If Hamer would build a limited run of 4 digit style Standards

agreed on all differences but most want the headstock and logo placement and would likely not care about the other things many have come to love.

And to think I was going to have them move the logo back to the "regular" position!

When I ordered my Yin & Yang Standards. I made poor Elduave ask Hamer about repositioning the logo no less than 4 times

we've heard countless times that until vintage hamer values exceed what hamer would need to get to do sucha run/reissues, that they wont happen.

Think Gibson and Les Pauls. When the original is worth multiples of a reissue (at least 10 times?), then an almost unlimited number of reissues can be sold. Until that price point is reached, the release of a reissue will only delay attainment of said price point.

Also, it is expensive to build guitars of this quality today, especially a limited run.

With top end Les Pauls listing for 5 figures, it would not be unreasonable for a Hamer to sell in that price range, what with the higher quality and consistency, etc. of the builds.

However, if I were Jol, I would wait until 4 digits increased in price significantly beyond current value. Then a market for a significantly cheaper (albeit expensive) model will have been created. Then a reissue model could be introduced and produced in larger quantities.

I'm not implying I can read anyone's mind or intentions, just looking at the issue from a purely economic view.

Point taken, I thought the same thing about Dr. Z amps. SRZ's are hard to find but when you do find one they are 1,000.00 to 1,600.00 he rereases them for 1800.00

cause most people are only interested in copying their idols and their gear and rick nielsen is the only somewhat big name associated with them?

and Rick Neilsen sends letters to the editor of Vintage Guitar saying that rich doctors and lawyers shouldn't have expensive guitars because they belong in the hands of musicians, essentially alienating many amateur, financially able musicians (non-doctors and lawyers too).

Maybe Rick should find a couple thousand suitable musicians and give his surplus collection away; surely all those guitars don't belong in his closet. What do his letters actually say?

FWIW

can anyone tell me why a 4 digit can't sell for 6 figures?

They are just as well built as a 50's les paul and rarer.

4 digits are as well built and rarer but appeal to a MUCH SMALLER market of potential buyers. Its simple economics.

I would be interested to hear what the HFC thinks Jol's personal Hamer V bass would sell for. I think it would sell in the 8K - 20K range tops. Anyone else care to speculate?

I'd like to see a Checkerboard RI (with Barney Kessel 'bowtie' fretboard inlays) myself. Yeah, I know that RN has the only real one, but still...

Actually, there are three of them. Rick's and two made like his for contests in 1979.

Really? Wow! Do you know who has them?

Yeah, I'd like to know, too (photos please)! So much for the argument that Hamer CAN'T make more of 'em (hey, they made them those extra two for CONTESTS, for Pete's sake). They simply won't. Fender or Gibson probably wouldn't think twice about doing it; then again, that's Fender and Gibson...

I remember reading that--I think the quote was actually in a VG interview with him (I subscribe), but it seems that the comment was good for a few months of rather angry letters to the VG editor (RN didn't write them, other people did)...

I only know how to spell the names of people who can play guitar better than me

I don't care that you misspelled his name, but ooo, you just dropped a few rungs, baby. At this point I must make the obligatory request that you post an original song of yours that is on par with a Rick Neelsin composition.

Haha. Great song writing does not equal great guitar playing.

Not saying it does. I'm sure there are many here who play better than Rick, but it don't meant jack. Give me a great song over a great solo, anytime.

But ... mea culpa for disparging a sacred cow.

You are forgiven.

Don't most people (including rick) spell his last name Nielsen?

Most people misspell his name. I never got that-some are people who are associated with the guy.

And yes, he's written some of the greatest songs ever recorded. He's also a much better guitar player than his live show would have you believe. Unlike the Britneys and other lip-synchers, the more you jump around wildly on stage, the less able you are to play certain passages, etc. Is he the greatest guitarist ever? No, but he's damned good and comes up with incredible parts.

After reading this I am more confused on why anyone who has the impression that a 4 digit is not different other than cosmetics, from the current model would want to pony up the money to get a cosmetic job, limited run or not.

This is like asking a vintage Mustang guy to comment on an SN95 Mustang or the 1978 King Cobra.

If Jol or Hamer ever wanted to bring back an vintage replica - I'm in.

Like Bro' Chris said - If you really want a reproduction four digit instead buy Kilroys, a Zandard, or a reissue Sunburst, don't stand on side lines - buy it. You are more likely to get it, enjoy it and it is worth commenting about rather than wishing that a company that has made the decision to not continue to make XX model.
