santellavision Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 So, I'm running through the Denver Craig's List and I see this Peavey amp for $50. Mint condition. So, I pick-up what I thought would be a light, little amp that I could throw in the car and take to band practice. A crappy Peavey Bandit 75. Solid State. 2 channels, 12" Peavey Scorpion speaker. Weighs only about 25lbs. I figured for $50. how can you go wrong (It's actually in dead mint condition too) I thought what the hell, it sounded pretty good at the dudes house. So, I take it to band practice, plug in my 100x more expensive Huber Redwood and everyone's jaws dropped. The crazy little thing sounded freakin' awesome. Nobody could believe it sounded this good, even me. The clean channel is killer. I did some research on Harmony Central and every review raved about the clean channel and its amazing reverb. Bingo, they were right on. The Overdrive channel sounded pretty good too. It has their TransTube analog circuitry which actually sounds OK. But, in a mix, the thing just fit in and kicked butt. Just goes to show you, never diss something till you try it. My little find of the year.
Travis Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I don't know why so many people diss Peavey amps. I think they sound great and they're built like tanks.
BubbaVO Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I don't know why so many people diss Peavey amps. I think they sound great and they're built like tanks.+1Because they are usually your first amp and they are relatively inexpensive. But I miss the Classic 20 I sold.
backinit Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I have heard many positive things about Peavey Bandits. They are cheap so they suck right?I think it might be a general negative perception about solid state amps.
santellavision Posted September 5, 2009 Author Posted September 5, 2009 They definitely have a sound of their own. Not Fender or Marshall that's for sure. Maybe that's why. It's refreshing to hear something a little different. Not the usual classic Fender sound & Marshall grind. The thing takes pedals well too. I run both an OCD and a Timmy to get some of those tones too. I may just run two amps, this clean with its awesome reverb and my Hoagland 18watt for its pure Marshall tone.
Wally Gator Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 My first tube amp was a Bravo 112. Killer tone for 300 bones. I remember mentioning it to a salesman in the '80's and he looked at me like I just said "Ack"!
doody Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 A friend of mine has this exact amp. I thought it dirtied up great and didn't even have to mic it. Loud little bastard.
unfun75 Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 is that even a trans tube series?Looks early-90's to me. That one is super clean!
JohnnyB Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 Man, that amp is CLEAN! And you got a near gift. The going rate for Bandits on my local Craigslist is $100-225. Local $100 example: The Bandits at my local pawnshops are priced $99-199 depending on condition, inclusion of pedal, etc.
santellavision Posted September 5, 2009 Author Posted September 5, 2009 The gain channel has what they call the SuperSatâ„¢ circuit. It was the precursor to the TransTube. (It might well be the same thing with a earlier name.) But, it really works and does a nice job of compression and handling guitar vol changes.
santellavision Posted September 5, 2009 Author Posted September 5, 2009 It didn't come with a channel/reverb footswitch. I'm not sure which one to find. I do have a mono 1/4" one and it does work the channels if you only push it one click in. I bet to find a used one might be more than the whole amp - haha.
Willie G. Moseley Posted September 5, 2009 Posted September 5, 2009 I've owned one for a number of years that's a slightly newer model; it DOES have the TransTube logo and sounds great. Playing bass live instead of guitar, I use a Peavey 100-watt guitar head w/ TransTube. No problems from either amp, ever.
Mindseyes Posted September 6, 2009 Posted September 6, 2009 Way back when i first started to play guitar a friend had a Peavey Bandit, I allways loved the sounds/tones he got out of it.I was going to buy one as my first "real" amp after saving $$ all summer I hit the pawn shops with the intencions of buying one but came across a 2x12 120w Crate with a tube preamp that was a few months old(found the orignal sales slip in the cab) for less than the Bandit. That crate piece of crap fryed on me two months later!!!My buddy still has the same Bandit and still use's it daily without any problems!!!!!
santellavision Posted September 6, 2009 Author Posted September 6, 2009 Jeff, Thanks, I just bid on it!
