Still feeling the love for tubes

I was thinking about the OPO but don't think my finances will let me go there this year. Considered the PS3, which my son would love, but don't want to have to shell out for a new AV receiver... any thoughts on the LG BD-390? I'm liking the fact that it has the wireless access to Netflix, etc. but looking at reviews on Amazon it seems people either love it or hate it... Also do you think that the release of the OPO-83SE will bring the price of the regular model down? Thanks

I have a Lil 59 available for $45 shipped I just put a Harmonic Design Super 90 in the bridge of my Strat and LOVE IT!! Great full, meaty and can be pushed to downright nasty tone. AND relatively no noise (the biggest surprise!), check it out. -
SON OF A.... I left work with 30 minutes to go in the auction, was the leader in the clubhouse at $1,025 and had a bid in for up to 1100 must've got sniped right at the buzzer. Damn! I've been wanting one of those for a while, wonder if I'd have gone to 1150 if I'd be the winner now... Looked like a really nice one piece body - Oh well guess another one will come along sometime. Curious if someone here got it, I hope so. If so, congrats!

"Get Over Yourself" Guitar Solos
belikerick replied to kizanski's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
DINGDINGDING! Love that solo! Have to add: almost ANY solo by Elliot Easton The solo breaks after the drugged out middle of "Whole Lotta Love" - Page perfection -
+100 Geezer is my fave! there's no Sabbath without Geez Have to add the oft mentioned JPJ and Entwistle. One player that no one has mentioned, because he is not admittedly in the class of these other 3, but I always like listening to because of his great tone and power is Mel Schacher of GFR.

Just threw in the T-51 for some Hamer content, really looking at Teles and Robins
-
Taken a lefty T-51/Tele and used it right handed or visa-versa? I know this has been done with strat type axes but never heard of anyone doing it with a Tele. What would stringing it backwards with an angled Tele bridge pickup do to the tone? In fact what does the angled pickup do for a normal tele anyway?? Would it effect the neck pickup tones in any way? Why do I care you ask? II'm not trying to be like Jimi or and thing. I've been jonesing for a t-51/Tele for a while now and may be able to get a killer deal on a lefty and was thinking that could be the cure... IF it sounded good reversed! AND if the volume/tone knobs won't be in the way of playing in that configuration. Am I on drugs to even consider this?!?! Let me know what you think.

Favorite bands that went nowhere, dept.
belikerick replied to BCR Greg's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I really liked School of Fish - even BEFORE I found out that the lead guitar player was Michael Ward (who went on to play with the Wallflowers and on "Perfectly Good Guitar" with John Hiatt). I took lessons from him in the mid 80's out in ""the Valley" when he was playing in a local hair metal band. He also led me to get my first tattoo at "Good Time Charlie’s Tattooland" in Anaheim, Cali -
Now I know why GMPs hardly ever show up on eBay...DAYUM!

The First Tone That Made You Say... "Whoa!"
belikerick replied to Hamerhack's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
When I first heard the opening riff of Black Sabbath/Black Sabbath at a party in early '70 I just about flipped my lid, I could not BELIEVE the sound I was hearing! And it only got better from there... -
Boy I distinctly remember seeing both of those shows live and the performances were each great! I was and am still a big Elvis Costello fan and was really looking forward to seeing him live on TV and he didn't disappoint. First song was "Watching the Detectives", excellent (Watching the Detectives - Live) and then was the aforementioned "Less than Zero" for a little bit then Elvis says "STOP, STOP!" and something about not wanting to do that song and launching into a furious rendition of "Radio, Radio" (Radio, Radio - Live) which we found out later he was told not to play and I think got banned from SNL or just not asked back anyhow. Shades of the Doors on Ed Sullivan Definitely THE Most Memorable Saturday Night Live musical guest for me was DEVO!! I had seen weird posters on campus for a band nobody seemed to know about called DEVO and was curious so when I saw they were on SNL I wanted to check them out. I lived in this "scholarship" house with 40 guys and it really didn't matter who was on, we usually tried to catch the show anyhow. So they announce the musical guest and I'm thinking "OMG who are these freaks from a bad Sci Fi movie?!?!" Then I realize they are playing "Satisfaction" and thought it was fucking nuts! I loved it. (Satisfaction - Live) The rest of the guys watching weren't into it at all but what REALLY got them was when they came out for the final song and played "Jocko Homo" - it started with a short intro by Booji Boy and then total DEVOlution. (Jocko Homo - Live) Cleared the room in a flash. But I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing and have been a DEVOted fan ever since. I went to the record store (yes they were record stores in '78) and bought Q: Are We Not Men? A: We are DEVO the very next day and it's still one of my favorite albums of all time, although now I have it on DVD and my Ipod. Still think I've got the vinyl in my one last box of records I can never seem to get rid of... edited to add all the performances found on YouTube - how cool is that!?

5 Most Underrated Guitar Players of all time
belikerick replied to JohnnyFeedback's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Don't think these guys are "all time" underrated but they are VERY underated in my book. Steve Bartek Davey Johnstone - always liked his playing, especially excellent on "Goodbye Yellowbrick Road" I have to reiterate Kirk Kurtwood, I've seen him live a few times and he's a monster player. ...and James Honeyman Scott uh, Mick Ronson too Oh yeah and Tony Iommi (nah, just kidding ) -
Congratulations and welcome! Let's see, I believe that the suggestions so far have covered EVERY HAMER OFFERED, so much for narrowing it down... The problem is in the phrase "If you had the chance to design the ultimate Hamer, what would you do?". Guys see that and start replying immediately without seeing the rest of your requirements for the guitar. If, as you say, you're looking for versatility and jazzability I'd agree with those that recommend an Artist. It is amazingly versatile and CAN go from Jazzalicious to big and crunchy. If you are able to, I would go into a shop that carries Hamers and test drive a variety of Artists to see if you like mahogany or korina, hums or P-90's. The Artist Ultimate is a beautiful guitar. Personally I can't imagine it could sound any better than my Korina Artist.

Songs that "stopped you dead in your tracks"
belikerick replied to Willie G. Moseley's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
I DO remember that live performance of "Tubular Bells" on Rock Concert - it was GREAT STUFF! (showing my age here, but we used to live for DK's RC!!) As far as songs that stopped me in my tracks... "Whole Lotta Love", Zep - (1969) I remember watching American Bandstand when Dick Clark introduces it to the U.S. and I just couldn't believe what I was hearing. Adios Beatles and Motown, hello heavy metal "Black Sabbath", Sabbath - (1970) I'm at a party and here this song that starts out with rain and bells tolling... after the first verse I was HOOKED! I bought the album the next day and played it constantly till "Paranoid" came out. "Black Sabbath" was the reason my parents got me my own stereo. "Satisfaction", DEVO - (October 1978) DEVO on Saturday Night Live (also played "Joco Homo" as their second song) just blew me away "Surfing with the Alien", Satriani - (1987) heard it on KROQ in L.A. and almost crashed my car "Down in it", NIN - (1989) Wow -
