bobbymack Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Hey all, My band's been hired to play a "New Year's Rockin' Eve" type gig at one of the nicer hotels in town, and I'd like some recommendations for good time / danceable rockin' stuff that's easy to learn as we'll be perhaps slightly out of our element at this gig... We are a 4 piece band (2 guitars, bass, drums) that plays a variety of mainly classic rock stuff (Stones, Tom Petty, Mellencamp, 3 Doors Down, Allmans, Clapton, Dead, Pink Floyd etc), and we already cover a fair number of the predictable dancer requests (Authority Song, Brown Eyed Girl, Good Lovin', Closer To Free, etc etc)... I guess I'm looking for cagey songs with a beat (a few ballads would be cool too) that will keep the dance floor active without getting into the beach music / Mustang Sally area, and that can be picked up within a one practice/week schedule over the next couple of months...the hotel knows us and the type of stuff we play, but I'm feeling the need to ramp up the dance quotient a bit for this one. Help please??? Thanks

billhart22 Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Good Lord! It's starting to sound like the "Holiday Inn"! Put on ruffled tuxes!!LOL! Just kidding! Don't forget a Beach Boys song for the really peppy people! 409 is a real ripper! You can't go wrong with Louie Louie - even the FBI could never figure out the lyrics after a five year investigation (True Story) So you would only have to practice that for 30 minutes to an hour."Wouldn't it be nice" by the Beach Boys"Oh Donna" by Richie Valens.....that's a real grabber onner for a slow dance."The Twist" by Chubbie Checker......the old people like myself could get out there and do kidney damage to themselves."The Locomotion" is a great one....a little Little Eva and Grand Funk combined would be a great touch....throw in some Carole King and you will have a hit!"La Bamba" is an easy one that everybody loves!"Runaway" by Del Shannon (That one is even good for Class Reunions)Maybe a little Dave Clarke Five "Glad All Over""Back in the USSR" - BeatlesAnd finally....Helter Skelter by the Beatles. All in fun,Bill
cmatthes Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 I echo every one of David E's selections, but add:"Just Like Heaven" - the Cure"Pulling Mussels" - Squeeze"Middle of the Road" - Pretenders"Pour Some Sugar" - Def LeppardI personally guarantee that you'll have people dancing to every one of these.Other ones that break out the ugly dance moves without fail and take a few secs to pull together:"Should I Stay Or Should I Go" - The Clash"Sedated" RAMONES"Whip It" - DevoTry a little Elvis (Costello, of course). Good stuff abounds.Toss in some V. Femmes too for a quick sing-along/pick-me-up.Crowds everywhere are pretty predictable!
DavidE Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 "Toss in some V. Femmes too for a quick sing-along/pick-me-up."Oh yeah, definitely Blister in the Sun. And force them down to the ground. There's always "Shout" done Animal House style.
Turdus Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Ahh.. Blister In The Sun.... I think I'd rather be forced to look at Poe's ass, then have to listen to that song.
acb Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 The fine art of selecting live music for the drunk masses. Check out wedding music set lists posted online by other performing bands and aside from wedding tunes you will get a comprehensive list of can't-miss-celebration-tunes ie...Addicted To Love (R. Palmer)Keep On Rockin' Me (S. Miller)Rock Around The Clock (B. Haley)

Caddie Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Please don't throw anything at me for making these suggestions, but they do indeed work. And you can "rock 'em up" and/or "blues 'em up" all you like.Folsom Prison Blues - Johnny CashLittle Sister - Elvis, Dwight YoakumJailhouse Rock - ElvisTakin Care of Business - BTOEven pudgy middle age white guys like me will try to dance to these. Why not, we sing them in the car on the way to work every morning!Noonan
MCChris Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Helter Skelter by the Beatles This is the best suggestion.

edgar_allan_poe Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 +1 on the Goldfinger...we do that version and people love it.Any of the 70's funk songs work wonders. Jungle boogie, Word Up, Brick House, Play that funky music white boy, etc...These along with DavidE's suggestions are all can't miss tunes that drunk people love to dance to. We even did a version of Kung Fu Fighting, which is another "can't miss" at 1:30 am. Hungry like the wolf from Duran DUran is also a very easy song that womed love.
bobbymack Posted September 7, 2005 Author Posted September 7, 2005 Good stuff guys (except for you elduave, you schwanz ), we've already got a few of the suggestions above covered but these are the kind of ideas I'm looking for... Remember, simple is good here too, as rehearsal time will be limited and we likely won't be putting too much of this stuff into regular rotation so we don't want to agonize over any of these tunes...

Yup, gotta do the brick house and funky music. Our band throws out Kung Fu Fighting every couple of weeks or maybe once a month. We do it with 2 chords: D to Em. How easy is that?
MCChris Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Brad Paisley's "Alcohol" is desined to become a classic for this type of situation, plus it's something new and different. Even if people don't know it, they'll be able to sing along by the second chorus. The "helping white people dance" line is brilliant. If I was in any type of cover band where this song would be even remotely similar to the rest of the material, I'd add it to the set list immediately.
KorinaHound Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Gimme Three Steps" Once the booze is flowing you can probably play those without practice!KorinaHound
elduave Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 Good stuff guys (except for you elduave, you schwanz ) Crocodile Rock?
serial Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 "What I Like About You" into "R.O.C.K. in the USA" (thanks DavidE) are the same song. Extend one ad nauseum into the other to keep 'em out there.

Steve Haynie Posted September 7, 2005 Posted September 7, 2005 When we played The Joker by Steve Miller the whole place was dancing and singing along. It is a simple song, but we changed the key so the singer could play and sing a little easier.
