cynic Posted July 11, 2011 Posted July 11, 2011 "there is no movement of the neck in either direction with string tension at this time"Can the movement that caused the original "crack" be rendered insignificant by the passage of time?Have I been wrong to assume any crack in a critical joint needs repair?

bubs_42 Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 IF IT IS CRACKED IT NEEDS REPAIRED PERIOD! This thing has been on Craigslist a few times and I wouldn't give this guy 2 pennies to rub together. With the cracked neck what you put into it you may never get it back out of it. If you want it for a player then go for it. It can be fixed if it is just a crack, I have had a Standard neck reset before no issues. I think 2.5k for a bound and crowned is a pretty fair deal and the repair shouldn't be as noticable as leaving it like it is.Its my 2cents you still have to deal with the seller. I do remeber him asking large money for it and not really taking good photo's of the crack.
cynic Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 IF IT IS CRACKED IT NEEDS REPAIRED PERIOD!Okay, that's the rule of thumb I've always safely followed but I find more reasons daily that suggest I'm an idiot. The shape alone will keep it from ever darkening my doorstep, but his suggesting the crack didn't need any attention got me curious.I did send him a note asking for contact info to the shop that declared it sound. If nothing else we can add it to the "stay away from here" list.

I do remeber him asking large money for it and not really taking good photo's of the crack. He wanted 5g's for it when he first signed up here. Then I pointed out the crack.... Crickets... who know's what may happen. when it comes to this crew on HFC... (and I do love you all) man, we can be ruthless it can be repaired, and maybe an easy one at that... still, not at that coin and today's market. If the seller would just get it repaired, He would make the sale. (i know he is trolling....) You know he is going to chime in....
bubs_42 Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Well we all know we have a good support group here. If it gets brought into the fold i'm sure it will become a cherished piece for the new owner.
rj2858 Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 The possibility always exists that I'm crazy, but doesn't his picture of the "crack" only seem to be a "loosening" of the neck joint? Seems like it would be a really easy fix to me, or am I wrong?I sold #0166 back in 2006 for $2500 with a severely twisted neck, seems like that price may be worth it for this, if my assessment of the "crack" is correct. Thoughts?

I gave my comments on this above but you also have to consider the Vintage. 0166 made yours a 77/78? if thats the case they are alittle more desirable. I this one will sell maybe even for the BIN but who nows. It will probly in up in Canada...

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

The key word there being "2006". The world was at the top of a silly fever back them, and decades will pass untill we feel that way again.
cmatthes Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 Jorge is correct. 2011 is most definitely not 2006!Prices have stabilized considerably since then. Also, #0166 should be a mid-1979 model. They made a lot of Standards that year, relatively speaking, but they're still fairly rare birds. Anything older than that is what I'd consider truly the most desirable of the 4-digits.

murkat Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 It will probly in up in Canada... and get painted black white zulu zebra striped, and Rob will buy it stupid cheap, and restore it to its original glory. Funny how history repeats itself.... here it is~ http://www.hamerfanclub.com/forums/index.p...ic=48899&hl
dgstandard Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 It will probly in up in Canada... Heaven forbid! I am kinda wonderin' about the brass nut of which he speaks. *edit - maybe it is a brass nut...I can't tell. I just can't help but think this one was a victim of a guitar swinging gone bad event. Pure speculation mind you.
cmatthes Posted July 12, 2011 Posted July 12, 2011 It was the '70s...swinging was "in"... I'm pretty sure that if he got it like that over 25 years ago that the original owner had that added. People were all into "brass nuts" and such back then too. I highly doubt that came from the factory like that, but it's certainly possible.

People were all into "brass nuts" and such back then too. I highly doubt that came from the factory like that, but it's certainly possible. I re-acquired a 1980 Sunburst from the guy I sold it to in 2006, about a year ago, and that guitar came from the factory with a brass nut. When I bought the guitar (from the long gone Guitar Center on Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago, if you're from the area), in 1982, it had a couple of small chips on it that I wanted touched up. I walked into the old Arlington Hts. factory, met Jol, and told him what I wanted. He was nice about it, but told me that they didn't do that sort of thing. When I told him that he may change his mind if he saw the guitar, he told me to go get it, and when I walked in with the case and showed him, he told me "I built this guitar, yeah, we'll fix it", (didn't even let me pay him for it - cool). I asked him about the brass nut, and he said that he just put it on because he had it laying around. Some of you may be familiar with the guitar, as I know that the guy I sold it to, and bought it back from, is a memeber here. This is the black "LOOP" graphic Sunburst, that was given away in May of 1980 by WLUP, FM 98, for their Air Guitar contest.
BCR Greg Posted July 14, 2011 Posted July 14, 2011 That crazy Jol and his "we don't do that sort of thing" silliness!
cynic Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 So who shelled out the cash for it?Reserve wasn't met
bubs_42 Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 You're an oracle, Bubs More will come along, this I know.
dgstandard Posted July 15, 2011 Posted July 15, 2011 I wanted a bound & crowned one for a while. Aside from the heel issue, this one looks good to me. The seller seems like a really decent guy. I am fairly confident I am done now. My wife is really confident I am done...
