  1. We're weighing a bunch of options, that one just happens to be readily available near him (he's outside the lower 48). I'm really trying to avoid buying and shipping a case to him first, though I do have a line on a universal TKL explorer case locally. How do you all feel about shipping without a case by double-boxing it? From what I've read it sounds like that means: prep the guitar (depending on who you are, that's loosening the strings or not, and maybe a slice of bubble wrap between the strings and fretboard) newspaper around the guitar wrap it in bubble wrap box it surrounded by newspaper or more bubble wrap so that the guitar is immobilized in the inner box wrap THAT box in bubble wrap to immobilize it and then box it for shippingI'm sort of a guitar-shipping newbie, so I'm not really sure what's "enough".
  2. It is a nice '97. We're working out the shipping details now. Edit: And on that note, does anyone know how well a '97 Standard would fit into a Coffin explorer case?
  3. Very nice. It's hard to tell in the pics... on my phone I thought the guard was cream, but here it looks white (that's color gamut for you). Not that it matters much, but which is it?
  4. . Thanks for the pics. I sent you a PM after your first post with some follow up questions.
  5. That makes me feel a little less bad for having already ordered from Amazon when I read your "buy it anywhere but Amazon" post. Congratulations. Mine's out for delivery now. I was hoping to have a nice Standard in-hand (or at least en route) before the used Hamer market a'splodes from the new book, but clearly it was not to be.
  6. Lately this has been doing it for me when I need to snap out of it. Edit: Summer Song is a good call too. Actually almost any of Satch's uptempo radio-rockers will make me smile a little. Radar Love is another one I'm partial to... Come to think of it, if it's a good "driving song", it's likely going to cheer me up.
  7. Hard tail preferred and I'm open to most finishes. Player grade ok... Casa de Sixesandsevens is no museum. Whatcha got?
  8. That's terrible. I feel so bad for her and those she left behind. I've had some seemingly hopeless moments and they were awful. I can't even imagine how bad it must have to be to really end it. I wish there was a way to feel the love that's hiding out there without having to ask for it. To hear that supporters came pouring out of the woodwork right afterwards seems all too typical for suicides. If only there was a way to have access to that love "in time".
  9. While I take your meaning, that's some choice wording right there. Great stuff ZMB! It definitely makes me want a set.
  10. I'd love to get mine signed or get one of those plates, so count me in. P.s. Will mine be a one, two, or three digit plate at this point? I hear they just weren't the same after a while...
  11. For those that have spent time with them, at what price point do you feel like the imports start to get decent? I'm guessing last year's 35th anniversary (at around $800 new) or this year's Chicago Series ($550+) are into the "fair" range? I played a 35th anniversary V for a bit at a shop... While the fit, finish and feel were good, it wasn't love at first strum, so I passed on it. My first guitar was a Z-shape, so I've been thinking of going back there with one of the Chicago Series models. With a 15% coupon at MF/GC, it would be like $466 for the unbound ones. At this point, I'm trying to talk myself out of waiting (maybe indefinitely) for the stars to align for me to pick up a USA Standard.
  12. I'd make that half mini-Z, half Les Paul. -ish My bad. Half wannabe-Standard, half V.
  13. “Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” - Ira Glass
  14. That's a bummer. I got a response the same day, so Shelton's out there somewhere.
  15. Heh. Sadly it seems if you read $350 enough you start to believe it.
  16. Um, I do not think that word means what you think it means. I'm also embarrassed to say this but looking at your pics is the first time it dawned on me that the ML is half V, half Z.
  17. In case anyone cares, Shelton replied that he's Internet only, so no local discount for me.
  18. Not that it isn't beautiful, but isn't $1099 still high, even for a wraptail? Also: I should go knock on the guy's door and offer him $350 in cash and see if he takes it. You're right tho Thorn, that's a pretty one. When I got my orange one, I was originally hoping to find one in Aztec Gold. Now I remember why.
