Since Jackson(FMIC) raise their custom shop prices thru the roof, I am thinking of going maybe with a custom Robin Medley. Anyone have Medley pics with the regular headstock on it? I know they made them, but you don`t see very many. I would go total custom including the regular headstock, etc........... Thanks-Jack.
black magic Posted March 5, 2007 Author Posted March 5, 2007 Kiz, I like the pointy headstock on the Medleys, but not reversed, and it seams the regular models are all reversed. I have seen them non-reveresed and they look very good!! Jack.

They are harvested from the northern end of the Atchafalaya Swamp Basin. These planks produce the spankiest, boldest low-end and slicey but mellow high end bolt-on bodies you can imagine. I will gladly scour the pallet and get you a gorgeous cut of wood for a transparent finish, Jack. One thing to note, however...They are typically stoopid lightweight in addition to the tone qualities. I know you like your guitars to weigh in like marble. Just let me know if you want me to help out. And I can search out a pretty but HEAVY slab too

I will probably do something like this:Mahogany Body-Tung OiledMahogany Neck-Tung Oiled(maybe maple-definitely not on a neck thru)Not sure on the Neck Joint yetRegular Pointy headstock(non-reversed)1 Humbucker Direct mounted(maybe slanted) Probably a Rio BBQNon-Recessed Original Floyd or Kahler Pro1 Volume Knob24.75 Scale22 or 24 6100 FretsEbony BoardOffset Dot inlays MOPBlack Hardware1 11/16 " NutNow the neck can`t be too thin, like a Medium C chape like the Chap Customs is fine or even like a Jackson Soloist, medium D shape. I will probably go Bolt-On or Set Neck. If bolt on, I don`t want a blocky heel.Not sure what one will cost, but it may be worth a shot!!Any thoughts are encouraged please.Jack

The heel does get in the way a little when I'm trying to bend at the 22nd fret! I don't know how Hamer did it on the bolt on Cali's and Chapparals. It never seems to be in the way no matter how high I go. The wiring is cool. Two stack humbuckers, and the bridge humbucker can be switched to parallel with a push-pull switch on the volume knob, so all the favorite Str@t tones are there too, and all hum cancelling. Jack, your custom Robin sounds wicked! Post a pic when you get it if you decide to go through with it, and let me know when it's up for sale! Oh and Jack, have you considered the Robin splits 2-4 headstock? I guess those were never as popular as the 6 on a side headstocks, but it'd make it uniquely Robin.

My pref would be OFR - if those aren't stock, are they available as a custom order option? Green swamp ash with an ebony board and black OFR/hardware sounds like a winner. Hmm....There's a couple of 2004 Rangers around here; a red one with a chunky maple neck (7 lbs) and a featherweight (6.5 ish) blue one formerly of the JeffR collection with a rosewood board. That blue one has impressed a few guests who picked it up. Both pretty nice guitars.

The one with a flat baseplate like an original Floyd. It works great. Carvin was using them then too, as was Zion. My Medley was built in '92. Long as you guys are talking what options you'd order, the neck on mine is really nice looking flame maple. I think that'd be worth asking for.

Scottcrud Posted March 5, 2007 Posted March 5, 2007 Jack,I hate to burst your bubble, but Robin won't build you a 24.3/4 scale Medley, Greg, correct me if I'm wrong, but I also doubt they'll build you a mahogony bodied Medley, the bolt-on Robins are famous for being exclusively built with Swamp Ash. My Raider is extremely heavy, like a Les Paul custom. I'm about to buy another Raider which is pretty light compared to mine, it actually sounds a little darker, but it does have different pickups.

I never sold my CS Soloist, didn`t have the heart and I have gotten use to the 25.5 scale more and more, but I do prefer the 24.75 scale. I use 9-42`s on all of my guitars regardless of scale. My Soloist plays, sounds and looks to good to sell :-) As for the Robin, if they won`t make me exactly what I want, they are out, I will not compromise on my specs when paying good money for a guitar. I am not trying to sound like a prick at all, but I feel most of you would feel the same way. Scott, you may be right about them only making the Robin certain ways, but I do know they have made them with the non-reversed headstock at least. If Robin won`t do it, I am down to Hill guitars in Cleveland,OH. or Warmoth.I am buying a short scale shredder to compliment my Soloist not replace it. Jack.
