Punkavenger Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Howdy just bought Black magic Jacks 2003 special after the deal I had on the 82 special fell through. The special that was previously galejt's and previously, previously Kizanski's Vintage orange, solid one piece mahogany, fat neck SUSTAIN BLOCK BCR custom order I'm proud to carry on the HFC tradition ... Who knows this geetar might soon be yours! anyways ... what Humbuckers would YOU put in it ? For a hard rock vintage Les Paul vibe Gracias! *WWJD what would Jimi do ? PS my apologies if some of the above listed pickups are not technically PAF's These are all pickups that have been suggested to me as sounding good in that particular guitar and I am trying to make an educated choice with the help of the HFC Thank you ALSO I ran across the "Bare knuckles" website last night ... anyone know anything about these pickups? AND I haven't received the guitar yet... so in for all I know it could sound great with whatever it has in it ... just having a little fun!

DIMARZIO VIRTUAL HOT PAF should be the way to go for a sustainblock Special.
Travis Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 While the Duncan Custom/Custom is a great pickup, and would sound awesome in that guitar, it's not really a PAF type pickup. So I didn't vote for it. I chose the Antiquities because I've always wanted to try them. I like the Seth Lovers, and the Antiquities are simply aged Seths. So, that was my reasoning.
HamerHokie Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Umm Rio Texas/BBQ PAF's?!?-Austin Neither is the Voodoo.
BCR Greg Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Umm Rio Texas/BBQ PAF's?!?-Austin Neither is the Voodoo. The Gregwind is a different animal, but you get a killer PAF tone out of it until you dime it.
kizanski Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 Keep in mind that is a very BRIGHT sounding guitar, and although I am a fan of the Custom/Custom, I would never put one in there. With the stock Duncan 59's in there, it sounded like someone throwing a rock through a window.
sw686blue Posted July 25, 2006 Posted July 25, 2006 I voted for the WCR Fillmores. They came installed in my Standard and I love their tone. No muddiness, very clean and fat. They're not cheap though.
Punkavenger Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 come on you guys ... 198 views and only 18 votes? put some effort into it! jeez
Guest pirateflynn Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I voted Fralin PAF. I would also recommend WCR Darkbursts or Crossroads.........haven't tried the Fillmores. Nice guitar!
El Kabong Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 The Virtual series Dimarzios kick all sorts of ass that I would never have imagined. I wouldn't bother with the foo foo 'booteak' flavour of the week, unless if your playing and related gear warrant it. It's in the fingers, anyway.
Brewmaster Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I voted for the Fillmores BUT....they are a Hot PAF. Great pickup. I finally put a set in my 57 RI Goldtop and they give chills. To bad I suck as a player but I do get some GREAT tones out of the guitar. The WCR Crossroads are the ticket if you are looking for a real PAF. I put a set in a Studio and it's spot on. I'm playing with the idea of putting a set in my 335. I think they would elevate that guitar to another level.
BCR Greg Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I wouldn't know what I am talking about, since I only had the guitar made and played it for a while.......BUTI say Rio Grandes.NOT that my opinion would be based on having ACTUALLY PLAYED THE GUITAR (and learned what hte acoustic resonance of the guitar feels like).(sniff, sniff)Smell that? It's sarcasm mixed with actual experience.Polls in general like this rarely work. Only someone who has played the guitar can recommend pickups for it. But the HFC is easily the most helpful of any board that I have seen, and kudos to everyone for actually offering advice.
kizanski Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 I say Rio Grandes. ...which is what I said when Punkavenger emailed me.But what do I know? My opinion was only based on having owned the guitar for a couple of years (as I was the one who ordered it).Man! This place WREAKS of sarcasm now!But seriously, ladies and germs, I usually throw in a Rio Grande Genuine Texas/BBQ combo and call it a day. This guitar being a very dense, bright, solid slab of mahogany, I feel pretty strongly about it.
Punkavenger Posted July 26, 2006 Author Posted July 26, 2006 c'mon Kiz, you KNOW you told me to spray paint it pink and install the barbie doll funhouse pickups by mattelfess up brotherman!
kizanski Posted July 26, 2006 Posted July 26, 2006 c'mon Kiz, you KNOW you told me to spray paint it pink and install the barbie doll funhouse pickups by mattelfess up brotherman! Not that there's anything wrong with that...
black magic Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Put a Rio set in man, it is way to bright with the Damarzios it has in it right now. I love the BBQ, they fatten anything up!! Jack.
Punkavenger Posted July 27, 2006 Author Posted July 27, 2006 Greg... could you email me with a price for a BBQ set? all black with some black rings ...used is ok if you have something laying about thats in good cond. Danka
kizanski Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 all black with some black rings ... NOOOOOooooooo!!!!!Alright. That's enough!Give it back to me.
Guest pirateflynn Posted July 27, 2006 Posted July 27, 2006 Zebras would look great in that Special. I agree.... zebras would be killer.
Punkavenger Posted July 27, 2006 Author Posted July 27, 2006 somehow I knew that would get a reaction...I've tried really hard to be a cream guy, the 82 special I was going to buy looked pretty cool with the original double cream and zebra set up...But seriously with the black knobs and black headstock ... I think the black pickups will be killerPlus I play a lot of Sabbath and drop d tuning stuff ... cream?cream? cream reminds me of Pat Boonewhat would Wino think?it could be worse, I was going to go with nickel covered

Danka Now you`re talking man!! I don`t like Cream pickups either. I don`t mind Black/Cream with a black ring though on the right guitar. Jack.
