Turdus Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Great band... not really understood in my opinion. They're power pop for sure, with several fine Indy albums out as well. Only negative for me is too many softer songs. The harder stuff hits just right. And only recently did I realize that Donnie sounds a heck of a lot like Cliff Johnson (Off Broadway). Must be a Chicago thing. Listen to some OB, then EZN back to back.
svl Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Love "New Thing", great track. That whole disc is pretty stellar, love "In the Groove" a lot as well.Donnie and Cliff share a touch of the ol' Southside accent, which definitely ties 'em together. They're also both pretty nasally, and have that smooth slurring working.Donnie had a little stronger push in the higher registers, and a little more power over all (could be the difference in material that brought that out).
Jeff R Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 HORRIBLY underrated band IMHO. Great songs and hooks. Damn good players.
mc2 Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Great band....classic line-up in this video. Shame they never got as big as they should've. I always wanted that cool Steve Stevens 12-string Bass Chip is playing (despite it ending up with a snapped truss rod.) My favorite Enuff Znuff story was them on the old Howard Stern radio show in the 80s, telling the world how one of them picked up struggling Madonna in her early days and took her home for some golden shower action. Hmmmm....maybe famous Madge made a few phone calls after that and that's why they had so much trouble in the industry
MCChris Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Derek Frigo was a regular at the Guitar Center on Clark Street when I worked there from 1991-1993. He was first in line for one of the Music Man Eddie Van Halen models when they first came out, but either his credit card or personal check was declined, so he called his dad (renowned classical violinist Johnny Frigo) to come down and fund the purchase. It was very awkward when he showed up and bitched Derek out in front of the whole store.
tommy p Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Love that band! Other than the first album, "10" is a great one to check out.I think Frigo died, but Jake E. Lee actually played with them or recorded with (or both) recently. They're one of bands I haven't seen yet that I'd really like to.
elduave Posted November 18, 2010 Posted November 18, 2010 Strength is their best IMO. I'm trying to convince my friend Todd to do a gig where we play the album in it's entirety.
chptrk_2007 Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 I love "Enuff Z'nuff"! Great band... Great hooks! Great songs! They have that power pop/melodic rock thing going - with a nice twist of the Beatles thrown in... Catchy stuff! Easy to love - on the first listen! Which showcases good writing! Very much like Cheap Trick and Off Broadway USA... They are how I would imagine an updated version of the Beatles would sound... And I like it!I always thought Donnie Vie and Cliff Johnson sounded very similar... I'm glad others feel the same way - I thought I was the only one... Both reminding me of John Lennon a lot! Whether rockin' or singing slower tunes... If you listen to the album "Animals With Human Intelligence" - Enuff Z'nuff - it really sounds like Cliff is singing the whole record! The original lineup of Enuff Z'nuff was the best... Even though they were never "superstars" - their songs still hold up... And for me, that's what it's all about... The songs... Just like the Beatles...
Disturber Posted November 19, 2010 Posted November 19, 2010 Lol. That was a g.r.e.a.t. video. Taken the piss out off whoever they were, he he.Great song too. I'll check this band out more.
singlehum Posted November 21, 2010 Posted November 21, 2010 Great band. Loved the original line up and the early records. Derek Frigo passed away a few years ago, so there's no hope of a full reunion. Frigo is/was perhaps my favorite player of that genre. In their heyday they had tons of Kramer guitars. I'd love to own one that Frigo owned...
HamStd Posted November 23, 2010 Posted November 23, 2010 Get High On a New Thing.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCiqL5wtNTs Great Band, Great Video and to this day I still feel this is one of those songs that you just start tapping your foot or doing the air drums when the tune comes on. Chip Z'nuff is a great guy to hang with, especially if you like smoking weed..... MC2, you are mistaken on this one, the truss rod on this bass is just fine (you are thinking about the Red SS 12 string bass, but that was fixed courtesy of Kim and and the fine crew at Hamer... Here is the bass from the video, that Chip plastered with stickers. This blue SS 12 string bass was original made for Jon Brant and for those that remember the show "Rock and Roll Evening News" he used it on one or two Cheap Trick songs from "The Doctor" album and that tour. Here is another bass that Chip used on Enuff Z'Nuff's first TV appearance on Letterman. It was originally made for the bassist in Elvis Costello's band, but it wasn't comfortable for him so it was sent back to the factory, done up with the "Enuff Z'Nuff" graphics and delivered to Chip to use for the Letterman performance. Enjoy. Peter
