silentman Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 For me, Dream Theater/Queensryche/Fates Warning a few years back was a goodie.

Guest Meshuggah Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Mahavishnu Orchestra and the Albany Symphony Orchestra.SUNY, Albany, NY, around 1971 or so.But there was this one Steppenwolf concert.....
Brooks Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 really too many to list; seems they book much more genre specific openers in the last 25 years.
cmatthes Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 The WHO, the Clash, The Hooters (was only marred by the yawnfest that was Santana) in Philly back in '82.Another great one was Cheap Trick opening for STP in '96 (or was it '97?). Wow.
pesocaster Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Steve Morse Band opening for Rush in 1986 Denver CO ... My two Fave bands at the time in one night... awesome
marcus2 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Peso,That must have been awesome! My follow-up would be Eric Johnson opening for Rush back in 1991 on the Roll the Bones Tour. I saw that one night in Bloomington, IL and the next night in Milwaukee, WI.Fantastic stuff!Marc

BruceM Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Vanity 6 and The Time opening for Prince on St. Patrick's Day in 1983 was a fun one! I was one of the few dressed in green...90% of the fans were black and dressed to the nines. They were also very reserved, which surprised me a lot. I was partyin' with my friends, for sure.Utopia opening for The Tubes was another great one. That must have been 84 or 85, right after Amadeus won some Acadamy Awards. Fee did the White Punks on Dope chorus with a big wig and Amadeus garb, with all the hot women dressed the same, with poofy mini-skirts, if you can imagine that.Cheap Trick opening for Heart at Alpine Valley, 1979 or so. Both bands were on top of their game.Midnight Oil opened for Heart and John Cougar (hadn't changed his name yet) at Poplar Creek in the Chicago 'burbs around 1985 or so. I wasn't a John Cougar fan yet, and Midnight Oil definitely blew him away, IMHO.
MCChris Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Monster Magnet and Corrosion of Conformity about 10 years ago was a good'un.
BruceM Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 California Guitar Trio opened for King Crimson in the mid-nineties. I had never heard of CGT before, but they blew me away. Three guys dressed in black playing black Ovations. Amazing stuff. I liked them better than KC, with Fripp & Eno. I still listen to the CGT stuff on occasion.
phoenix Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 ARMS. Clapton, Beck and Page. Got it on tape. it was Beck's night at MSG
BruceM Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Montrose opened for Brownsville Station and Mountain at the gymnasium at Eastern IL University in 74 or 75. All the bands were very good, but I thought Montrose guitar tone (and songs) blew everyone else off the stage. The place was so full of smoke that during Mountain's set, the fire alarms went off. You couldn't hear the alarm, but the flashing "FIRE" signs were very unsettling, to say the least.A few years later I saw Nazareth open for Ted Nugent at the same venue. Ted was so effin' loud that I sat through his whole set with my fingers in my ears, and my ears were still ringing the next day. OUCH!
Bruiser Brody Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Killer Bruce! I would love to have seen Montrose back then (same w/ Zep, Sab, RS)The Mule and Drive By Truckers was a good pairing.

Willie G. Moseley Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 As noted on the other thread, Thorogood opening for ZZ TOP, '97Kansas opening for Yes, 2000---definitive bands in that genreKansas opening for STYX, '03Georgia Power Co., (the original) Santana, Joe Cocker, Chicago (in that order)---Atlanta Municipal Auditorium, Oct. '69 Bob Seger System opening for MC5---December 1970....JEEZUS!Lynyrd Skynyrd opening for ZZ TOP---1999 (you coulda flip-flopped the order, IMO, and there wouldn't have been any difference)Derek Trucks Band opening for the Allmans (i.e., Trucks doing double duty)---October 2002John Waite, Peter Frampton, Journey---June 2001 (I think); a good mix for radio-friendly listenersMay think of some others
Guest pirateflynn Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 John Waite, Peter Frampton, Journey---June 2001 (I think); a good mix for radio-friendly listenersThat was a good show, especially Waite and Frampton.
serial Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 A big plus for Cheap Trick opening for STP in '97. GREAT show.Foghat opening for BOC was good b/c both bands were clearly hard-working touring bands at or near the top of their game (Fire of Unk. Origin tour-'81). I remember wanting to play slide REALLY bad after seeing the Foghat show.
Turdus Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 AC/DC (with Bon) opening for UFO (without Schenker) - 1979. If MS had been there, I think it would have been the show of a lifetime.
Brooks Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 al dimeola, john mclaughlin, paco delucia, & steve morse, all together on acoustics. went back in high school ~'84, at a ~1000 seat theater. there was supposed to be 2 shows, we had tix for the 2nd show. got there early, and there was no ticket takers or security, just an open door w/ amazing acoustic shredding wafting out. we walked in, the place was packed, so we walked to the front and sat in the asile. watched ~35 minutes, amazing!! found out the 2nd show was cancelled, so we got a full refund on our tix!!i was a big dimeola fan, but i gotta say that morse stole the show; everyone but morse was doing that "fri nite in SF" style tremelo picking & overplaying, but morse just busted out w/ some bluegrass and soulful bendy licks and really stood out.ps- also gotta give props to the 4-5 texxas jams i went to in the mid 80's. i forget exact lineups, but i saw gary moore (w/ ian paice on drums), ozzy w/ jake, rush, VH w/ sam, metallica, deep purple (made out w/ a "perfect stranger", hot little chick that i woulda took home except she lived in waxahachie and i didnt wanna drive her home the next day!!)... good times.
belgian Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 George Thoregood, J Geils Band & the Rolling Stones in Rotterdam in '82.
matchful Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Ozzy, Ratt and Motley Crue in 83 in Dallas
md2020 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 DLR-era VH and anybody willing to have a lotta mostly empty paper cups rain down on them, like Robert Fleischman, the Cats, Rail, and (then-unsigned) Autograph.
