Had a great time on the phone with Paul Hamer today.
The Shark replied to BCR Greg's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
No Florida history mentioned yet. I bought a black Sunburst with crowns in 1978 from Wanda and Jimmy at Music City in Orlando. It was a 1977 or early '78. Here's a couple of pics that are all I have.... The last time I got a chance to talk to Paul was back in the repair area at Ace Music with Martin Barre. Martin was playing a few cuts from his solo album. It was a great day and Paul was there until the last person left. A great memory to be sure. -
I understand the replies, but you need to understand a few things. Your amp won't sound the same. It will be thinner and the farther it is from you, the more it will sound "foreign". Stage volume will matter less in the overall mix, so get your amp as close to you as possible. If you have a good mix in the monitors, that should mitigate the thinner than usual tone. You'll also hear less of your bandmates. If the stage is large, you'll really need to have your monitor mix with the drums and bass mixed in more than in a room environment. It is a challenge and your post is evident of your concern. It's well founded. Playing on an outside stage can be a great experience, but you have to have "your tone" and be able to hear your bandmates in an even mix. Don't get freaked out, if it's thinner than you're used to. The mix out front will be drastically different than what you hear. Never equate the stage sound with the "house". The two are mutually exclusive in a room that big! Just have fun and don't panic if the mix you hear isn't what you're used to. Cause it won't be. Dogs can sense fear and so can large crowds of people. Have fun and nail your parts. If it isn't the tone and mix you're used to, that's the game. The folks in the crowd aren't hearing what you are. And they are there to have a good time. If you're having a good time, it translates. Just my three cents.

Another sign of "no love" for Hamers
The Shark replied to Hgb5000's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Three and a half hours. Can't find Jay on the Hamer site. Luckily, I get to see him once a year at the Orlando Guitar Show. Usually has a few Hamers. Sometimes the same ones as the previous year. Lots of nice Heritage guitars too. Another guitar company with terrible re-sale value. -
Another sign of "no love" for Hamers

I've always wondered why Hamers have such depressed re-sale values. But it's been that way for a long time. I think it has much to do with offering "off shore" models that are basically the same guitar for 25% the cost of the American model. Then, I think of the PRS cheapos and wonder what the difference might be. Those price-point imports don't seem to hamper the re-sale value of the PRS guitars in any way. Part of me is happy that I bought a killer near-mint 1981 Special last year for just a tad above a grand. A twenty eight year old vintage guitar for a song. The new guitars, in my opinion, are not overpriced for the instruments turned out. I do know that there isn't one dealer within hours of my home where I can play one. I can go twenty miles either way (Daytona Beach or Orlando) and play just about every other manufacturer's guitars. I'd have to drive hours to Dr. Cluck's Music Emporium. A website search tells me to stay home. No Hamers. In fact, I can't find a Hamer Dealer within three to four hours. There's Cluck's in Florida, Jordan Music in Albany Georgia, and Alabama isn't even in the picklist for Hamer Dealers. A whole three states with two dealers. Just using Hamer website searches, but that's depressing. I think two advertised dealers in three contiguous states is the answer to this compelling question, no? Sorry to be so blunt. Only experienced and knowledgable players/collectors will buy without the most important thing to everyone else buying a guitar; holding the guitar. -
We'll probably see 4-digit Standard reissues when they can put a $10k price on them and have buyers. My point exactly. It ain't ever gonna' happen. One can wish!
-
Time for 4-digit Standard relics for less than the vintage ones. "For less than the vintage ones" is probably THE roadblock. Oh, well. It was worth spending a fleeting moment wishing.

Guitar you didn't buy and still kicking yourself...
The Shark replied to Siaip Ciuvas's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
That list is way too long. If I had to pick one; the Mickey Baker Model 1958 Les paul Custom at The Guitar Shop in Orlando Florida in 1984. I think it was $3,200. The case was stripped and painted black. I remember that being the deal breaker. Idiot. -
It's a Telepathic.......mine reviewed in Guitar Player Magazine. The only one................. Korina back...

How many of you play your guitar straight into the amp...
The Shark replied to BubbaVO's topic in Hamer Fan Club Messageboard
Guitar..................cord.....................amp. But then there's the effects loop! -
I've owned a bunch of vintage ones and few of the reissues. Serial's descriptions are spot on. They are kind of dark and more suited to rhythm playing. I love them right on the edge. The Jaguar has always suited me better, but that's personal preference. For what is't worth, I always sell them after a few weeks or months of fun. Don't spend a bunch of money.

Is this guitar still available? Thanks. -
Now, time for the "Back Nine"! Happy Birthday, Greg. You old fart. Dave R.

At the risk of enduring the ridicule of many on this forum; I say Rick Nielsen is one of the greatest entertainers on the planet and his playing is never compared to the greats. Sort of like that guy Pete from The Who. Both are in my essential listening pile. I really think Rick takes the cake. I go see Cheap Trick every chance I get. And Rick is the show. He plays those Hamer guitars too.

Buyer bailed out on me. So, here it is again. Carvin TL-60 w/ all the options. Killer quilted maple top w/ neck thru Koa neck and wings. Fret board is raw birdseye maple w/ no inlays. Matching quilt headstock overlay. Neck is hand rubbed and body is gloss. Coil taps and series/parallel options w/ vintage wind pickups. Tweed case is included. Case has a few water marks and guitar has some normal spider web scratching in the clear and a few light scratches near the knobs (impossible to photograph). Guitar is light and highly resonant. Price is $1,050 shipped in the lower 48. Guitar cost over $1,700 new. Questions please. Any offer entertained. Thanks.

I miss Phil and Freddie the most. Phil had an intangible tension with Gary. Freddie and Brian were incomparable. I couldn't choose. Saw both bands in 1977 in Lakeland Florida. That just doesn't happen for me anymore.

Speaking of spelling a chap's name wrong; the tech is Graham Lilley. Not Graham Tilly. I sold him a tweed twin for Gary a few years ago. We corresponded for a year or so. I'm sorry I missed out on "the purge". Wish I would have had the dough for this one: I got to play it at The Hard Rock Cafe in Orlando once upon a time!

Crappy wide shot, but I ran out of room. '59 Tweed Deluxe, Custom 18wt Marshall Combo, Brown Note D'Lite 22, Brown Note D'Lite 44 Bluesmaster, Red '71 Marshall 50wt in custom covered Bassman cab & a pair of 2x12 Bogner cabs hiding somewhere out of sight. Now, I need a killer Hamer Standard!
