Menehune Posted April 13 Posted April 13 Now half price! 1 bottlerocket Posted April 13 Posted April 13 I remember an article about one of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s amplifiers turning up in a storage container. It was later covered by ToneQuest Magazine, who got a chance to test it. Their takeaway was interesting—it didn’t sound particularly great on its own, but it made a lot more sense in a live mix. Was that the one that was stolen from Jimmy's warehouse that they ended up selling back to him? Quote
1 bottlerocket Posted April 13 Posted April 13 I would have to read the TQR article again for the details but going on memory I believe you are correct. I think it was connected to the 2007 storage unit thefts. 1 Quote

ARM OF HAMER Posted April 13 Posted April 13 The sound was in his hands, not in his equipment. 2 1 Quote

We've all heard about guys playing some other players rigs and they never sound like them. The only time this might hold up is if the gear is special for some reason. Like, Chris Squire's broken Rickenbacker bass. It had a unique tone due to one of the pickups being defective. Or, maybe a custom-made guitar like Jerry Garcia with all that wacky electronics etc. One other thing though, If you've played through a Modeler, sometimes, the tone is crazy close. Like a Brian May Vox patch or a Boston Rockman tone. I just say that as I picked up a used ToneX pedal and damn, if some of the amp captures don't sound amazing. As soon as I played the Hiwatt patches, I was right there Live at Leeds. Very cool. Edited April 13 by santellavision 2 Quote

Jakeboy Posted April 17 Posted April 17 I LOVE SROs….King of the Alnicos! I found this somewhat confusing…I have always red that SRV was all about Super Reverbs, Vibroverbs, etc. mixed with a Marshall. When I saw his exhibit at the Grammy museum there was also a tweed Bassman and a plexi stack that was beat to crap. I didn’t know he played through a Twin Reverb. And the EVs I heard he liked were 12Ls…or so I apparently wrongly assumed. Further, Tommy Shannon went on record saying that SRV fell immediately in love with JB’s Dumble and recorded all tracks on Texas Flood through “Mother Dumble” straight in…. SRV was so very good. I refused to play a Strat for 20 years because every time I did, all I would do is play his licks and emulate him. And that didn’t happen on any other guitar and I wanted to craft my own sound. Now I grab a Strat and launch into his songs and just giggle. I’m able to do it now. 2 Quote
