Wanted: Hamer Checkerboard Strap

Call me a wannabe, but I ordered a Levy's MP28 this week. It isn't vintage and doesn't say "Hamer," but it's good enough for me.

I've got a few that I ordered back in the '80s as well as some wannabes.

They wouldn't be cheap though if I were to sell 'em. Certainly more than the $10 each they cost back then!

Wow! Very impressive. What do the originals typically bring on the 'Bay? As expected, there were no examples in 'completed listings.'

Edited to add: I'm also pleased to see how close the Levy's looks to the original, though, alas, with no logo.

I have 2/3 of an old Bobby Lee it is missing lil over half the backing. All the clothe checkers and ends are intact but it is for memories. I love the Levys and have a really nice MP-28L with the nice Leather backing. I've looked for a good three years for 2 more. :)

I have bunches of them :)

JJ:

DO you have any in the 80s colors (non-checkerboard)?

Maybe we should ask Hamer to reissue the checkerboard strap....I could see the blog page now- Dave B sitting behind a big weaving loom, etc. It would interrupt regular production so the street price of the strap would be about $250.

I kid. I kid.

I know they did an orange Hamer strap in the mid/late '80s. When they sold out/stopped selling the Checkerboards in '87 or so, that's what they had left.

When two or three original Hamer straps sold within a month or two I sent an e-mail to Frank Rindone with links suggesting that Hamer could likely do well with a reissue strap.

I think that the biggest hurdle is that the original checkerboard material stock is long gone. Not sure who was making them a while back, but they had the same material and BCRGreg ordered a bunch, including some XL ones, which are great. Only difference is that the later ones were better constructed, not having that cardboard-ish backing that separates when the threads break down. They were on black nylon backing with the cloth pattern attached.

All other b/w checkerboard straps I've seen since just look like cheap imitators to me. I should have bought out the rest of the ones that Greg had. :)

I have the orange strap, but never really used it.. it matches my cracked dayglo proto :)

You can tell the ones you gig with. Straplocks and buttons! :)

I have a really old Hamer strap but the cloth pattern is separating from the backing. Can anyone recommend a good fix? Or does someone want to buy it?

If it is a matter of coming apart at the stitches you have no problem. Shoe repair shops have sewing machines that will punch through the vinyl backing with no problem. It may cost you five bucks.
