort of instant signal decay pedal. -
Lesser know band that you love
woodpile replied to hikarateboy's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
This band may be more like never than lesser known. Floyd Radford was the guitarist. They kicked butt. Imo, damn near as good as anyone in 1971. -
Show yourself playing guitar without a band behind you.

Carvin Guitars--what's the REAL story?
woodpile replied to Thundersteel's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Seen and played a bunch of Carvins. They were nice lookers but kind of machiney (?) feeling. My guess is Carvin might not have enough real "guitarhead" craftsman running the CNC machines and sanders. Their same guys could probably make a pretty nice flame maple rocking chair with a few CNC tweaques. And why not, they already make too much other stuff. Imo, higher end guitars need real, put your stink on it, guitarhead craftsmen in the mix. -
I was possibly way into Grand Funk and the Doobie Brothers. May even have had the posters but I'll never admit that. Before them I might have been into Tommy James and Shondells but I'd never admit that either.

Which one do you wind up playing most? Is the plastic back an Ovation?

That Taylor is beautiful. The ones I've played have always been "crispy" sounding if that makes sense. Nice bell like ring but not what I'm after. I remember playing a Takamine that a friend of mine had that was very balanced in tone. It was painted black so I have no idea what it was. Another good one was a Tacoma rosewood with a spruce top but I see they tend to have finish problems. There's tons of old Japanese acoustics from Aria, Ventura, Yamaha, Ibanez, etc, out there. Anybody know anything about those?

I'm looking for an acoustic with a nice well rounded tone. How do you boxers describe the different tones between top and body wood. I'm more interested in solid wood bodies (tops, sides & backs). My take is that spruce is brighter, cedar is darker, mahogany is more low end, rosewood more midrange and maple more high end of the tone range. I have a Koa Yairi with a spruce top and laminate sides and back that is in the midrangey high zone. It might be the one but I'm jonesing for something better.

Ronnie Montrose RIP (1947-2012)

Depressing...M1 always makes my top 5 whenever I stop to think about it. Like HHB said, I remember chasing those licks and that sound all through the 70's. -

Holy gold standard! What, when, where, how, if.....?? -
covers that are way better than the originals
woodpile replied to DaveL's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Cream's Crossroads SNL's / Don't Fear the Reaper . -
I've got a MB Lonestar Special that has a 5, 15 & 30W setting. The 5W setting alone could get close to all your needs. Seems used ones would be in your price range.

Where's the serious metal with decent vocals?
woodpile replied to Jack C's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
How bout Black Label Society ZW's vocals are pretty close to JH's. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMDnUrs8knA...feature=related -
This was a local band around here in the '70s. Floyd Radford is on guitar.

Nice acoustic for around $1500-$2000?
woodpile replied to sonic1974's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Check out a Yairi DY62C if you get a chance. Definitely a desert island guitar for me. Killer with or without the electronics. -
