Dumo Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 "Minutemen - Nov 1985 ~ opened for REM ... last show of the "Fables" tour. Possibly D.boon's last live performance ever, but I haven't confirmed. A week and a half later he was dead. The band's Econoline crashed on the way back to CA. I was a HUGE Minutemen fan... Double Nickles on the Dime dominated my 1985 playlist. It's still is one of my "island" albums."I love Mike Watt. Super cool guy. I went to school in Long Beach and saw dozens of Minutemen, fIREHOSE and DOS shows. Double nickels is a classic. Read the 33 1/3rd series book on it if you haven't already?

At one point DiMeola reached over and detuned Steve's guitar in the middle of a blazing run! DeLucia was ridiculous as well, playing those fast runs fingerstyle!

That singer really needs to get his shit together". They really stunk up the joint.

I saw Anton Fier when he was drumming for Bob Mould and also saw Peter Blegvad when he opened for Richard Thompson in London (both many years ago), but that don't count as the Palominos......

Some of the highlights:ARMS benefit at MSG - Clapton - Page - Beck - and a bazillion allstars, Ron Wood was there Ry Cooder... too many to recall, I just remember thinking, several times, it couldn't get any better and someone else would come on stageThe Who and Clash at Shea Stadium. The who several times but never saw Moonie.The Police at Shea in eighty somthing. also 2007 reunion show twiceStray Cats Built for Speed era at the Roseland Ballroom NYC on my 19th birthday. absolutely jam packed and about 130 degrees. For an encore the band played about 3-4 songs and polished off a quart of JD. I tought, 'Yeah, I'll catch him some other time" That changed my outlook, now I go and see evryone I can. I live about 10 minutes from a Casino that always has great free shows, Bonamassa, Derek Trucks, Junior Brown, Ritchie Havens, to name a few. and has an arena that seats about 7,000, I get a lot of cheap or free tix to that. Sometimes I don't want to get off my ass on a Sunday night and go see some amazing talents for free, but I usually push myself and am glad

I really dug Visions of Excess, too. How cool is that! I'd love to hear it! Yep, Visions of Excess and Blast of Silence are just killer albums! Lots of people at the concert were all worked up about whether Michael Stipe or John Lydon would show up and then bitched when they didn't, but the show was terrific. Syd was a little obnoxious...it was a UMass concert and she quipped "Aren't you the cutest bunch of college kids ever! Can I be in your frat?" She might not have noticed, but they don't really attract a frat-boy kind of audience. But her performance was great. She started out dressed up like a librarian with pinned up hair, granny glasses and a sweater, but gradually let her hair down, lost the glasses and was bouncing around in a funky dress. Peter Blegvad was somewhat amazed after the show that we actually knew his music (King Strut is one of my all time favorite albums). And Jack Bruce got annoyed when the band didn't know the chord changes to the Cream song he called out (apparently without rehearsal), afterward commenting that it was an avant-jazz band. They also did some weird Zep covers...really loose and funny. I thought the whole thing was a hoot! A little older...a little more confused. -Jonathan
