The seller's handle sounds familar............ "claywheels" who is that?

Posted

The Clay Wheels are old Skaterock band from the SF Bay Area(San Jose, I think?). I wouldn't be surprised if it's one of the band members. I used to work in skateboarding and have lived here most of my 35 years. It's a small world. FWIW

Hey folks,

I spotted that early '80s Hamer Special on E-bay today. What a shame that guy sold it for only $430.00. He could have got more money for it. I called him the same day Kurt called him about that guitar. The guy wanted to sell it to the buyer with the highest offer when I chatted with him about his guitar. Now "claywheels" is going to resell it. We'll see what he gets for it. Is someone here going to buy that guitar and keep it in the family? Or is it going to some vintage collector's glass case collection?

Personally, I hope he LOSES money on the deal. B)

Anyone? Buehler?

What do you mean by "Legit"?

Any reason to think that it has been modded, refinished, or anything else suspect, etc? or does it look like a factory Hamer Special from 1982 with a matching headstock?

Hey CameronScott,

I think the guys are sort of upset about how that guitar was sold. I tried myself and the seller sold it to the highest buyer. He basically turned a Craig's List sale into an illegal auction. The seller misled potential buyers of the actual price and then jacked up the price until someone made an offer that appealed to him. It's this sort of stuff from Craig's List that I won't deal with anymore. You either have a set price or put in on E-bay for auction.

Looks factory legit to me, I just won't deal with somebody like that if I can help it.

Matching headstocks were not uncommon back then on the opaques.

This guy bought it from the guy on CL. Now he has listed it on eBay. How is that wrong?

Hey Cameron Scott,

Are you the owner of the '80s Hamer Special? You come on to this messageboard defending both the seller and the new owner. Are you condoning people who list items on Craig's List for a certain amount then proceed to change the price with different buyers? That to me is fraudulent and I won't have nothing to do with that. If anything I'll report the seller to Craig's List as well. You're using a website for private party sale, free of charge. It's not an E-bay auction or any kind of Internet auction where the highest offer is the winner.

First, get your facts straight without attacking me. I did not "come on to this messageboard defending both the seller and the new owner." Thanks also for the wonderful education on craigslist.

The original seller was out of line, agreed. I fail to see how the person who bought it is out of line for selling it on eBay. My only interest is that I live in the Bay Area and am considering buying it for local pick-up. If I do, I will play it, not put it in a glass case.

While it is a free society and free market, more often than not and particularly b/c this is somewhat of a small community, "bad vibes" get associated with an instrument when a lousy seller is involved in the line. While the guitar looks like there's nothing wrong with it, there's always that element of mistrust associated with it being passed along by a somewhat unscrupulous seller and now being flipped within a day or two by someone else who may or may not be the original seller himself.

Even if I wanted the guitar, I'd probably stay away from it, rational or not. It isn't THAT unique of an instrument. Now if it was a sustain block 80s FB with boomers, I'd have snagged it from the original seller myself-honor be damned! B)

Hey Cameron Scott,

My facts are straight, my friend. I attempted to buy that guitar from the original seller and I'm relating my experiences to everyone on this messageboard. If you feel that I flamed you in any way, I apologize about that. Thanks for agreeing with me that the seller is indeed out of line. The orignal owner went about selling an instrument in a very shady way that I don't agree with. I have to bring attention to any unscrupulous seller that I'm involved with. I wouldn't want any of my fellow HFC members getting ripped off in any way nor would I want it to happen to me. I consider the people on this messageboard my extended Hamer family. B)

Since you have an interest in that particular guitar, I hope that you're able to get it and not get ripped off. I've bought & sold a few things from members here and have had honest & fair dealings with both the sellers & buyers. Everyone knows of my reputation on this messageboard as an honest person. This is a very strong community with a particular love for Hamer U.S. made guitars.

I don't know if anyone else noticed but somebody didn't make his reserve.

So now the guitar is costing him money.

Am I wrong but I don't think the guitar in this condition was worth the $430.00 he paid

I've never bought a guitar for cheap with the intention of flipping it to make money if I buy it and right away don't like it I sell it for what I have in it. If I keep it for a time and sell it I'll ask market price and settle for what I bought it for or even less (depending on how much I want the next one)

I realize that stores have to make a profit but I'm not in it for the money.

So even if the guy on Ebay isn't the Craigslist seller good for him! Serves him right

seller says he bought it for nostalgias sake, apparently had one just like it as a young man and had to have it.

he then got it over that real quick ,and decided to off it.

hey...been there done that.

I definately like the matched head ,and opaque red is my thing on a hamer.

its pretty rough from the pics that I've seen.

plus if memory serves me there is no case.

so in my mind tough to justify more than the $185-325 originally posted.

its a VERY player grade guitar with an interesting finish.

I dont believe it will ever be worth much, getting spendy today.

Can't say I agree.

I've sold Specials in worse condition than that (accurately described, of course) for much more than that.

Only a couple of months ago, two amber Specials in only slightly better condition went in the $1000 range. That's not what I would call the going rate, but they do get up there.

Trans red with matching headstock? Not "unobtainium" but on the rare side for sure.

No. I think the seller's games, some lousy photos in a poorly put together ebaY ad, and the holiday season all have contributed to the lack of sale here.

Give me that guitar, my camera, a setting Sun, and a different page on the calendar, and I'll bag $800 for that guitar without breaking a sweat. Gar-rown-teed.
