polara Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Okay, last night in an antique store I saw a Hondo "machine gun" guitar. Shaped like a gun, with two humbuckers and a whammy. Trigger is the pickup selector, one volume knob on top of the body. It needs a pickup ring and some cleaning and setup but the neck is good and it's in pretty good shape. I'm tempted to go back and get it just for weird laghs 'n' grins... if I ever needed to sell it, would this have ANY value, ya think? I just don't want to toss $180 down the drain for something cool but silly. Anyone familar with these? Anyone WANT one? Thanks!
serial Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I don't think you'd have much trouble getting your money back out of that one. I remember those, but thought that someone else did 'em too? Post pics!
mathman Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I once had a Hondo guitar that sounded like a machine gun sometimes because of the crappy electronics. Of course it always jammed...... I can't give you advice on whether it is worth anything but it would probably have appeal on ebay if you wanted to get rid of it.
polara Posted July 21, 2006 Author Posted July 21, 2006 Here's one on Ebay. Hmmmmm. Yep, that is the one.Hondo auctionProb'ly not worth much aside from curiosity value. It'd look cool onstage though, as my band is kinda power-pop /indie!
sw686blue Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 My very first guitar was a Hondo Stratocaster in sunburst. What a piece of crap. It was a choice between that and an El Degas Strat. I preferred the sunburst over the metallic red.
Steve Haynie Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Oh great! I need that for my 80's era Alice Cooper tribute band in which I play Kane Roberts parts.
Lockbody Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 One of my buddies has one. A decent $150 guitar, but not much more.
MCChris Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Oh great! I need that for my 80's era Alice Cooper tribute band in which I play Kane Roberts parts. THAT'S where I remember seeing that guitar!Weird juxtaposition .... Alice Cooper backed by some Chippendale's dudes.
princeofdarkness56 Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 That was Kane Roberts on guitar for Alice in the late 80's. Actually a very good shreeder. Also the Bass player was Kip Winger before his solo career took off and the other guitarist was Reb Beech.
edgar_allan_poe Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 and the other guitarist was Reb Beech.I don't think it was Reb. I think it was the other guitar player in Winger. Not sure of his name, and I am not sure if he played anything on the albums. But, Winger had another guitar player who toured with them and just did R guitar while Reb played all the leads.
edgar_allan_poe Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Just did a google search for Winger to find out the dudes name. They have Paul Taylor listed as the Bass player....hmmm...my guess is that it was Paul Taylor in Alices band cuz I know Kip played the bass for Winger.
Steve Haynie Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Paul Taylor was listed in the tour books as Paul Horowitz and Paul Horrors. He played keyboards. In Winger he became known as Paul Taylor. He also did a tour with Tommy Shaw.
LordOfTheThighs Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I seen him play with Alice back in late '86 and later in '87, on the same tour. The later show I actually caught the baby doll Alice chunks out during "Billion Dollar Babies". 3rd row center stage. Very cool evening. Kane Roberts can RIP ... I was totally impressed with his playing. He's so good that he actually was playing with those gloves on.
Rockola Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 I had a Hondo Longhorn from the early '80s that was actually manufactured by Tokai. It was screwed together pretty tight....nice modern (solid body, on-board boost, brass bridge) take on the classic prior to JerryJones offerings. The gun guitar might be sub'ed as well. Still, it looks like a wall decoration. YMMV.S.
princeofdarkness56 Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 The guitar in the picture with Kane Roberts is not a Hondo. He had his custom made by someone but I can't remember who. Durring one of the solo's, it would actually shoot out flames. Kane still plays. Has a few solo albums out. But I think is main gig is as some kind of graphic artist. He has done some album art work for a bunch of different groups. He has also designed a few video games that are on the market. A man a of many talents.
Nuclear Wessel Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 Al Pitrelli played for Alice Cooper in the ealry 90's I think. Is that who you're thinking of? He was a shredder, and went on to join another famous band but I can't remember who. I may have a track with him playing on it on one of those "Guitar on the Edge" CD's.
alantigold Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 The guitarist on the Nightmare Returns tour was a guy named Devin 7 (or Devlin 7, can't remember). Weird looking guy. I remember it well from an MTV concert, especially because there was a girl in the audience on her boyfriend's shoulders w/her shirt hiked up. Nice.Alan

The guitarist I was thinking of was the other guitarist with Kane..I think the previous poster had it right though. I am probably thinking of the keyboard player. Either way..I am pretty sure that Reb Beach and Kane Roberts never played with Alice together.
princeofdarkness56 Posted July 21, 2006 Posted July 21, 2006 The other guitarist with Kane was Delvin 7, real name Artie Funaro. Paul Taylor was the keyboardist and would also play guitar on some of the songs that did not require keyboards. A three guitar attack was nice to see live. Al Pitrelli went on to play with Savatage, Megadeath and Trans Siberian Orchestra, to which I still thinks he is with.
