They're on a mission from God

The Band was probably the most un-rock-star ensemble anyone could ever invent. They sounded fantastic. On stage, they looked goofy and awkward; as if they barely had command of their instruments (e.g., Danko hacking and flailing away at the strings on his Ripper bass; Robbie's laughably exagerrated grimacing while executing simple pinch harmonics, Levon's somewhat jerky looking physical cadence on the throne).  But the sound was just so well blended and executed. They were, it turns out, a great band. "It Makes No Difference" is just perfect as a performance.

But to my ears, the Eagles, CSN/CSNY, etc. were light years ahead of The Band.  Frankly, these guys were never going to survive either the MTV era or Robbie's ego.  Best that they packed it in after a good run. RIP Garth.

A lot of people would agree with your ears, but I am not in that camp. I love The Band, but I never listen to those other two (or three). Joe Walsh is, of course, the other side of the pillow, but beyond him, I can take it or leave it.

The Last Waltz, on the other hand, is one of a handful of albums that would be the soundtrack for my 20s in Austin, Robbie Robertson's coked out, annoying pinch harmonics aside. One of my favorite memories was getting home from work one night and hearing "Ophelia" blasting through the wall of the house into the garage. I walk in, and my best friend is dancing around in a desk chair while wearing shades, polishing off the last bit of a fifth of Jameson, wearing a metal bowl on his head like a helmet, and singing his lungs out. I don't think I've ever seen that much pure joy on another human's face before or sense.

Just so many great memories where their music played a part. Last thing I recorded before moving from Austin the Gainesville was a mashup cover of Blind Melon's "Change" and "The Weight" with a buddy of mine.

My favorite album with the Band is Dylan's Planet Waves.  Just killer, loose playing with great songs.  Even though Robbie's goddamned pinch harmonics nearly ruin Going, Going, Gone.

Gotta admit that the Eagles with both Walsh and Felder were lightning in a bottle. Walsh is just perfectly imperfect.

Not to worry. I would never compare a band I fukking hate with a group of relative merit, like The Band.

And don’t ever use, “Hey now”, again. Iko-Iko don’t like it!
