cmatthes Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 I'm doubtful it was actually Pete's, but I think the term "Townshend" was used just to classify the destruction of the instrument.Exactly - that's not likely one of Pete's speaker-airer-outers!
Dennis Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 I always felt the SG was shaped like a boat anchor for a reason... Don't throw it off the roof, toss it off a boat.
Jamie K Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Greg - I think it is more interesting in its current condition....it immediately screams "Pete!" (even if it wasn't his.) Why not mount it into a display case with a plexiglass cover, throw in some Who memorabilia, and hang it up in the shop somewhere? just a thot...Jamie

MCChris Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 It appears that any truth behind the allegation that this guitar was destroyed by Pete Townshend is mired in the muck of Platzer's murky marketing speak.
kizanski Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 It appears that any truth behind the allegation that this guitar was destroyed by Pete Townshend is mired in the muck of Platzer's murky marketing speak. My my...the manner in which you mock the man with your mention of murky marketing mired in the muck...
BCR Greg Posted July 3, 2007 Author Posted July 3, 2007 Checking in from the mountains....No, it's not Pete's guitar, the thread title refers to what Pete DID to all of those guitars. It will rise again.Back into the woods(hick town library computers give me the heebies!!!!!)
licksville Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 Kinda reminds of a line in the first Karate Kid movie where Miyagi is trying to catch a fly with chopsticks. 'Man who catch fly with chopstick accomplish anything'.
kizanski Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 No, it's not Pete's guitar...Good.I don't know what stupid thing I would have done to get it, but believe me, it would have been stupid.
Guest Meshuggah Posted July 3, 2007 Posted July 3, 2007 So can someone clarify...was that actually a Pete smasheroo guitar? If so, anyone other than Kiz getting the Greg-repaired product would be just plain wrong. Because he looks the most like the deaf empresario?

BCR Greg Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 Glued up and testing the work..... 11s tuned to F# outta be a good test.......
kizanski Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 WOW! Looked like a pile of garbage last time I saw it.Tell me the BADASS bridge is just for testing purposes.
BubbaVO Posted March 16, 2008 Posted March 16, 2008 Impressive. But can you reassemble the burled walnut dash from a '72 XJS? Hmmm? Well, can you?
BCR Greg Posted March 16, 2008 Author Posted March 16, 2008 As a kid, I learned to work on cars with my uncle, a Jaguar mechanic. I refinished a lot of Jag wood bits.So....yes I can.Yes, the BadAss is just for testing purposes. The Grovers will be gone as well.
BCR Greg Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 It survived the weekend torture test, so this morning I assembled it to make sure that all systems check out... It's stupid killer. Now it comes apart again, and apprentice Glenn gets to do his thang and pretty up the repaired areas. Helluva guitar to have as your first vintage repair, eh?
bubs_42 Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Sometimes this shit is hard to believe ! It looks great...
Caddie Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Oh get over your bad self. That was too easy for you. You had all the orig hardware & electronics. Do something that's tough.....like sinking a 24 footer to win the Bay Hill Invit (aka Arnie Party) gp.....the TW of guitar reconstructive surgery. noonan - mixing golf & guitars every chance I get. ps - sorry, if you're not a golf-a-holic this post might slide on by ya. Its OK, the demographic for co-marketing golf & guitars is a very small pool.
ET_KenW Posted March 17, 2008 Posted March 17, 2008 Did that thing have a previous headstock repair, or was that crack down the center caused at the same time as the rest of the damage? As usual Greg, you've made magic out of firewood.
BCR Greg Posted March 17, 2008 Author Posted March 17, 2008 That was a previous, horrible repair. A couple of closeups.... And with my special Uncle Greg's Sooper Dooper Top Secret grain filler brushed on. Grain filler allows a smooth finish on open grained woods like mahogany or ash. Maples, alder and other tight grained woods don't need it. I have already modded the stock pickups by reversing the magnets and leads on the bridge pickup to get a "humbucking" effect when both are on. The tuner holes are filled in with old growth mahogany in anticipation of original tuners being fitted. I plan on using this guitar at our next gig, April 5th.
BCR Greg Posted March 18, 2008 Author Posted March 18, 2008 And the Badass bridge went out with today's trash.
Travis Posted March 18, 2008 Posted March 18, 2008 Very nice work. I'll be interested to hear how it passes the gig test.
