That sucks.  He lived near Charlotte.  Whenever his son’s band would play, he’d show up and do a mini Boston set with them. Was a great singer.

Yes that is strange. Never saw this version of the band but saw an early show with Brad Delp and later with Fran Cosmo who IMHO actually I thought was the best.

That's really sad.  Way too young.

The story of Scholz alternating his vocals with Delp's and no one could tell the difference is pretty cool.  I only got to see Boston once, but it was post-Delp and I think pre-DeCarlo so that must have been with Michael Sweet singing.

Wow, that's unpleasant.

They hadn't toured since 2017. I know Tommy had his own thing going too, and it sometimes referred to him as 'former' lead singer of Boston, but could never find out if that was intentional.

Tom claimed a couple years ago that his analog recorder had broken and he couldn't find anyone to fix it. Still refused to go digital. Never was able to find out if any of that was true or not. That entire operation has pushed 'stories' since the very beginning, and appears to have spent far more time in courtrooms than it ever did on stage.

I didn't really follow Boston post break-up, but I always thought Brad's story was sad.  I own his 1984 Jackson soloist hard tail and Gary's with the Kahler.  One serial number apart.

If TS made this claim, then I call BS. He has almost limitless resources to seek out proper repair of his vintage recording gear. Hell, he could probably do it himself.

Wait? MIT Tom Scholz couldn't find anyone to fix an analog recorder? He's Tom Scholz - the engineer that created an entire sound out of whole cloth.

We're to believe he couldn't fix it himself (much less find someone to do the work)? 🤣

Whenever I see something about Boston, I forget Gary Pihl is in the group.  Another unsung guy.

Concur. I found one place he said it sort of publicly, in an MIT article about him from 2024.

Quote

Today, Scholz’s home studio lies fallow—not for lack of inspiration, but because it remains resolutely analog, and “unfortunately there’s almost no one left locally who can maintain or repair analog studio equipment.”...

He still hopes to get his studio back up and running, “because I am still writing music, believe it or not, in what’s left of my brain,” he says. “And it’s very frustrating not to be able to go in and make the recording of what I hear.”

https://www.technologyreview.com/2024/08/27/1095835/not-just-another-band-from-boston/

He could easily get someone from anywhere to do that. Or learn how to do it himself. He learned how to do a lot of other things like that, and clearly has the brains and ability. I understand his studio is quite cramped and it may be a huge pita to get equipment out and sent off, but he could get someone from anywhere that's capable of it, fly them in, put them in a hotel for a few days, and let them fix it.

So, given the history of 'stories' with this crew, there may be some or no truth to it.

Even in that article, there are numerous other claims about the history of the band and making the first record that are suspect at best.

Some of their prodigious legal excursions can be read here: https://www.thirdstage.ca/boston/articles/legal-documents

Still sucks about Tommy D though. He seemed pretty cool. Hell of a ride to go from Home Depot to fronting Boston.

Another urban legend about TS is that he spearheaded the development of the Polaroid OneStep land camera. That wasn’t mentioned in the MIT article, so I assume it’s hearsay.
